What kind of WINE did you drink last night? (2 Viewers)

i went to high times & got a bunch of samples to try. i will report up on each as i drink them.

04 tir na n'og australian grenache, mclaren vale. the 03 got 93 points from the WS. $22

02 bleasdale mulberry cab, australia. $14 i've some of their stuff before & liked it.

05 drylands sb marlborough, NZ. 91 points WS $13

04 possums shiraz, mclaren vale, aus. $14

04 twenty bench cab, napa. made by charles hendricks. $15

04 barbera d'asti, serra boella $15

03 gresbaurhof supitrol cab, by georg mumelter, alto adige, italy. $27 this was pretty darn good. nice solid rich fruits, with some mild but distinct earth tones. it probably needs a little more time in the bottle but a pretty good find. very limited availability according to high times.

05 oxford landing viogner, southern australian. $6

04 vouvray, cuvee tradicional, francois pinon. $16

04 parcel 41, merlot napa. made by charles hendricks. $15

02 cedar knoll, cab napa, made by mia klein & randy dunn. $14 i really liked this wine. great fruit, pretty well balanced, & nice & big for the 14 dollar price. i'll be buying a few more of these.
possums update coming...as wel as parcel 41...a little to drizzunk to comment intelligently. :suds:

Any suggestions on filling it?  It has space for 12 white and 12 red.

TIA.
Or it has space for 24 red.Forgive me for not being a big fan of whites. Maybe one of the fine oeniphiles here can shed some light on this for me.
I'm the same way. The only white wine I've found that I seem to consistently like is Viognier. I'm not a big fan of sweeter wines and the oaky Chards tend to turn me off as well. As I drink mostly CA wines, that's become a problem. I'm aware I should to expand my horizons in both regards (whites and non-CA wines), but it's become much more convenient to just try whites when they're available at a tasting and only buy reds.

There are exceptions (Sullivan Private Reserve Chard is outstanding), but for the most part I'm drinking a red when given the choice.

I had a lovely 1999 Antinori Chianti last night.

Wow!!! Velvet texture. Hints of cherry and red fruit. Well balanced, with a long lingering finish.

Try some NZ sauvignon blanc as I've yet to find one I really don't care for and most have been outstanding. Kim Crawford is a really nice one at around $13 a bottle and others like Brancott Reserve are really nice as well. I've served one of these wines at Thanksgiving the last several years as they go very nicely with the turkey. Lots of citrus and melon notes, crisp, refreshing and about as food friendly a white as you'll find. As for a chard that is good, probably my favorite I remember trying was an Aussie one from Penfolds a few years ago. Don't remember the particular bottling but it ran around $25 a bottle and was incredible. Wasn't oaky or overly buttery, more like a really kicked up fuller-bodied s. blanc. For whites, I've also been fond of some pinot grigios and the U.S. versions sold as pinot gris (some really nice ones from Oregon). Also some from Alsace I believe but they aren't available here so I haven't tried them. Love Alsatian reislings and gewurtztraminers as well. All in all I drink 10 bottles of red to a single white, but these are my go-to whites when entertaining or bringing a couple of bottles to someone's house (typically will bring a red and a white).

Had the new cabernet sauvignon from Whispering Dove last night -

its a 2003 from the Stag's Leap District. VERY nice, more tannin than the previous two vintages and not as up front, but still a very nice Napa cabernet at a reasonable price.

just stashed 3 bottles of 03 icoseles.  got them tonight for 36 bones

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Each? That's a hell of a great price on those.

restaurant cost. snuck a case through on the invoice for $$, can't do it all the time but it's fun when we do. :banned:
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Intresting. I just landed an account with a local beer distributor at work, and was contemplating this very idea today. They carry alot of stuff we don't carry, which means theres lots of stuff they have that I want, but can't slip it past the invoices/paperwork without the main office raising an eyebrow...I was thinking about adding a case here or there "off the record" for cash...Do you have a deal with the delivery guy or the distributor itself?? The way I was thinking was I just tell them I need a case of <whatever> on a seperate invoice, and that I would pay cash for it, since I am the one who enters the actual invoices into the computer to the main office....The distributor's copies of invoices are for their record only, and the only way the main office knows we got a delivery is if I enter it and send it to them...IOW, theyd never know that I received the cash invoice...

I really wanna try it but am a bit leary...think this method will work?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes, it will work fine and is done all the time by restaurant owners or employees or even good customers if they have a good relationship with the owner or manager.

Not to hi-jack here, but this seems the most likely thread to find the guys that would know this type of info.

I was looking at getting the CINC a "Wine of the Month Club" membership for Mothers day. with our three year old, it seemed an appropriate gift.

Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

Most people here will tell you those things are a ripoff, and if you're going to do one that you're better off going to your local wine shop and finding out what they may offer. That way you get to know the owner, he'll get to know your tastes, make recommendations, etc, etc. If you're dead set on doing something like this, I'd recommend starting with a single winery rather than doing something like one of those "California Wine Club" deals that will over-charge you for bad wine.

Of the wineries I've visited in CA, if I were going to join one, I'd do this on the 6 times per year program. You'll get 1-3 bottles every other month, it will be a set cost, it comes at 25% off their regular prices (Which basically pays your shipping costs), and their wines are excellent.

I had a great blend from L'ecole winery last night---their Apogee cab/merlot blend. It's a small winery in Walla Walla, WA that produces a few very good-to-great wines for the price.

I went to college in Walla Walla in the late 80's---unfortunately, I was more into the Coors Light in the Keg 'o Later at that time in my life, although this winery was operational at the time.

Anyway, if you see a L'ecole wine on a menu or in your liquor store, give it a try. Their pure Cab, Perogee and Semillon are also quite good.

