What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

I'm surprised Tip Top didn't like this Breckenridge #471 IPA. I'm digging it.
I thought it was so-so. Liked it but didn't stand out compared to the heavyweights in the category. I had a Hercules Double IPA right after that, and thought it outshone the 471. Even this Maharaja Imperial is more flavorful than the 471. That lack of flavor impact is what I think held back the 471. But I have one more to test that theory on.....

I dig that Hercules. Now I wish I would have bought one a couple days ago when I was at the store.

I have one more left. I think there are more at the Sam's here, at least I hope so.

Interesting. This bottle is jam packed with flavor. No dates on the bottle so I can't check for freshness. I'll throw my Hercules in the fridge for tomorrow to see how it measures up.

My wife and I participate in focus groups from time to time. They called me a couple of nights ago about a beer group and I thought I was in. As it turns out, I didn't qualify because I didn't drink enough of a variety of beer. I tried to calmly explained that their list sucked, but they wouldn't listen.

I've forgotten a lot of them, but I do know that when asked to list my two favorites off the list, they were Sam Adams Boston Lager and Bass. Also, the last question was "If you could travel back in time and have a drink with any historical figure, who would it be and what would you ask them?" My answer was "Winston Churchill, and I'm not sure what I'd ask, but I bet it would kick ### to drink with him."

Hit Trader Joe's for the first time tonight. Good selection.

Duvel, Ommegangs (one of which was $5/bomber; place is cheap), Samuel Smiths to start.

Lots of regionals but few locals: Big on Sea Dog for whatever reason, a couple from each Smuttynose and Magic Hat. A few more I forget.

and then some random incl. Ekstra Baltic Weisse Beer from Lithuania??

Anyway, I mixed a 6 pack of Magic Hats (#9, Fat Angel) and Smuttynose Shoal's Pale Ale.

Right now, I'm enjoying my first saison ever? Smuttynose Farmhouse Ale.
How do you like the Farmhouse? I've got a bottle of that in my fridge.
I don't have any other saisons to compare it to as it's my first one. Definitely a style I will pursue further. Lots of flavor. I'd try to describe it as if I was an aficionado but I'm not quite there yet in terms of experience.

Same here. I had my first saison (Saison DuPont) Saturday night. I really enjoyed it.

Winston Churchill was a good answer, I heard he looked his booze.I would have gone with Oscar Wilde or Hemingway and went on an "official" absinthe binge. I'd let the absinthe kick in before asking any questions, probably come up with something better that way.

Those would have been good ones. It seemed like two independent questions to me. What historical figure would I most like to drink with and what historical figure would I like to ask a question of are completely different. I'd be very curious to ask JC about the whole son of God thing, but I'm guessing he wouldn't be nearly as much fun to get pissed with as Churchill would be.

Okay.  Decision time.  Should I go for the Speedway Stout/Stone RIS competetion, or should I sit back and enjoy a Beerwerks Bourbon Barrel Barleywine?  First one to receive two votes wins.  And hurry, I am thirsty.

Edit to add:  I couldn't wait for a vote.  Speedway has just been opened.
Beerwerks. Damn, too slow.Enjoy the worlds biggest beer.
lolYou want him to try that damn beer as much as I do. BTW, it's Beermann's.
:banned: I had this last night. Wow, great beer. Again, bourbon aged beer is a wonderful thing. The bourbon taste is very prounounced, with vanilla and oak that combines well with tht malt that has a big caramel flavor. I didn't think that I would have the whole liter in one sitting, but the beer was so good that I just kept pouring more into my glass. Thanks FatMax for sending this my way. Now I just wish I had one more on hand.
I've been out of town for the last few days. I like hearing this news. The Beermann's Barleywine is the only real thing that seperates me from other California people when it comes to trading.

Currently drinking a Speakeasy Prohibition Ale. It is a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. It is actually a very good beer with an intersting hop profile for a Pale.

Great beer night for me.

Started with a SNPA on tap.

Ommegang Hennepin

Two Brothers Incinerator Blonde Doppelbock - really tasted like sour apple

2 Stoudts DIPAs

Harpoon IPA

And I was up playing poker despite a ton of bad beats.

Had a couple of wits and a winter ipa, but that doesn't matter.

THE DREADNAUGHT IS HERE!!

