What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

Is it legal to transport beer that way? I know most companies can't ship beer to TN (where I live) so I wasn't sure if I could carry myself.

Going to NYC in November and would like to be able to bring some back with me.
Yes. As long as it's for personal consumption. :banned:
Driving to Chicago with your truck seems to make it a lot easier ;) I wonder how much I will end up bringing back.
I'd say at a minimum probably enough Abt 12 to bathe in. Easily. Book it.You reading this, Furley?
I can get Abt 12 here in MN though. More likely to pick up a lot of Two Brothers Cane and Ebel.
Um...."schtick"? Jeez, the ONE GUY I figured I wouldn't have to tell THAT too...

Oh there is plenty of other stuff to pick up that will piss off furley as well. Hell, when I stop at the Three Floyds brewery, I will be able to have Ruination as well as all the Three Floyds stuff. Limited beer is what he gets for living in a town where the tallest building is the hotel.

get your facts straight, guy.

I have never made the sacrifice and gone to that town. Why would I want to? Just going by what a friend told me about it. Sounds like quite the thriving metropolis.

you've never even gone to a Packers/Vikings game?!??!

there isn't a whole lot here. pretty ####### depressing actually. no night life to speak of.. no real entertainment.

I have been to a Vikings/Packers game here in MN, but not there. Why would you continue to live in a place you loath?

I'm guessing the same reason he stays at a job he hates. not sure what that reason is though.

well, i moved away for almost 10 years. then met my girl, moved back here to live with her... she just bought a new house.. we're "settling down". so i'm here for a couple more years anyways.i'm slowly turning in to an old man.. i never really liked going out to mix socially all that much and it's cheap as hell here.

long term plans are to get the hll outta here. but we'll see.. i could grow old here, in Peoria, in NYC, in Taiwan, in Angola.. doesn't matter much to me.

I don't go out that much either, but I want the opportunity to be there if I should want to. I do enjoy being in a bigger, but not big city. I can drive an hour and be on a lake by myself. I like to visit Chicago, but have zero interest in living there.

So anyways, back to beer talk. Anything people think I should be on the lookout for in Chicago or want me to pick up for trades? Already on my radar is Two Brothers Cane and Ebel and some Great Lakes stuff.

Don't go to Angola. I suspect the beer selection there would make Green Bay look like the Big City.

i do miss not being able to eat my choice of ethnic foods whenever i want.. and i miss the Oriental theater for indy movies.

those are the only two things i'm lacking right now.

Yup. When the lady x-rayed my first bag, she said "Im going where THIS bag is going", and I said "Yeah, Im taking some beer back with me that I cant get down in Florida"...The other security guard asked what kind of beer so I rattled off a few of the breweries, and he was all  (I dont think he had heard of any of em)....Then the other bags went through and she called the guy over and said "look at this" (the bag with the 22 187ml Eisbocks).....he looked at it, and then she said "Sir, we have a limit on how many bottles you can take....we're gonna have to confiscate some of these beers" (she said it kiddingly), so I said "O RLY? When did that law go into effect?" and she says "Its a new law that goes into effect right now.", and she smiled when she said it...we all laughed as the gf and I grabbed the bags...

The only thing you have to be careful about is the weight of each bag....Northwest has a 40lb limit on each carry-on, and I know one of em was over the limit...at first I had it ALL in one bag but it weighed like 80+lbs so thats when I decided to mail our clothes back so I could split the beer into 4 bags. I didnt want to take the chance on them making me check the bag (it wasnt packed to withstand dropping, kicking and tossing), so I played it safe and it was no problem.

Thus the reason I am driving to Chicago/Indiana. Don't think I could fly with cases of Stone and Two Brothers. ;)

So Wingnut, how was the beercation? Any beers that surprised you as really good/bad? Anything we need to find a way to get?

Just leave 'em with me. I'll send them to your house after you leave. (And where oh where might thee be gettin' Stone around here? Sam's ain't got it. Binny's neither I don't think.)

Stone distributes in IN, I will likely be making a jump of the border. Gotta grab cases of Ruination, Arrogant *******, Vertical Epic...

Nah, I think I will just head home. Forgot to save your address from our trade anyways. I usually keep them for future trades, but forgot to copy it before I cleared my PMs.

Plus, you'll be side-tracked by the visit to my house to unload my portion of the Stone shipment. Don't forget that part...

Wow, forgot that already. Remember, you can't hang out with me. I quoted my own post. Oh well...

