What is the best mattress? (1 Viewer)

6 weeks in to our Sleep Innovations 12" Sure Temp memory foam mattress. Got it for $399 through Amazon.

The first few days, it took some getting used to. Now I love it. It seems to sleep warmer, but that honestly could be because (duh) its the warm time of year. Sex is still great.

Thanks NJDawg for your help. http://forumimages.footballguys.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/thumbup1.gif
I bought the 10" queen via Amazon based on the thread. Had it for almost 2 years now. Very good bed. My wife and I both love it.
Exactly the same for me.
Otis, I recommend this. I've told others at work and they've all been happy as well.
Thanks -- funny, I got impatient, and after reading a bunch of reviews just bought two of these Sleep Innovations (a twin for my kid's room, a queen for my parents). I actually got this one with the gel swirl added in, which supposedly will make it sleep a bit cooler.

LINK

I'll report back on these. My parents in particular will be an interesting test case -- they've never slept on a memory foam mattress, and my wife and I have been trying to convert them since we made the switch two years ago. We shall see.
Hey Oat. Do you think the Gel foam makes a difference in heat?I'm torn between the Sleep Innovations 10", 12" or 12" w/gel

Thanks
Have this same question.

I need to get a new mattress this week my back is hurting.
I ordered the 12" gel that day and have been very happy. Sleeping well. Back feels good. Wife likes it.

It is firm, but we both agree we made the right choice.

Any other updates here?

Wife and I liked our PacBamboo but a few years in for some reason at the same time we're starting to have a little back pain. I think it softened up a bit over the years, and now we want something even stiffer. We're going to put the old one in the guest room of our new house and get something new. Any tips on anything you all love? I think I'm going to look at the firmest of the sleep innovations on Amazon, but figured I'd come here first to see if any better ideas...

Rascal, I've had the 2nd one for 6 months now, in the 200 +/-10lb neighborhood, zero complaints. I feel like I melt into the mattress, in a good way, and it is still firm. No sore back/neck ever.

Well, we picked up the Sleep Innovations off Amazon. I only slept on it one night, but it feels squishy and cheap compared to our old PacBamboo. I don't know exactly what it is -- could be it doesn't have that nice expensive feeling topper we had on the BIAB. I'm thinking about passing it on, or putting it in a guest room or something, and ordering up another bed in a box. It will cost more, but I suspect is a much better and more comfortable bed. We'll give it another week or two first. We shall see.

So are you thinking a new BIAB is warranted every few years for those who go the memory foam route? Has the mattress changed over time?

I seem to wake up with a sore back these days with our BIAB. Actually sleep better on the recliner. Could be the dogs laying all around me in bed. Thinking about a Sleep Number.

It's weird because we absolutely LOVED our BIAB Pacbamboo for the first couple years. I've never slept better in my life. In the end there it seemed we both were getting back aches at the same time. Maybe it was just coincidence.

Either way, the Sleep Innovations bed is crap in comparison to our BIAB.

So we moved the old BIAB up to a guest bedroom, and now I'm debating picking up a new BIAB. I'd like the highest end one that have, but Pacbamboo still looks to me to be a great bed. Do others have experiences with any upgrades from that one?

Sleep Number memory foam offerings may be nice, but at around 4 grand, I can't justify it unless it comes with nightly handies from angels.

At the value proposition, I don't mind paying for a new BIAB every 4 years or so if that's what's required.

This Sleep Innovations thing continues to be terrible. There's a big lump in the middle between where I sleep and my wife sleeps. I'm basically just resigned to sleeping in the ditch on my side now, and half the time feeling like I'm going to roll clear off the bed.

Eventually I'll get rid of this thing. In the meantime, I'm really not impressed.

that's too bad, because we really like ours. Sorry to hear that.

My mattress saga has been a giant pain in the ###.

I bought the 14" novaform serafina gel bed. it never opened up to the correct shape, it was too hot for my wife, which was a surprise. And it felt as if I was in the starting gate for the luge when I sat on the edge of the bed. If I didn't pay attention I would slide right off the bed to the floor.

We then bought a pillow top bed from Costco. It sucked. Obvious canyons for both of us developed within 3 months. Took that #### back.

1 week into an ortho, factory direct, pembridge II, firm. So far so good.

I hate that I can't just sleep anywhere, on anything. My wife and daughter have taken to calling me the princess and the pea. :/
still enjoying the ortho direct bed. firm as hell, but i like it

Haven't had this problem with ours. I'd consider complaining to the company - they probably would say that it's not what they expect, and might replace it with one that doesn't do that.