Chilling one now. :D
It is everything it's cracked up to be. The only DIPAs that I would rate with it are Pliny the Elder and Goose Island IIPA. Ruination and Hopsickle are close.
I'd put the Elder near it but thats about it. The rest are good but Dreadnaught is something very, very special. I get weak in the knees just thinking about it. Hmm I do have one cold right now too. Maybe I should? I think I'll save it for another day.Tonight I drink Alesmith Speedway stout to reacclimate my mouth to it. Tomorrow I drink the barrel aged version...
Hmmm...maybe I need to cool one of my Dreadnaughts and re-evaluate.

any of y'all ever have a 3F Pride & Joy? I was really surprised by it. It had a very noticeable hop bite but wasn't very bitter. I don't really care for the hops, but I did enjoy it in this beer.

I plan on buying a case of Alpine Pure Hoppiness next time in SD for that soul reason.

This is my wife's favorite FFF. She bought a 6er when we went to the brewery.

 I guess I should probably sample mine sometime soon. I've sent it all over the friggin country, but never had it myself.

Haven't had that one yet. I'll put it on the wants list.

if you enjoy the hops, you may think it's nothing special. For a guy like me, who so far has not liked the hops taste, it was nice. It may be my first step over to the dark :hophead: side.

I've put mine in the fridge. Consumption is eminent (well in the next week or two)

Dude FatMax, your review of Butte Creek Organic Revolution X Imperial IPA is effed up.

"The acidity of the hops resembled that of a car battery."

"Drain pour after the first pint. Seriously."

I guess I'll put that at the back of the beer conga line.

It was nasty. After just one sip, I was ready to chuck it. I tried the rest of the pint, hoping to change my mind. Needless to say, I didn't. I don't know how that beer is getting good reviews. The only Butte Creek beer that I like is their winter seasonal (the name escapes me right now).

Wow, when I studied abroad in London nearly 2 years ago, I remember hitting this pub at the end of a pub crawl one night. It had a fire place in the center and nothing but this one beer I've never heard of before on tap (Samuel Smith's). I just remember thinking that it was quintessential England, not touristy nor hip in the least, just a good ole fashioned English pub. I've thought about this place often over the past couple months now that I've delved quite a bit into BA and now realize how renowned Samuel Smith's is. I was wishing that I could go back but I didn't know the name of it....until tonight.

Thanks to BA.....The Dover Castle

I sort of disliked beer when I was over there and probably missed all of the good bars/pubs and found the touristy ones instead but if you happen to be in the W1 district, it's a good pub to go to. And I can't believe I was able to find the name of this place tonight.

And I also can't believe I spent three months over in beer heaven (Europe) and hadn't even been exposed to good beer yet. What a waste. I can't even express how much regret I feel over that (and not shmoozing with the locals enough either). I am determined to go back someday.

I suppose this means you didn't get laid enough by strange, sexy and intriguing European woman?

I hated the term "acolyte". I think the key is to obviously rate beers but post a lot as well. Posting in the forum is the problem though.I've been cruising the forums at RB a bit and I gotta say....things are a bit lighter, friendlier and more fun over there.

Have you posted in the regional forums at BA? I find them a lot more easygoing than the general forums. I've actually gotten together and drank beer with most of the guys that post in the US-Southwest forum, which is comprised mostly of guys from Texas. 8 - 10 of them were at the Real Ale party last weekend.

For sure. There is no fun to be had in the BA forums. All business.

I agree that they are better, but still not close to as much fun as it is here. :banned:

Has anyone kicked Wilked's ### for starting this thread with Sam Adams Light yet?
Hey, he started a thread that I spend too much time in. Can't rip him for what he started it with.
Nice work being out of the thread for 43 minutes. What did you do for the other 42?

I have. I'm sure they are all nice guys but I've already gotten into it with one of them on the forums. I met a few of them at the barrel aged Speedway stout event at Alesmith and they were all pretty cool. Some of the guys just think they are really important people on the forums and have some wierd complex about it. Homerism runs deep...and blindly...with a lot of the guys in the forums. Say or infer anything bad about BA and pay the price.

That's too bad. The Texas group is pretty damn laid back.

Agreed for the most part, but I still like BA more. I really don't involve myself in the communities at either place, so when it comes to writing (and especially reading) reviews, BA is a lot better. I hate the one line reviews that are the norm at RB.
