What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (6 Viewers)

Hey Skylord, do you cellar Barley Wines like Bigfoot, Old Horizontal, etc? If so, are there years you have liked better than others?
For the most part, I think they use the same recipe year in/year out with Barleywines. Trick is to just get some age on them so the flavors round. I think three years is about perfect, but I have a 2000 Old Numbskull to try here soon....perhaps six years is good!
I just bought some Bigfoot today as part of my shopping trip. Just a 6-er. Figured I can put a couple in the wine cellar and see what happens. Putting away a DFH 120, and 4 GI Imperials. Want to see how those do over different times.
Yeah, I have 6 Bigfoots, 2 Old Horizontals, 2 Flying Dog Barley Wines, some Old Stock, etc. Curious to drink them throughout the next couple years.

Geary's Hampshire Special Ale is the brew of the night. I'm liking this one more than most of the stouts I've had lately. But Maine specializes in stouts it seems so that's what I've been drinking lately (had Sebago Lake Trout Stout this afternoon, too).
you ever get to that Cadillac Mountain Stout?
yeah, I have the empty bottle sitting in my room :D I liked it ok. I'm thinking that I'm not a stout guy though. They have a bunch of bombers at the local market here though so I could send some out to you if you want to trade at some pt. I'm still working on developing my taste preferences.

I found that this market also had growlers from the Oak Pond Brewery, another Maine brewing pillar. It appeared to be an excellent deal @ $6 for a half gallon (considering Cadillac Mtn. Stout is $4/bomber) and some of the Oak Pond beers are actually well reviewed.

Are growlers somewhat common?
i'm fairly new at this too.. but i think most of the respectable brewpubs will have growlers.i'll keep you in mind for future trading. are you nase at BA too?
yep, i am nase over there. i've been getting into it with this venom chick over there on the board.

Sweet, for some reason I didn't see it (its because it was at the top :) ). Lets see if Venom replies back

NICE

My Hair of the Dog - Fred of the Wood just arrived!
 I'm drinking a Fred (not of the Wood though) right now. Up here in NYC on vacation and hit a Whole Foods today that had favorable reviews at BA. I only bought a couple of things for now - Fred, Ruination & some Lindeman's Kriek that my wife remembered liking when in Europe once. So, I'll be trying my first lambic soon too. On Monday, I plan to venture down to a better store looking for some Bear Republic, Victory, Southampton, & Middle Ages.

Oh, and I had a Magic Hat #9 at lunch today. Now, that is what I expected ApriHop to taste like, and I don't mean that in a bad way (for either beer). A nice beer for this time of year, I thought.

Hair of the Dog will no longer be distributed in MN. Gotta do a run and get what is left on the shelves.

Just has been talk on the BA boards about which years they have like more on the Bigfoot. I know they don't change it up like the Anchor xmas, but was curious to see if anyone knew of any differences in the vintages.
I could be wrong. It wouldn't surprise me if Stone messed with their recipes. I think they used a different RIS recipe this year than last.

Skylord, also saw today that you had Oaked Yeti and Old Ruffian on your BA wants. Can't you get that stuff by you?
Not anymore. Fro and FatMax were discussing how they aren't distributing here anymore. But I think I have them in my Liquid Solutions order. I think.

BTW I picked up an extra 22oz of something you'll want that I'm sending in the BIF. I'll let you guess what it is once the package arrives.

So I'm confused. nase puts a thread on there asking about these beers and the brewery. In a forum. About beer. In the right geographical section apparently. So far I am crystal clear BTW. nase is asking a question in the right spot, and wants discussion. Got it. WTF is the deal with venom then? He blasts nase for posting a thread about NE beer.....in the NE beer area of the forum.....about beers.....and a brewery.....on a beer site. Seems like he just needs a good beating to get his senses straight again.Explain it to me like I'm Furley. Because I'm lost.