Looking at getting a new mattress. I have read this entire thread. Surprised some of you guys can spend 3-4 grand on a bed. Insane!

Any updates..... Looking at that Casper bed as it has received a lot of good reviews. Seems to be the hot new item on the market.

I haven't read this thread but I just bought a mattress 3 months ago. I spent a ton of time on this site...

http://www.themattressunderground.com/

Great tutorials on buying and then TONS of info in the threads about specific mattresses, manufacturers, and mattress types.

I ended up buying a DreamFoam mattress (also sold as Brooklyn Brothers) off of Amazon. I went and tested the Tempur-Pedics in the store a few different times and picked the one I liked most, the Cloud Supreme. Then I bought the equivalent DreamFoam version for $800 instead of the $2k+ Tempur-Pedic. I've been sleeping on it for 3 months, the first month right on the floor, the last two on a regular bed/boxspring. It's the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. I had nightly shoulder and hip pain for years when sleeping and it's completely gone, although i've also lost 40lbs so that is part of it too. But I started weight loss after buying the bed and the pain went away immediately, as soon as I started sleeping on it. Sleep has been dramatically better for both myself and my wife (who has a much harder time sleeping than me).

Couple things I learned:

* Learn how to find the right mattress fit, that was the best thing I learned initially on that web site. Figuring out what makes a mattress comfortable and how to find the right "fit" made a big difference. I was no longer picking what had the most "specs" for the less price and actually finding a mattress that fit my and my wifes body and sleeping habits.

* Definitely test mattress types. I was convinced after reading that I wanted a Latex mattress. Then I actually laid down on one and realized I hated it. Some people can't handle heat in gels, some people hate sinking feeling of memory foam, etc. Even if you are buying online, definitely go to a store and lie on mattress types and pay attention to the material types, density, and thicknesses in each layer.

* Apparently materials really matter. There are some cheaper mattresses out there but from what I've read they can start falling apart and sagging because of build quality and bad materials. The DreamFoam materials are supposedly great and they're U.S. made so they don't sit on a container ship for months and months, rolled up in a vacuum packed box which can cause breakdown in foams (serious/long term) and increase the foul smell when you open the mattress up (short term/fades).

* Avoid the big S manufacturers: Sealy, Simmons, Stearns, and Serta. Overpriced to pay for all those salespeople and mattress stores. Any nice big "S" mattress you find you'll be able to find something comparable, cheaper, and probably made better if you do some research on the mattress undergound.

I don't know if my mattress will stand the test of time, we'll have to see in a few years. They have great reviews on amazon (but I barely trust those anymore) and more importantly they get great reviews on mattress underground form people who take this way more serious than I do.

What's really funny is in the last couple months I've had a couple occasions where someone has brought up buying a mattress or asked about our new mattress. I sound like a complete LUNATIC talking about mattresses now. I sound like one of those wacko audiophiles discussing a set of headphones except I'm talking about mattresses. I usually interrupt and say, I'm not really crazy, I just happened to find this website... eyes roll... blah, blah, blah

I can't recommend Dream Foam enough.

Good Luck!

I also looked at Casper which lead to looking at Tuft and Needle and there is another one I didn't read much about, Saatva. After reading about them it looks like their quality was in question a little bit, long term durability. I don't have any specifics but search for them in mattress underground and read about it. Seemed a little more expensive also. That was how I found mattress underground, searching for information on Casper beds.

Read through this thread and mattressunderground site and finally decided on the 5" Tuft and Needle. Got it in yesterday and slept on it last night. I wasn't blown away, but it wasn't terrible. I'm waiting to really pass judgment until at least a week (the recommended air-out and settling time) has gone by.

And FYI, for those considering Tuft and Needle, their customer service is top notch and if you join the mattressunderground forum and make one post there (like "Hi, I'm new here"), you qualify for a small discount from Tuft, and it extends your money-back trial period from 30 to 60 days

The girl and I went and tested out the tempurpedics last night and both agreed that the Cloud Supreme was the right fit for us. I did some reading on mattressunderground and came to the conclusion that I should scrap the idea of buying any of the cheap available options out there. This includes sleep innovations, BIAB, LUCID, Casper, Tuft and Needle, etc. and go with the Dream Foam. So to match our tempurpedic fit, we chose the 12" Ultimate dreams supreme gel memory foam mattress. Thank you for making this choice very painless with your helpful information.

That's exactly the mattress we ended up with, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. It took about a day to fully decompress to the full 12" and there wasn't really a bad smell at all when we got it. It's amazing how small the box it comes in is. I would also recommend a decent, breathable mattress cover, I actually don't remember which one we bought.