I'm having a Snoqualmie Syrah. Not the most expensive wine in the world (I'm a bargain wine drinker), but it tastes pretty good. We also had a Spanish Tempranillo wine at dinner. Also on the inexpensive side, but I really like the taste and value of the cheap Spanish wines.

Edit: Don't tell the beer guys I was in here. TIA

Which Tempranillo?Cost doesn't matter. I really like, a lot, the Casamaro Tinto and it's all of 8$

I stupidly forgot to write it down. But I will take note of the Tinto and look for it the next time I head to the winestore. Not that I'm going there anytime soon or anything. :banned:

Thanx for the heads up. She doesn't live in one of their qualifying states, but I sent them an email to see if there is a work around. May end up going with your first reccomendation though. Thanks!

Okay gang. Last night I had the pleasure of being part of a wine tasting with Bill Easton and Terre Rouge Wines and also his Easton selection. We tasted 11 different wines and these were some incredible wines folks. I was a big fan of the Tête-à-Tête®, Sierra Foothills 02. This is a 50-50 blend of Syrah and Mourvedre. Retailing for about 12-14 a bottle and a very good value so if you can find a bottle of this please try it.

Drank some Crios out of the Mendoza region in Argentina.  It was a Bonnarda and Syrah mix, it tasted great.  Highly recommended.  About $15 a bottle.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Bonarda was actually an Italian grape but they had a phylloxera problem
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Is the Argentinian Bondarda the original ungrafted rootstock?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well...what do you mean by original rootstock? Many times people will say original rootstock when what they want to say is own-root vines or ungrafted and growers even say wine with its own feet. Technically speaking, rootstock only applies to the American or American-hybrid vitis which the European vitis vinifera is grafted on and it is this rootstock which forms the root system. Long ago there was St. George's rootstock and then 30-40 years ago grape growers started using AXR which was a French-American hybrid. Now there many many rootstocks to use.

Had a J&F Lurton Cabernet Sauvignon + Malbec blend last night. Very very nice. Was CDN $50 at the restaurant, so probably a $20 or $25 bottle. Really liking what I have been trying out of Argentina the last few months.

Hell yeahCavas de Chacras Malbec is OUTSTANDING! Run you about 10 a bottle.

We had our wine club last night. Theme was Canadian wines under $30. The results were pretty mixed of the 6 bottles we tried.

The "group" winner was Reif's 2002 Cab Sav.

However, I rated the 1997 Hildebrandt's Merlot (Which is weird..I normally don't enjoy Merlot) as the best. Perhaps my taste's are evolving.

Do other wine drinkers go through this?

I used to love Cab, and now I just find it all the same.

Jazz Fest is over... :pickle: 2250 customers in 2 weeks for a 100 seat (max at once) restaurant & over 150 hours for me.

Now opening Saintsbury Brown Ranch, Caymus Cab, and our last Turley Duarte.

Don't worry Jules. I'm still holding a Dusi & a couple of the old vines for 1 year. Hope you can make it in that time dude.

Business dinner this past weekend where the guy buying hands me the wine list and gives me the honors. Generally, when someone hands you the wine list, you don't go hog wild unless they explicitly say so (he didn't), so I stayed clear of the Lafite Rothschild, the Opus One, the Silver Oak, and the Shafer. So, looking for a few reasonably priced, friendly drinking wines for dinner for 6, this is what we had:

1) Clos du Bois 2003 Chardonnay - Clean tasting, light on the oak, nice finish. Worked wonderfully with out appetizers, and was a big hit.

2) Trinitas 2002 Russian River Valley Petite Sirah - A light red to ease the inexperienced wine drinkers into reds, this was also a very popular choice.

3) St. Supery Elu 2001 - A good bit bolder than the previous two, but still not a massive, heavy Cab. Nice little spice to it, and it finished off our meal excellently.

Overall, probably spent $125-$135 total (25/45/60, I think) for 6 people, which is about as reasonable as possible in most restaurants. Perhaps they were just being noce, but everyone seemed pleased with my suggestions, and the host asked me to email him the wines this morning he enjoyed them so much.

Tastes definitely evolve - that's the beauty of wine. I've found that a lot of "average" Cabs do all taste very similar to one another. However, at hte high end, I can still taste major differences. Currently, my three favorites are Shafer's Hillside select, Sherwin Family Vineyards Estate Cab, and Barnett's Rattlesnake Hill Estate Cab. Three completely different styles, and all exceptionally good wines. The Rattlesnake Hill is my current favorite - just make sure and decant it. It really opens up after half an hour or so in the decanter.

   Preferrably Joan of Arc Spicy Chili. Can't get them here either, and I used to use them to make my chili. Apparently Joan of Arc is a midwest thing.

You'll like this Jules:

I opened one of our 10 remaining bottles of Old Vines Turley last night at the start of the shift. I ended up being a lot busier than expected & had quite a few tables go on the wait list. I chatted it up with them as usual and decided to give most of them small tastes of the Turley while they waited.

Ended up selling 6 of them last night. :lmao: I wasn't trying to be a salesman, but that stuff is so good, that there are now 20+ new onephiles addicted to Turley Zin.

Got to say I didn't really care for the Turley White Coat. F Murry let me have a taste of his & it was a little to appertif"y" for me. It really wasn't a food wine at all.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Once people taste the Turley they fall in love with it.I will be making it down there sometime this year and we will enjoy the Turley. I just have to figure out what I am going to bring.

Check back for dates after May 17th. Tulane graduates this weekend, Jazz Fest just ended = peak $ time for us every year. I'm trying to throw a poker game for FBG's in July...should be cheap then.
