What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Is there really that much difference between high-end and low-end beer to the noob?
one word: flavorlow-end beers are pretty much all the same. bland. meant to be hammered down until you're blind.

high-end beers vary widely. you can actually taste the beer. you can enjoy it.

Furley, Ill review the Hop Hearty a bit later....for now I have to share my latest score from the beer store run.

Ive never tried any of these. Line em up! <--- pic of my selections

(from left to right in the pic:)

Ceramic bottle of Rogue Imperial IP2A

North Coast Red Seal Ale (per a suggestion in this thread)

Samichlaus (2004 vintage)

Avery Mephistopheles Stout

Dogfish Head Au Courant

Dogfish Head Burton Baton

Dogfish Head Midas Touch

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale

Rogue Mocha Porter

Weihenstephaner Korbinon (double bock)

750ml Dogfish Head Pangaea

And for the finale:

Sweet Nectar!!!!!

Also picked up some DFH60 just because I can.
Sit on the Samuchlaus...2004 is much too ripe.

All the new (to me) DFH beers and the Mephistopheles were found at a new store I found in Brandon, just outside of Tampa.

They didnt have a very big selection, but what they had was pretty good.

Tonight Ill review the Hop Hearty and try the Bitter Woman.

Oh, and Ill be packaging up some DFH in a little bit!

Really? How much longer ya think? A year?
Drink it in 2007 or 2008. Honestly, its really not that great of a beer until the imperfections have mellowed out. It was the highest alcohol beer for a long time. To get to that level many sacrifices in quality had to be made. Nowadays any brewery can break its paultry 14% by using modern techniques, technology and yeast strains.

I've got two 1996's in my wine fridge aging. Probably past their prime but I can't bring myself to drink them just yet.

In the process of getting snowed in.

Currently enjoying a couple Sam Adams Black Lager.... have a few Hefe's in the fridge as well. Then it's into the emergency backup stash of Bud LIghts :bag:

I was ill prepared for this snow-storm :sadbanana:

Hop Hearty IPA by New Glarus (drank last night)

Cant go into too much detail, but what I remember is that is was good and hoppy, without much malt behind it. The hops were right there, but they were kind of mellow or soft. Not the usual crisp hop bite. Quite tasty but I expected more in-your-face hops. When a beer is named Hop Hearty IPA I should probably not expect much malt though.

Overall a pretty good, thirst quenching beer, but felt more like an APA. Id definately drink it again, at 6+% ABV it packs a nice punch and goes down all too easy. I think it lasted all of 10 minutes.

Im getting ready to pop the top on my Bitter Woman IPA.

Im halfway through a Dogfish Head Burton Baton.

Its like 90minute with a shot of bourbon added. Interesting beer, but not something I would want to drink more than one of in a sitting. At 10% its pretty lethal.

When I was visiting the Aurora brewery in Romania 2 years ago, we introduced the concept of "Black and Tan" to the brewmaster... I got an email from him two months later saying that it was a hit at their christmas party. Seems the concept was a radically new one to them.

EDIT: PM me if interested in a picture of said concocction.
A couple of years ago, my local brewpub had a pale bock on tap at St. Paddy's day. I had them drop in some green coloring and top it w/stout for r "Black and Green". Looked WAY cool. Not too many beers you can do this with, as most beers pale enough to take green coloring aren't dense enough to float the stout.

Had a Duvel 750ml eariler. First time I've had one in years. Excellent beer.
I like dark Belgians better than Pales. That said, Duvel aint bad. I had it once a few months ago, and recently had a Unibroue La Fin Du Monde. Kinda reminded me alot of Duvel.

Im tellin ya, Im liking this Bigfoot ale. Im liking it ALOT.

Another excellent seasonal from SN.

I wish I bought more than a single though.

Me too, but I still can't take anything away from this. Rating it in it's style, it is top notch. It seriously reminds me of champagne, but a hell of a lot better.

I'm not a Bass fan. Not sure if it is the beer or my general dislike of English ales.
Honestly this is the first I've had in a while. Was with family today drinkng some local pale ales and this was in the fridge when I got home. It's not bad. This was a day to forget in regards to the FBG weight loss challenge III.

We're on the same page again. Since I've started drinking good beer, I've had a general dislike of English ales. I've revisited Bass a few times recently wen I've been to restauarants that didn't have any other options and been unimpressed. It's not terrible, it's just kinda boring.

I agree with yall on English Ales. QUITE boring. Very dull, IMO.

Just got back from the BA Extreme Beer Fest. I tried/sampled a lot of beers. Here's the list:

Ummm Beer
Did you try the Megahopped Ruination? How about the Avery Mephistopheles Stout (Ive got a bottle of that in the fridge right now)And whats with the new Unibroue...brew?

Thats a long friggin list. How many beers do ya think you tried?

I meant to try the megahopped, in fact that was going to be my first one, but went with HopSuey from Pizza Port instead. And then somehow I never made it back to the megahopped. I did try the Mephistopheles. It has very good flavor, but the alcohol comes through way too much for me. For the VIP ticket, I got 15 beer coupons. 4 oz samples, so it's not like I got hammered (I might have at the pre-party the night before ;) ). Between freebies ("don't worry about a ticket") and the 15 tickets I had, I tried 21 of the beers. I tried most of the beers from Founders and loved them all. Pizza Port lived up to the hype, but I didn't try Le Woody which was a favorite around our table. Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball was very good. Some of the little known brewers, like The Shed and Milly's Tavern didn't get much traffic but had some good offerings. Dogfish table was always crowded (women like Sam), so I didn't even bother going over. Unibrou 15 tasted just like all the other Unibrou's (10 and 11).

Drinking too many samples fouls the tastebuds anyway, so its hard to get a feel for what a beer is like after tasting so many. I havent tried Ruination yet so I would have made sure I tried some Megahopped, but it sounds like you had some quality brews.Didnt Pizza Port buy the old Stone brewery and arent they now bottling? I hope so Ive heard nothing but good things about their beers.

I plan on trying a bunch of Founders and Bell's when Im in Michigan in June.

Lucky you. Hopefully, they'll have some Breakfast Stout or Kentucky Breakfast around then.

Just got back from Seattle visiting inlaws...funny thing was I thought I was going to Portland...suppose I should start listening to the wife more.....

Hit some beer stores up there and it was all stuff I've had, except for a few. Picked up a couple of hard to find DFH's and one that I didn't even know existested: Raison D'Extra 21% vintage. These big DFH's are always an adventure.

Besides that grabbed a few Czech and Belgian brews that I hadn't seen.

Absolutely. The most overated brewery in the world being Youngs. There isn't a good beer among the bunch. There are really only a small handfull of British beers that are drinkable. The Scots got them beat in the beer department.

When I first got into drinking better beers, I looked on BA and saw a few Youngs and Samuel Smiths in the top 100, so I was stoked when my store had some. After I drank a few different ones I kept thinking "These are some of the best beers in the world?" I was hoping there was much better, and fortunately I found that there is.I do like Youngs Oatmeal Stout and Smiths Russian Imperial Stout though.