It's been a few months for us now and about once a week one of us still mentions in the morning or when laying down at night now much we love our new mattress. I hope it's as durable as the reviews seem to indicate, so far so good.

We purchased the same dreamfoam bed thanks to mattressunderground and seeing it mentioned here. It has been a few nights and loving it so far.

I had mentioned earlier in the thread that we went the sleep number route and folks wanted to know how durable they are. We are three years in (I think) maybe more and two moves. So far, so good. They hold air just fine with no issues. This includes punishment from the kids jumping around on it like possessed demons. We really miss it when we aren't at home.

Good Luck!

Update the thread and let us know how it goes for you after you get it and spend a couple nights on it.
We purchased the same dreamfoam bed thanks to mattressunderground and seeing it mentioned here. It has been a few nights and loving it so far.
My wife generally believes memory foam/latex beds are too hard and too hot. How does the Dreamfoam rate in those two categories in your opinion?

We have only been on it for a few nights but we like the firmness level of the supreme. After a minute or 2 it doesn't feel too firm to me. They also sell different models, some are less firm. You can go to a mattress store and try the tempurpedic models they are patterned after. I'm in New England so the heat issue is no issue right now. I have that concern come July but we'll see what happens when we get there.

Love my Sealy King... 15-16 years old and still the most comfortable bed I've slept on. Firm, zero sag (flip regularly). GF and I both love coming home to our bed after travelling, and we're hotel snobs staying in places with nice beds.

We're about 17 years into ours. I did have to repair a valve (tore it when we moved), but that took about 10 minutes and a tube of silicon sealer.

Heck...now I think they have versions that will tell you that. They've added a lot of technology to their product since we bought ours and it wasn't that long ago.

On that note, this is for anyone in the thread that is hot by nature. They have a mattress pad/cover that is freakin' awesome. I have no idea how it works but it actually keeps you from getting hot while sleeping. They will fit any bed. It's about $75 I think for a King and worth every penny.

We actually got the sleepiq and its pretty cool. Gives you a breakdown of how you slept throughout the night and a score you can use to determine whether to change or not.

I may have to look into the mattress pad though.

Looks like the one we got might have been replaced with a more expensive version Link

Can't find the one we got.

We got a p5 sleep number. Its been OK so far. Initial thoughts for me at least is 50 seems to hard to fall asleep on and 45 is to soft in the morning like your sunk in an air mattress. Thus model has 2 inches of foam on top of the air mattress. Does anyone have a model with more foam? Does that help with the comfort level?

I don't see what we have on their site any more. I guess we got lucky. Looks like they replaced it with this in their product line. It's more expensive than what we got and I don't know how well it works.

Looking into getting a foam mattress. What thickness do you guys recommend? I like my mattress firm. 150#.

How did you find this? Did you just search through your old posts? Just curious...

Anyways, I'm sleeping on an air mattress bc my tempurpedic cloud is too soft. I was waking up so stiff every day, I have no choice the last week. The bed is very comfortable, just too soft for my spine - Sucks bc it is only a year old.

Anyways, looking for a new bed... Medium firmness - looking into a Sleep Number but reading mixed reviews, anyone own one? Other medium firm beds anyone would recommend?

On another note, is there any chance of selling a one year old tempurpedic? They also have a long warranty, any chance I can just slip the bed inspector some money to get a credit on the bed?

Well I know what we'll be buying next. this sounds awesome.

My BIAB from a few years ago is still doing great. As you note above, wife and I still regularly comment on how comfortable it is. I can't say the same for the sleep innovations we bought a couple years after that. Oof. Hated it.

I'll sell you a Tempurpedic Cloud Luxury Breeze for $2k. It's less than a year old, had a mattress cover since day one, purchased from Sleepy's for over $6k (I have the receipt). You still can't buy it for less than $6k from the store.

I find searching for FBG threads via google is the best. That is how I found this thread.

EDIT TO ADD: see thread above this one. lol

Ordered a new bed yesterday (finally upgrading from queen to king) so now shopping for a new mattress...

Obviously this thread is dominated by those of you who are into memory foam but I don't see it happening for us as my wife isn't a fan. We're going to a place tonight to lay on a bunch but barring a miracle we'll be going the non-foam route. Not looking for a specific recommendation but are there deals to be had online for these types of beds? Or are all the savings generally coming from being able to stuff these foam mattresses into boxes and shipping them all over?

We just upgrade to a king yesterday as well. Also, ordered this mattress.
Is there a comparable model that you tried out in a store that resulted in you pulling the trigger on this, or did you order based on online research/reviews and are hoping for good luck once you get it?