So let's see if I can get this right:big fish, little pond = ####### #######

big fish, big pond = bitter #######

little fish, little pond = Barney Fife (love-able loser?)

little fish, big pond = most of the rest of us

Is that about right?

the way i drink a beer definitely lends itself to being able to spot the flavors should they be there... but it's just not happening. unless it's overwhelming, i don't get 14 flavors in a beer.

and i'm an eater. i love food.. love flavor.. though i have to confess that i tend to call things out differently than my friends (for instance, wine tastes like bread and butter to me). still.. i think 75% of it is BS and 25% is truth.

if i were to review the Rocky's i'd call out the bourbon taste.. the Falls Nut Brown Ale.. well, tastes like mixed nuts and chocolate.

but all this nonsense about "vinegar" and "wood".. come on now.
You mean you can't tell the difference between birch and oak? Jeebus, man, go back to Budweiser!!! ;) I like to finish half the brew, see what flavors I can pick out, then look at some BA reviews if I can't place a flavor. It's a fun way to educate the palate and the buzz is just a bonus. I can nail a number of flavors and a lot of hops, but by no means have a palate like Venom (one seriously great guy, btw - he's into beer like Otis is into women) or some of the other long term BAs. I've been in a long non-reviewing mode - probably should start that up again.

Right now I'm drinking a Dominion Oak Aged Millenium - aroma of toast, tobacco, vanilla, bourbon-like alcohol fumes, toffee, and a earthiness that indicates East Kent Goldings hops. Flavor starts with vanilla and toffee-apple malt, with tea-like flavors that I attribute to Liberty hops (had an astounding all-Liberty cask ale at Cambridge Brewing Co once that had me wanting to abscond with the cask - talked with Will Meyer, the brewer, who explained what flavor notes were due to what components and have never forgotten that flavor) then gets a peppery alcohol flavor going mid-sip, followed by a slightly tongue-numbing sensation (alcohol? phenols?) with bourbon flavor notes and a non-aggresive bitterness (Perle hops), with a long vanilla and apples/apricots finish with slight hints of licorice.

No BS, just the flavors I'm tasting. You may try it and find different flavors. The wonders of beer. :banned:
ooooops

No BS, just the flavors I'm tasting. You may try it and find different flavors. The wonders of beer. :banned:
ooooops
ouchfor the record.. i "know" Venom from another site. he's not half bad. just a little anal.
He likes anal? What sort of "site" do the two of you belong to?
 thought we talked about this via PM already?

the way i drink a beer definitely lends itself to being able to spot the flavors should they be there... but it's just not happening. unless it's overwhelming, i don't get 14 flavors in a beer.

and i'm an eater. i love food.. love flavor.. though i have to confess that i tend to call things out differently than my friends (for instance, wine tastes like bread and butter to me). still.. i think 75% of it is BS and 25% is truth.

if i were to review the Rocky's i'd call out the bourbon taste.. the Falls Nut Brown Ale.. well, tastes like mixed nuts and chocolate.

but all this nonsense about "vinegar" and "wood".. come on now.
I've been in a long non-reviewing mode - probably should start that up again.

saw some Thomas Hardy's Ale in the store tonight. Had never tried it and had read good things about it so I grabbed it up. Didn't noticed the price was $20 for a 4pack of 8.5oz bottles. :o

Not enjoying it. It's almost sickly sweet and the alcohol taste is overpowering. At the price though I am forcing myself to drink it. 2 down, 2 to go. :(

OK, here's a question - I live in the south and we don't have cellars here. What do I do, just leave in the fridge for a few years?I had read (at BA I think) that keeping them in the fridge was not good (something to do with the humidity or something), but nowhere else in my house is going to be 55º or below.

ETA - also, how will the taste change over a period of a few years?

Maybe put them in freezer bags? Not sure.

As for the taste changing, the sweetness and overwhealming maltiness will chill out. The alcohol will not be as aggresive as well. The maltiness will round out, usually do a more caramel and chocolaty flavor. Its generally the sugary sweetness that is over bearing. Some years will do it good.

OK, I haven't seen any reports yet so I'm going in.

Cracking the 06.06.06

Somebody cover me.

My BA reviewI would recommend NOT opening this beer for atleast six months. But....when this beer melds it will be tremendous. Anybody who hasn't got this beer yet should find some. Liquid Solutions just got a large amount so thats an option if they ship to your state.

So whats up with the banana esters? A lot of breweries have been doing this with non traditional type of beers. Is this a new thing? Did they just start mixing this yeast strain? This opens up a lot of doors....

ROGUE CHOCOLATE BELGIAN STOUT with banana esters....Somebody get John Maier on the phone. This should be made *stat*

Trying to get anything done on Liquid Solutions gets nowhere. Tried to put the 06.06.06 in the cart. Nothing happens. Tried to register. I get an error. WTF is up with them? Can't get Stone at Sam's either. So I'm stuck without..... :(
