Or are all the savings generally coming from being able to stuff these foam mattresses into boxes and shipping them all over?

We just sold our memory foam and got a Kirkland spring one from Costco. So far it's great. And with the great return policy at Costco there us no worries if it does go bad.

I was looking at hotel mattresses, but the guys on mattress underground unanimously say that they're awful and do not hold up well.

we were at some nice hotel and loved the mattress topper they used- bought the exact same one... stopped using it after a year or so- did not hold up well.

speaking of mattress toppers (or whatever they're called)... we're thinking about a memory foam version- thoughts?

 
The mattress industry is a big scam. All the private lines & such make it hard to do a valid comparison. The pillow top craze effectively cut mattress life in half. And the prices keep going up.

 
speaking of mattress life- how long are you guys keeping your mattress before replacing?

I've had mine a long time.

I've been sleeping on a Leesa mattress for about a week now and really like it. It is a foam mattress with a latex-style top (some proprietary blend they use). It is medium firm and I've been sleeping like a champ. My wife liked it at first but now isn't sure...though much of what I've read said you need to give a new mattress about 30-40 days before you really decide. This has a 100 day guarantee so if we don't like it we can move on to Casper or Tuft and Needle or one of the others.

Make sure you get a proper platform if you get a foam mattress as well as a breathable mattress cover. If you want I can put links up for the ones we got which were convenient and cost effective (through Amazon).

 
Our mattress HAS to be 20 yrs old... Doesn't bother me at all but the wife has some back issues so we will be getting a new one sometime in the next few years. We got a new one last year, returned it after a week for a different one, that lasted a few days. Went back to the old one. At least its got custom formed ruts in it :D

Is there a comparable model that you tried out in a store that resulted in you pulling the trigger on this, or did you order based on online research/reviews and are hoping for good luck once you get it?

The latter. I spent a little bit of time on the mattress underground. Reading their reports and recommendations. This was mentioned as a recommendation. Also, the price IMO made it worth the risk. King mattresses are just expensive anyways and to get in for $800 seemed worth it.

Yeah I read through a bit of that site on the recommendation of those here (the overviews and a few forum posts) and definitely feel more educated.

My wife is very cool with outside the box type stuff in general, so I can't complain, but ordering a bed like that online is just a bit out there for her. And I get that. If we found a model in a store that we really liked, and found a comparable one on a website, that would be different. I'm not so much thinking about problems from ordering a bed and not liking it after a month, and paying $100 or even nothing to return it. But I'm being realistic here, and I know if 6 months or even 2 years from now we're not liking it (or, ahem, she's not liking it - and let's face it, the "buy in" on this is already difficult), the amount of #### I'll be getting for this will be unreal.

 
Better half and I have had the same mattress for 12ish years. Went to try a bunch of beds yesterday. We decided how much we liked each mattress before looking at the price. Turns out, our favorite mattress was also one of the most expensive. Am I completely insane for even considering that? My brain says mattresses are a huge ripoff but the cheaper ones simply weren't as comfortable.

We just bought a Casper Queen for $800 shipped, with a 30 day full money back guarantee if we don't like it. I have no idea how it feels/sleeps, and my wife is REALLY picky about her mattress (never ending back/hip/shoulder issues), so I give it about a 10% chance that it stays. I'll try to report when we get it set up.

There is a mattress company in Charlotte (Original Mattress Company) that makes all their mattresses here. They have decent prices and on our king, it has the pillow top on both sides. Had it 9 years now and I'd think about getting a new one soon, but it is still fine. I've made my own ruts and probably don't turn it enough, gotta put that on the to do list this weekend.

The one thing I will recommend is the memory foam toppers from Costco. Two of my sons have Original Mattresses (smaller/cheaper so pillow top on one side - not big enough to make ruts (but I should turn theirs as well. The middle guy had the oldest's old mattress, so we got him a topper and for my bad right shoulder it is really nice. I could probably use a memory foam mattress for myself. It allows me to sink in a bit more without compressing my shoulder as much. Always been a side sleeper and after all the baseball, softball and coaching, my throwing shoulder is a mess.

