THis is my First Time in FBG and hope that this work out.. Looking for thoughts on Malcolm Kelly now that the Redskins have said that he is the #2 WR.

Looking to add another sleeper to my Roster and I think that he will be a good option are there any other Sleeper that I should look for that may be on the WW.

Please Help.. Thanks

I've always been a fan of his game. He's a big target with natural hands. He doesn't have blazing speed or great explosiveness, but he's a fluid runner with deceptive long speed. There's no reason why he can't be a productive possession WR right away for the Skins. The biggest issue with him is his health. He has had trouble staying healthy thus far in his career.

I like his game but I'm wary of his knees; he's had numerous problems with them over the past couple years, and for a guy who's not a burner in the first place that could cause him to struggle gaining separation. Still, if he is healthy he should be fairly productive since he is a big target with sticky mitts.

Decent reserve pick with limited upside IMO. He's definitely ahead of Devin Thomas. By all accounts, harder worker & far more maturity than Devin.

I'm not sure how he has limited upside? I'm sure we haven't seen his best yet, because he hasn't been healthy for a full season. He's a great redzone target and Campell seemed to be looking at him a lot in the preseason.

Worth a shot if you have the space, IMO

Before the 2008 draft, many thought he was the best wr prospect in that draft. He ended up having a nothing rookie year (as many rookies do), but in his second year, he won the #2 job for his team. There's a lot to like there.

If he can stay healthy, he might be a major sleeper.

1) Washington offense (abysmal at times)2) When was the last time a Wash #2 WR was fantasy relevant? I use that term #2 WR loosely because he's clearly behind Cooley/Moss & competing directly with ARE/Portis for leftovers & it's highly unknown of the rotation between him & D.Thomas.3) Santana Moss (the unquestionable #1 there) has been on/off fantasy relevant. Last year, solid beginning of year/pretty meh thereafter. Year before, guy wasn't a WR3 [PPR]Kelly's not a game breaker/never will be. If he keeps a starting job his whole career, I'd consider it a great success for him.I don't suddenly see Campbell morphing into a Top QB. Or Moss/Cooley going away. A lot of sharing for Kelly in a very small pie. I consider him a WR5 or 6 this year (i.e. 12 team league/ finishing WR49-72)Limited ceiling reserve. No reason to go out of your way to acquire.

When was the last time they had a WR2 who wasn't terrible? Of course none of their WR2s produced. None of them were any good.I agree somewhat with your overall take on the situation, but Cooley and Moss aren't insurmountable road blocks. Many good prospects have overtaken incumbent veterans en route to becoming stars in their own right.

According to a report on Comcast SportsNet, the Redskins will cut WR Malcolm Kelly this year.

Redskins | Report: Kelly could get cut Thu Jun 24, 01:25 PM

According to a report on Comcast SportsNet, the Redskins could cut WR Malcolm Kelly this year. The report states the Redskins will carry six wide receivers on the final 53-man roster with Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Joey Galloway, Bobby Wade, Mike Furrey and Terrence Austin. Kelly, who is entering his third year, is a candidate to get waived since he doesn't play special teams.

Our view: It would be quite interesting if the Redskins kept old guys like Joey Galloway around instead of Malcolm Kelly. We think Kelly's roster spot is fairly safe because of his age and upside.

The original post was made at the beginning of the 2009 season. Much has changed on the redskins offense since then. From most reports it looks like thomas is in front of kelly right now.

The Redskins could cut the next Andre Johnson

Back in March of 2009, Albert Haynesworth was asked to explain why his agent met with Redskins owner Dan Snyder at the NFL Scouting Combine, which appeared to be a crystal clear case of tampering.

The official explanation at the time: Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck and Snyder were discussing wide receiver Malcolm Kelly.

"Chad told me he met with the Redskins at the Combine," Haynesworth said. "But they were talking about Malcolm [Kelly] and how he could become the next Andre Johnson and stuff like that."

Well, the rest of the NFL may get the chance to sign the next Andre Johnson shortly. Ryan O'Halloran of Comcast Sportsnet Washington predicted on Wednesday Kelly won't even make the team because of his injury issues and lack of special teams value.

That information makes it all the more ridiculous the Redskins got off the hook for tampering using the Kelly excuse. It also points out how Washington bungled the second round of that draft.

The team selected Devin Thomas 15 spots ahead of DeSean Jackson, and tight end Fred Davis one spot ahead of Jackson before grabbing Kelly three picks later. (We like Davis plenty, but they still passed on Jackson twice.)

Vinny Cerrato may be gone, but his legacy continues to live on.

With a new quarterback and coach the whole Washington passing game (not to mention offense) is up in the air. I think the answer to the Kelly Question gets answered in the preseason. If he looks healthy and has a connection with McNabb and seems to have a reasonable role in the new offense then he deserves a late-round pick. But I'm going to withhold judgment until I get my eyes on some playin'.

FYI this has all been sparked by Ryan O'Halloran who brought this up about a month ago and got flamed for it. Last year was Malcolm's actual rookie year as the knee issues mentioned about caused him to miss all of his actual rookie year. I've seen Malcolm at training camp numerous times and the guy has the best hands on the team for sure. His weakness is most certainly his route running and Zorn had him running the exact same routes as Santana Moss, which obviously is not going to work. He did have a promising final game of the season with 5 catches for 109 yards. I think training camp will be a very telling sign but I think is foolish to write him off this early after how horribly run the team was the past two years. Shanny has even gone out to say he plans on getting Malcolm much more involved so I really believe O'Halloran's post is all based on speculation but it is certainly something to watch in TC.

:goodposting: not much to add - hard to imagine Kelly gets cut for Bobby Wade, Joey Galloway, or Terrence Austin. Even if he did get cut, I would expect him to get picked up quickly and I wouldnt let him go from deep dynasty rosters.

Just as another FYI, O'Halloran talked about it again yesterday.Video link

If he gets cut it likely means his knees are shot, otherwise they wouldn't cut him when they have a bunch of horrendous vets who could be cut no problem.

How are his knees now?
No setbacks all of last year and no scopes or anything this offseason. He, along with Devin Thomas and Fred Davis, are down with McNabb in Arizona going through "Hell Week".
Where is Cooley? Making pots and other things out of clay?
Donovan McNabb and many of his receivers are in Arizona conducting hell week. Hell, even Colt Brennan's there. Chris Cooley is not. Cooley's explanation is simple."I've been working out -- I worked out with the team all offseason," he told the Mike Wise Show on Tuesday. "You need a couple weeks. I needed three or four weeks to just relax. I'm still working out, I'm doing my own stuff, but it's a long year. We play football all year. I think there's maybe three months out of the year that I'm not doing something with the team at Redskins Park, so it's nice to have a month to relax a little before we get going....Personally, I'm just happy to have a month to kind of chill out before we go to camp."

Indeed, this is why I'm spending this week on my back porch drinking iced coffee and reading old Thomas Boswell chats. You can't go hard all the time. So instead of sweating in Arizona, Cooley is up in the mountains of Wyoming, which I guess is the tight end version of sitting on one's back porch drinking iced coffee and reading Thomas Boswell chats.

Cooley said McNabb merely texted receivers and asked if they wanted to work out with him, and that the quarterback was fine with Cooley's decision not to attend. In other words, there's no particular need to turn Cooley's absence from Hell Week into Haynesworth Part XLVII.
