What happened with Kevin Smith today? (1 Viewer)

I was wondering the same thing. I was expecting a huge workload from him today, and he was replaced by Rudi. I don't think Rudi is a terrible back, but I just feel like Smith is more talented and there must be a significant reason for this. Anyone have any info?

Who knows what or why they do anything in Detroit - haven't heard about an injury so I assume it was just the coach changing it up

He's definitely not hurt... in Marinelli's post game press conference, when he went over the injuries for the game, he made no mention of Smith.

I watched the game and he just mysteriously disappeared after his third carry like a Sopranos' whack job.

No mention of any reason by the announcers or anyone else. I post on a Lions fans forum and nobody there knows nothing or aint talkin.

Ummm - Detroit has wheeled in many RB's for tryouts the past few weeks. You only do that if you don't like what you have. I suspect Rudi keeps the job.

I watched a good chunk of the game. While Rudi was picking up good chunks of yards I thought he looked slow, flat footed and almost looked like he was afraid of contact.

Just saw Lomas Brown (Former Lions Pro Bowl OL) he said the reason he think Rudi got more carries today was pass protection issues with Kevin Smith.

Must have been blown pass protection or something...I'm guessing he pissed the coaching staff off.

I think that's exactly what it was. No evidence, but it makes the most sense.

And in those few weeks, they've also had Rudi so do they like him?If you check the blog, there's a recent article under the Lions that states that Rudi Johnson will start to get the heavier workload for the Lions. Although I'm a little surprised at how soon and how much, it should not have been a surprise that Rudi got the majority of carries.

They bench Kevin Smith for pass protection issues, but waited forever to bench Foster and still let Jeff "the turnstile" Backus play, and he can't protect anything.

This organization is nothing but an embarrassment. :pickle:

Tatum Bell kidnapped Kevin Smith on the sidelines.
 I'm just happy b/c someone in my league dropped Rudi on Saturday, and as a Kevin Smith owner, I just had to swoop in and snag him...he's crying in his Cheerios right now.....not that Detroit is great, but best to have both in case 1 emerges as the #1 guy....I would assume that will be Rudi...

Once again let me remind you this is the Lions. The first three weeks they have gone down big early on in the game. I wouldn't get too excited... having a RB duo on a team that is playing from behind all the time is that the greatest situation to have

Someone in my league dropped Rudi too early this weekend. I think I'm going to stay away from the Detroit running game for once though. Rudi has always been solid in pass protection, so I'm not entirely surprised he was largely involved. I thought Kevin Smith looked pretty good though so I'm not sure why they'd completely faze him out. Maybe they are thinking long term and want to ease him into the L.

Most definately that is why he is in there. They can't stop anyone from pummelling them from the 1st snap of the game so they have to have a RB that can pass protect. Even though Colletto would love to run the ball down 21-0, Moronelli is now in 'save my job' mode.

I don't know if it started with a pass protection issue or just riding the hot hand, but Rudi looked very good yesterday. Made a lot of good cuts, broke some tackles, ran with some power. He made the Lions run offense look better than it had all season.

I would bet that he's going get the majority of the carries going forward.

Yep Kevin Smith hurt me yesterday, especially with Ronnie sittin on my bench BLOWIN UP!

Combine that with the fact that I had the Pats D in and, well, you get the picture...

(Rotoworld)

(Kevin Smith was fully healthy in Week 3, but lost most of his carries to Rudi Johnson because Johnson was "feeling it, running and getting it going," according to coach Rod Marinelli.

Analysis: "We kind of went with him," added Marinelli after Sunday's game. "He was running hard." Rudi has apparently been impressive in practice and the coaching staff is beginning to gain more confidence in him. Expect him to steal carries from Smith again in Week 4.
Rudi must be really kicking tail if he's going to steam carries in the bye week as well.
