What Does The New Colts Offense Look Like? (1 Viewer)

Ok, so...

  • Pep Hamilton in for Bruce Arians (we already knew, but bear with me...)
  • Dwayne Allen out
  • Trent Richardson in
The Q's are:

  • How will the WR's be deployed?
  • How will the RB usage be split up?
  • How will Fleener's stats be affected?
  • How will Luck's stats be affected?
Pep's college history suggested something close to a 50/50 run/pass split, with more 2 TE sets, and 2-wide sets being the base offense, with Hilton coming off the pine. Not sure they had the horse to run that way, but now they might.

Now, here's how I *think* it'll shape up...but would love to hear opinions on this.

3-wide base offense, with Wayne moving to slot as his new primary home, though he and Hilton should both be able to play Y and Z, to keep D's guessing. DHB should remain full time X when healthy, I assume. With the more talented Hilton on the field more often, DHB becomes even more useless. I think Hilton easily hits last year's #'s now, and probably exceeds them, but I don't think he has that HUGE potential in this O, just because there are a few other touch hogs here with him. Wayne should push 100 receptions again, and should make the move to slotdom gracefully.

60/40 type TRich/Bradshaw split, with Bradshaw keeping the majority of the 3rd down duties. Remember that there was a minor blowup in the CLE media about how Richardson was having to be eased into 3rd down situations because he wasn't there for a lot of preseason. With Bradshaw being so good in pass protect, I can't imagine them endangering Luck. But I also can't imagine they don't ride the TRich horse on 1st and 2nd, at higher percentages than they had been. I think Bradshaw's excellence as a blocker seriously limits TRich's upside as a pass catcher.

Fleener is going to see more snaps, but I'm not sure his outlook improves that much. With Wayne and Hilton on the field more often, there are more dynamic targets to hit than Fleener. With TRich in town, he ought to become the alpha dog in the red zone.

I think Luck's chances of making a post-season run improved, but I'm not sure his fantasy outlook did. Hard to imagine too many keepers close to the goalline now, so it's easy to imagine his rushing bump all but evaporating as the coaches look to protect the franchise. And a higher percentage of the calls down there should be runs now, so fewer cheap dumpoff TD passes. With more 3-wide, he shouldn't suffer in yardage too much, but I think his overall outlook takes a slight ding.

Thoughts?

My thought is that no matter if richardson is there Im not sure how effective he will be until the Colts get an OL to block for him. THat OL is horrible.

I think the base offense will stay the I formation or 2wr 2 te. They want a power running game, Pagano has been saying since the preseason, Pep has been saying since the preseason. Nothing they have done since has led me to believe anything else. This trade further cements the idea that they want a power running game. This is the Colts of Eric Dickerson's time, not the Manning era Colts.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson told reporters late Wednesday the team acquired Trent Richardson to key its power run game.
The Colts desperately want a power running game under rookie OC Pep Hamilton, similar to his offenses keyed by Toby Gerhart and Stepfan Taylor at Stanford. "We need people who can get us yards, can keep defenses honest," said Grigson. "We’re going to run the football. Trent has proven he can run it." The Colts realize their pass protection is an issue, and Andrew Luck can't continue to absorb hits. Richardson is going to pile up carries as a Colt

Pretty much what the old one looked like.
I think this will prove to be not the case.

They went from a team with depth and versatility at TE to one with depth and versatility at RB, coupled with a scarcity of useful TE's...and a mandate to get their WR3 on the field more. Plus there's a lot of talk about 2 RB sets, using Bradshaw in Kevin Faulk type ways.

I think we're going to see 3-wide a much higher percentage of the time, with 2-wide, 2-back as well, and fewer Stanford-style Big Boy type sets. Lots more running, but using Luck's ability to spread the field to open lanes at the LOS, rather than scheming to win numbers battles at the point of attack.

I'm very excited to see the new look Colts, even though it all means I got TRich 100% wrong for the season. Alas.

Trents blocking > Bradshaws.... All day

I do not think that would be a consensus opinion. PFF rated Bradshaw as the #1 pass blocking back in the NFL for 2012.
As well as in 2011 if I'm not mistaken? Pretty much Bradshaw > Everyone in blocking.... All day
Both are very good blockers. Bradshaw has looked good running the ball but the problem is they can't get give him 25 carries a game and expect him to hold up. Now they have two good RB's who can both block.

Sure, it's not a strike against Richardson. I'm just saying... to state that he's a better blocker than Bradshaw simply isn't true. This was a good move for the Colts, obviously they can't expect Bradshaw to hold up for 16 games getting the ball 20+ times a game. Before Ballard went down this was a 50/50 split between the two at best. Now I think we're looking at something like a 70/30 split in favor of Richardson. Although possibly not this week as Richardson has to learn the playbook.

I expect Bradshaw to get most of the carries this week. As for the rest of the season, I expect about a 60/40 split in favor of Richardson. Since their focus is on the playoffs I imagine they would want to limit both of their carries and Richardson might not get too many games with over 20 carries.

All I can say is the Colts had better pray that Richardson stays healthy all year. I cannot imagine the fallout if he misses any time this year.

They have Bradshaw, the fallout will be if he misses time in the next seasons
