What would have been the 1-game playoffs been in recent years? Wins in parenthesis. Any team three games back or less also gets mentioned.

2010 AL: Yankees(95) vs Red Sox(89), White Sox 1 back.

2010 NL: Braves(91) vs Padres(90), Cardinals 4 back.

2009 AL: Red Sox(95) vs Rangers(86), Tigers 1 back, Mariners 2 back, Rays 3 back.

2009 NL: Rockies(92) vs Giants(88), Marlins 1 back, Braves 2 back.

2008 AL: Red Sox(95) vs Yankees(89), Twins 1 back, Blue Jays 3 back.

2008 NL: Brewers(90) vs Mets(89)

2007 AL: Yankees(94) vs Tigers OR Mariners(88)

2007 NL: Rockies(89) vs Padres(89), Mets 1 back.

2006 AL: Tigers(95) vs White Sox(90), Angels 1 back, Blue Jays 3 back.

2006 NL: Dodgers(88) vs Phillies(85), Astros 3 back.

2005 AL: Red Sox(95) vs Indians(93)

2005 NL: Astros(89) vs Phillies(88)

2004 AL: Red Sox(98) vs Athletics(91), Rangers 2 back.

2004 NL: Astros(92) vs Giants(91), Cubs 2 back.

2003 AL: Red Sox(95) vs Mariners(93)

2003 NL: Marlins(91) vs Astros(87), Phillies 1 back, Cardinals and Dodgers 2 back, Diamondbacks 3 back.

2002 AL: Angels(99) vs Mariners or Red Sox(93)

2002 NL: Giants(95) vs Dodgers(92)

2001 AL: Athletics(102) vs Twins(85), White Sox 2 back, Red Sox 3 back.

2001 NL: Cardinals(93) vs Giants(90), Cubs 2 back.

2000 AL: Mariners(91) vs Indians(90).

2000 NL: Mets(94) vs Dodgers(86), Reds and Diamondbacks 1 back.

1999 AL: Red Sox(94) vs Athletics(87), Blue Jays 3 back.

1999 NL: Mets(96) vs Reds(96)

Notes:

+ The best team to make it as the second wild card is the 1999 Reds, who had 96 wins. Technically, they got a 1 game playoff in 1999 and lost to the Mets, so you could say they made it anyway. Excluding them, the best team to make it is a tie between the 2003 Mariners and 2005 Indians, both with 93 wins.

+ The worst team to make it is a TIE between the 2001 Twins and 2006 Phillies, both with 85 wins.

+ All teams with at least 90 wins made the playoffs.

+ The worst teams still in the playoff hunt at the end of the season were the 2001 Red Sox and 2006 Astros, both of whom finished 3 games out with records of 82-80.

+ No team with a losing record made the playoffs, but its getting close now.
