What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

Well, being from WI you should know that there are multiple kinds of Doppelbocks. Hell, Capital makes a Blonde Doppelbock and a Dark Doppelbock.
:bye: i'm new to craft beer.drank the Capital Blonde.. that's the one i had to pour. didn't do it for me. not good at all.

haven't had the dark.

just wondering if a "regular" Dopplebock is going to taste like that  . then there's also the Autumnal Fire and the Eisphyre from Capital. haven't had any of them.. are they all going to taste radically different?

so I just shipped out Furley's package and I think the shipping place bent me over and gave it to me.

I was actually going to drop it off by my work at a UPS Store, but since my fridge decided that it didn't want to work anymore this morning :hot: I ended up staying home to wait for a guy to come look at it. Only shipping place close by is a Pak Mail (a "UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet"). According to the UPS website the charge should been around $11. They charged me more than $18. I asked the guy about it and he said it was due to fuel costs. I thought about taking my box and leaving but the next nearest location is 15-20 miles one way so I figured it wasn't worth it and bent over, took it and said "thank you".
"you using the whole fist, doc?"

the BA description makes Doppelbock sound exactly like my kinda beer. but i'm gunshy from the Blonde.
don't be. go find yourself some celebrator and enjoy the malty goodnesswhich blonde did you try? :softball:
Ayinger Celebrator Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel is the beginning and end of the doppelbock discussion.
Fixed. Although if we're limiting the discussion to those beers generally available and imported to the US. then Ayinger is way the hell up there with Spaten Optimator not far behind.

Another beer box from my BOTM club

Smuttynose Summer Weizen

Smuttynose Shaols Pale Ale

Stone Coast 420 IPA

Stone Coast Black Bear Porter

Ive never had anything from either of these breweries, and the reviews aint bad.
The Shoals Pale Ale is a regular visitor to my fridge. More of a hoppy English style than grapefruity California style, and highly drinkable. Haven't tried this year's Smutty Summer; the first year they made it it was outstanding, the second year they changed things and it lost a lot of its character IMO. The 420 is a solid IPA. Haven't had the porter yet. Nice round of brews there.

No doubt. Its alot better than whats been coming lately, although I liked the Millstream John's Generation White Ale that came with last months shipment. Havent tried the others yet (Millstream Colony Oatmeal Stout, Dock Street Philadelphia Amber and Dock Street Bohemian Pilsner)

Almost had the replacement for the busted growler I sent Skylord. Was at Town Hall today picking up growlers for trades and see on the menu board. Honey Oak Aged Wee Heavy. Of course it was an emergency keg since their seasonals were running out and they aren't doing growlers of it.

too many hoops to go through. were i more prepared it'd be a cakewalk.. but i don't have a scale on hand to weigh the packages (overestimate the weight,  you'll pay for it.  underestimate and it raises red flags).

i'm just going to run them over tonite after work.  they ship at 5:30,  i should be there before that.

next time i'll be ready.
Good point on the weight.I have a good digital scale I use for homebrewing selling drugs - goes up to 6.6# - so I could get accurate weights for my packages.
Your honor, I use it to weigh hops. I SWEAR!

re: St Bernardus Abt 12 Special Edition (from Ratebeer's forum)

"This must have just hit the shores. I picked up a bottle today in Orlando. If you can’t find it soon, send some of us down here a beermail, I’m sure we can take care of you.

Cheers,

JON"
I can pretty much always get this. there are two beer shops here in Orlando (Big C and Knightly Spirits) that carry this all the time.
the one it's talking about is a one-time special anniversary edition.
Oooh. Missed that - now I'm going to have to look for it on Friday.
EG - "I got it at Big C's Liquor store in Winter Park, FL for $11.99. It is in the fridge right now and I am going to review it tonight! I can't wait."from a gb.

you anywhere near Winter Park?

know of this Big C's?
I used to live in Winter Park and know where Big C's is - I'm a long way from there now though. However, the place I go to now had one left when I went in on Friday to pick up some Rogues, so I nabbed it. It's waiting for me this weekend. :banned:

Mother effer. That's a first for me. I had those things wrapped tight too. Must have been the long and narrow box I used.Whats up with all the breakages going around? Everything was great and now breakages happening left and right?

I think the one I sent you could have survived a small mortar shell.

Actually, come to think of it...I think I'm getting this shipment mixed up with my last one I sent to Potsie or 3C's. The box I sent was identical in size to most every other box I've sent. OH...I know what it was....and know what it had in common with the package that you sent me Tip Top? It had those big inflated packaging bubble things on the bottom. Those things must shift during packing and leave the bottles exposed on the bottom of the box. Consider this an official warning to all shippers, don't use those.

:wall:

Learning that lesson cost me a Speedway stout.

You can get more Speedway, me... :kicksrock:

Lagunitas Maximus IPA (courtesy of Culdeus). Pours a nice light amber with a fine head and light carbonation. God hop bite without being overwhelming. Holy ####, I think I see Elvis in the lace!

Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale right now. Barleywine smell to it. Caramel and sweet-ish. Lots of malts obviously, as you can smell. Taste is heavy, and finishes like it can use more time. Just like the similar barleywine style, this seems to be a prime candidate for aging.

Got home about 35 minutes ago. Got a quick start to the night. 2 Hop Devils down and working on a Cascazilla. :banned:

ETA: Had a suprise box waiting for me. That made my night. Details might follow. ;)

I have to say that this Curmudgeon is working on me. As this thing has warmed up, it's gotten much better. It now smells like a banana split with caramel and brandy and a touch of whiskey. The matls and caramel flavors have REALLY come out. I probably would have normally just downed it. But I wanted to see what happened as it warmed. I really like this beer more now than I did when I opened it cold. I highly suggest that anyone who can get it give it a try, and remember to let drink it somewhat slowly and let it warm to room temp. That makes a huge difference in the flavors that come out.

ETA:

Duckboy,

I have not yet sent the trade box, as the weather got hot again here. Wanted to but not yet. I am now going to put one of these in the box for you to try. It is indeed worth it.

Going to try a Niewy Ligt Crand Cru. Barleywine style.

I'll be going to a beer dinner on the 31st featuring Hair of the Dog brews paired with courses. Will post the whole menu later, but I suspect that Alan Sprints (owner/brewmaster for HOTD) will be there, since the brewery is literally minutes from the restaurant. If anybody has any questions you'd like me to ask, I'm more than happy to try and monopolize the conversation.

:goodposting: Sounds surprisingly similar to my night, except instead of two Hop Devils had one Middle Ages 10th. Otherwise completely identical, including the surprise package. :pickle: :banned:

One thing I'd like to know is what's the longest he recommends aging his brews - I have older 12 oz. of Adam and Fred that I'm dying to crack open (sadly only one of each). LOVE that brewery. :banned:

This is a great point. I have another 6'er of Fred from the Wood coming (thanks to LS). How long does he think it will take to peak? And let him know that Wood-Fred was outstanding NOW. Curious to see what his thoughts are on its best age.

 Glad y'all liked it - it's definitely become one of my go-to beers. Great malt/hop balance. Told the brewmaster that it was being sent around the country when I picked it up at the brewery and he was pretty stoked. They just won the silver medal at Tap NY in the "best individual beer in the state" competition for their Pale Ale, and I think the Cascazilla blows it away. Check out the list in that link - when I was home last weekend I ran into the owner of Captain Lawrence at the Ithaca brewery. Dude is maybe 28 if that, and was so impressed at the Syracuse beer fest that he had to check them out himself. Can't wait until the Captain brews are available in Albany - supposedly some amazing beer, and they've been open less than a year. Good things happening beer wise up here.