From reading MU my primary takeaway is that seemingly any mattress you can buy from anywhere that isn't a mom and pop type place is complete #### quality.

 
21 days into our purchase of a king Temperpedic and wife and I could not be happier. We went from queen to king so that's a big part of our satisfaction, however we both love the feel of the memory foam. Got a great price because the store is no longer carrying this model. Love Me some memory foam.

We paid $2300 for a Cloud Lux Breeze king mattress with two twin Temperpedic box springs and a king frame (no power base). I don't know if that mattress is discontinued by Temperpedic but we bought the last one at that store and the sales rep said they weren't going to stock that model anymore.

Went to try some mattresses last night, and in a stunning upset, my wife liked the latex mattresses the most. They were crazy expensive in store but it opened up the possibility of ordering a Casper type online and giving it a shot.

Bucky, how long is it taking for you to get that mattress you linked?

I'm intrigued by this. I have a bad shoulder as well (also from throwing) and am a side sleeper (bad back). So foam is the way to go in this situation?

Ordered it Sunday. They emailed Monday to ask which level pad I wanted and said it would ship in a few days. Haven't received it yet, but I'm thinking today or tomorrow.

Hated it. Edges were so soft you couldn't sit on the side and it just didn't sleep well. Sent it back to Amazon.

Then I bought this Sleep Master for $284. Unbelievable the difference. This thing is amazing and I highly recommend it. I know it's inexpensive, but wow it doesn't perform like it.

I got a Casper on Tuesday. It's great. The best part is when my wife is getting in/out or tossing/turning, I can't even notice. Love it. Although it keeps reminding me of True Detective every time I see the box in the garage.

So we ended up pulling the trigger on a Casper order today. I was trying to go through ilov80s so he can get credit for the referral, but my wife ended up ordering it even though I told her I'd take care of it.

I went with the $400 memory foam mattress everyone was pimping on here about 5 years ago. It now needs to go. For $400 I got its money worth but was never really in love with it. I am a bigger guy (220lbs), is Casper the way to go? I love sleeping at WEstin hotels mattress but it sounds like hotel ones arent the way to go. Recomendations?

the tl;dr is that all body types are different and so different materials will support you differently (depending on if you need more support at the hips, or shoulders, etc. etc.) The best way to research is go to a local place and lay on different types of mattresses (like an innerspring mattress, a memory foam one, etc.) and see which you seem to prefer. Then you can go back to MU and research that particular type. They also have recommended sources for the different types, so you can figure out where to get them from (either near you in-store, or mail order)

 
Also, it is VERY unlikely that you can just go into a retail store and buy one and get a good deal. You can almost always find the same model or comparable model at a better price at one of their recommended sellers. An exception to that may be the Sleep Number, which are going to be expensive no matter where you get them, but also a good mattress because you can find the perfect support level needed for your body type.

Pain in a specific area means you're not getting the proper support/spinal alignment. Could be from a mattress that's too firm or not firm enough. MU has an article on how to generally check for proper alignment.

I have the queen 10" version of that. I got it because the 10" version had (IIRC) 3" of soft foam and the 12" had only 2" of soft foam. People were complaining about the 12" version being too firm. My wife and I love ours.

 
Mattress Underground is a great resource that has only served to confuse me a whole lot more about what sort of mattress to buy. Dang. But it's certainly worthy of a look.

 
Two nights into our Casper experience and very much enjoying it so far. My back was frequently killing me in the morning with my old mattress, and the last two days have been much much better. Latex foam is definitely better for me than memory foam.

 
Im looking to try a foam bed and want something not too firm because my back really hates it sleeping on a ####ty hard spring bed with a foam topper. What is the latest quality inexpensive brand/model everyone is into?

Go to a mattress store (Sleepys is fine) and try out their expensive latex foam and memory foam varieties (like Tempur-pedic). The latter will likely feel softer for you, but like I said a couple posts up, it was too soft for me. Once you see which is better for you, you can then zero in on the inexpensive version you should go for. That's how I'd play it at least.