I have a 1988 Toyota pickup truck we can drive to the brewery in Munster. Provides plenty of hauling capacity for the Stone and FFFs. If that helps get me back in good graces, that is.

So Wingnut, how was the beercation? Any beers that surprised you as really good/bad? Anything we need to find a way to get?
It was good. I didnt try ALOT of new beers while up there...The Kuhnhenn Creme Brulee Java Stout on tap was really good (had a Kahlua-like taste), as was the Bells Special Double Cream Stout  The Bells Cherry Stout didnt have enough cherry though...It was good but not great. What was cool is almost every store had SOME Bells, and almost all of em had the Oberon (a new favorite of mine). Really good and easy to drink. I must have drank 10 or so while I was there, and on tap its a little better than the bottle.

I had no idea that Bells had so many stouts. One store had Expedition, Special Double Cream Stout, Java Stout, Kalamazoo Stout, Cherry Stout, Oatmeal Stout, and Rye Stout

I Had some Two Hearted, some Founders Centennial IPA (very good), the Raspberry Eisbock is unique and pretty good (Ill be shipping some out next week). Kuhnhenn IPA was really good, and I bought 2 growlers of it and had to give one away to a buddy yesterday cause I didnt have room to bring it back  Id like to see if its as good in the bottle (Its only rated 85 at BA but Id give it a solid 4 across the board). Id also like to try the Creme Brulee in the bottle for comparison. Also, Kuhnhenn makes a really good Hefe.

Dragonmead Nagelweiss on tap was AWESOME (theonly Dragonmead I tried) and I really need to try more of their beers...Saw some of their beers on tap in a few places but didnt see any bottles.

I didnt bring back a big variety but I did get some good stuff...couldnt find any Bells Batch 7000 or Founders Breakfast stout. Im sure if I went down closer to Kalamazoo/Ann Arbor Id probably be able to find more seasonal stuff that couldnt be found in Bay City. Next trip Im setting aside a day to hang out at Bells and get a room for the night in KZoo. I planned on stopping by a beer store near Kuhnhenn, but by the time I was done sampling and talking, it was late and I was pretty buzzed and had to drive an hour and a half to Bay City so I skipped it. Im sure they would have had more of what I wanted.

I brought back:

Bells: Cherry Stout, Special Double Cream Stout, Two Hearted, Oberon

Great Lakes Blackout Stout

Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA and Double Crooked Tree IPA

New Holland Mad Hatter IPA

Arcadia IPA

Founders Centennial IPA

Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock

I had to stop buyting beer though cause I knew I wouldnt have room to bring any more back with me....But I did meet a new trading buddy at Kuhnhenn that will be sending me whatever I need....Hes a regular at Kuhnhenn, so he will have access to whatever they bottle. He hasnt seen any DFH in the Detroit area so I have some trade bait

Sounds like a great time. :banned: Bells makes more stouts than just about anyone. I see them all the time. Of all the good craft breweries, I probably see more Bells and Victory around here than anything.

I love their no-frills packaging. Most of the 6 pack carriers are just plain cardboard with a label stuck to the side. GB putting the money where it counts - in the beer - and not on fancy packaging. Bells is easily a top 3 favorite brewery of mine, and not far behind Stone. I WILL make a pilgramage there next year :banned:

Ill tell ya one thing: I was VERY impressed with Kuhnhenn. Everything I tried was great, and the gf tried a few of their wines (they make wine and mead as well), and she loved what she tried. The peopple were really friendly, the staff was awesome, and the beer was great. The only downer is they were completely out of shirts and wont have any in for 3 weeks

Ill post a copy of their beer/wine/mead menu in a bit. Very cool.

Hows it hangin, GB?
All is well in Northern California. I haven't been around the beer thread much lately as my pants are getting hard to button. I've got to turn it down a notch for a little bit before I turn into Fat *******. Lately, I've been saving the craft brews for the weekends.

any chance you want to send me some of those Kuhnhenn's?

i won't be able to send anything back except my undying gratitude.

I wish I had tried more of em. The only Kuhnhenns I brought back was some Raspberry Eisbock. If you ever see any Kuhnhenn brews, dont hesitate to pick some up. Im gonna get some in a trade once I get back into the groove.

pretty sure they don't leave the Detroit metro area.

hoping that my mom is friendly enough to do some beer shopping for me this summer when she goes to Kalamazoo... we'll see what she can come up with.
