What part of America is the biggest dump? (1 Viewer)

yet people from there think it is the greatest city this country has to offer. Most delusional fanbases in sports as well. It's a really, really strange place. Totally agree.
Most delusional fan base in sports? Houston is one of the most fair weather fan towns in all of sports. Not so much delusional as dispassionate.

The poorest state in the US is Mississippi with a median income of $36k. The median income in PR is $18k.

Many villages in Puerto Rico have one main road with several unmarked, unnamed roads branching off. Houses do not even have an address. People forward their mail to their work address to get it.

Here a picture of a coastal village in PR:

Or just do a google image search for "La Perla", the name of a Shanty Town by San Juan.

I grew up and lived in a suburb on the outskirts of Detroit most of my life. I worked in the hood of Detroit in my 20's & 30's (80's & 90's) and enjoyed hanging out with my co-workers from Detroit and also enjoyed going to the entertainment districts at night but that ship has sailed years ago.

Once my kids graduated high school I pounced on the opportunity to remove ourselves from Detroit (Wayne County suburbs) as the area is going downhill fast.

There is still a group of supporters trying to stage a resurgence and I truly admire that but I just don't see things turning around. Unfortunately the Coleman Young and Kwame Kilpatrick regime were able to play the race card and convince the city of Detroit to believe in them while they stole the entire city and their people blind.

With that said most of the areas outside of Detroit do offer the opportunity for quality living but can the area survive without a thriving major city?

I've only feared for my life in a few places - Newark was one of 'em. What a freakin' dump that place is. Hate to kick Detroit when they're down - but it's warranted. Depressing. I've been to Gary, and it is a pit. I live in California and it ain't all Malibu. Hemet, Palmdale, much of the Inland Empire, Modesto, Stockton, etc are not Newark bad, but Breaking Bad bad....

Totally disagree with the poster who listed TN first.

I have not been to Detroit, but of the places I've seen it's El Paso.
El Paso is great. Aren't you from California? Inland Empire and Stockton-Modesto along with Fresno are way worse.

San Angelo, Lubbock and Midland worse than El Paso.

Being from Detroit I only had one unexpected fearful moment. This came in Miami outside of our hotel within sight of our cruise ship we were boarding the next day.

After spending all day on South Beach we were too wiped out to go out at night and I went out to pick up something to eat. I pulled into a a Subway and went in to order and noticed the entire area kind of barren, just got that bad vibe feeling but thankfully got out of there without any issues.

I'm a pretty big fella and being from Detroit was not concerned at all with the area but did some research after and realized that I was in a much worse area there in Miami than I was currently at working in Detroit

There are a bunch of shantytowns along the Texas/Mexico border that resemble third world countries, known as colonias. I guess they would count too.

Dirty, polluted, hot and ugly.

I don't find the inland empire nearly as bad and Stockon/Fresno aren't great but still well above El Paso.

What exactly do you like about it?

A lot of votes for Detroit, but I think Flint is worse.
Nope, they are the same city in every way. Flint only worse because they don't have sports teams.

Detroit metro is great btw.

WTF are you talking about? Detroit metro has four million people and is the 11th largest metro area in America. Even in a decline it'll still be a top 20 metro area in your lifetime.

Michigan is one of the best states in the union, people forget Detroit is in Michigan. Longest fresh water coastline in the world, trees, lakes, everything. Where did you "remove yourself" to? DO NOT SAY FLORIDA.

Those are just sleepy towns on the south plains. Boring but not awful.

Odessa on the other hand...

People are awesome, and it's interesting since it borders a city with 2.5 million people in Mexico. Low crime, no humidity, and a very low cost of living.

Odessa-Midland is the same place, awful in every way. Texas in general is a terrible state. Hot, no trees and no water except some man-made cess pools they call "lakes." Low taxes, cheap living and nice folk makes Texas. Same with Oklahoma.

??? I only relocated to Livingston County and one of my points was meant to convey that the suburbs need Detroit and Detroit also needs the suburbs to prosper IMO.

Went to a Seattle/Detroit game at Ford Field...the stadium area is awesome, and then you go a few blocks and it's a dump.

South and Eastern Arkansas is pretty horrible, some of the poorest counties in America and then you have Memphis across the Mississippi. At least it's not humid though.

NE NW Arkansas is pretty neat though.

I'd say, in general, the smaller rust belt cities. Some of them have already been mentioned, Gary, Youngstown, some small cities in OH, etc.

East St. Louis has to be in the conversation, no?
Is there anything along the Mississippi that is a desirable location to live? I can't think of one. I think Missouri is a tremendously underrated state, but not the part along the Mississippi. We know Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana are all terrible. Maybe Baton Rouge, can't think of another.

Stealth candidate: Delaware. The whole ####### state (which ain't much, thank God) is a highway shoulder that can't decide if it wants to be a Philly suburb (way to aspire, DE!) or a "resort destination" (because they have a dumpster they call a casino & 2 miles of ocean-front).

I used to work in Gary, IN and it is a dump. I also lived in Jacksonville, FL for 7 years and along the beach where I lived it was awesome but go over the bridge and into Northwest Jacksonville and it reminds me of Gary and Detroit.
Gary, Indiana and Youngstown, Ohio are the 2 biggest ####holes I've ever been to. I havent seen the entire US, but I've seen most places east of the mississippi.
Worst place in the US i've ever been to was Gary, In. What a disaster that was. At least I was able to get some fireworks before going back into Illinois
:goodposting: 4th vote for Gary here. Literally like another planet. Got lost because of some morons I was with about 10 years ago there. Stopped at a gas station to figure #### out. Thankfully there was a cop car sitting in the parking lot who I walked up to. The guy was sleeping! When I knocked on his window to wake him up he freaked out on me for coming up on him like that and told me to ask the gas station. I decided not to because of the 30 people blocking the front door and we left.

Why Lamar, Colorado? They hosted the Babe Ruth World Series a few years ago and I heard it was a nice place. :2cents:

I live on the Mississippi and it's a nice city.

I live in NJ and would give my state a +1 vote, but only for the certain real dump sections like Camden, Trenton, Newark, Atlantic City....well pretty much most areas immediately next to NYC and Philly. Maybe it makes the NY people and Philly people feel like NJ reminds them of home when they come over here?
Camden takes the cake. FBI ranks them first in violent crimes per capita for cities over 50k. Its funny b/c they have a really nice ampitheatre along the water with a great view of phila at night. In order to get to it, you essentially have to drive through the heart of camden. That's quite a site to see.

Only two of the four #### holes in Ohio so far? I'll take care of the others. Toledo and Akron.
I live between Cleveland, Akron, and Toledo. Those cities are vacation destinations for people living in Detroit.
i can't think of one redeeming quality about any of Toledo, Akron, Dayton, and Youngstown.
The Akron airport is awesome because you can park 17 inches from the front door. It felt like a lego village.
i am going to nitpick because it doesn't fit my narrative. That airport is in canton. And you're totally right. Rarely fly out of Cleveland, try to only fly out of there.

yep. Stay in greektown, eat some place like roast, to to the game the next day, maybe hang out at hockey town beforehand, hit the casino afterward, then call it a trip the next morning. That hole and flint really give michigan a bad rap, but as dr d said there are lots of great things about the state. Just not if you're the city type.

Camden NJ is a wasteland. A place, even the toughest of the tough should never dare drive through. Row houses and broken down apartments for miles and miles. Open handed drug trade on almost every block. The last 3 mayors are either in jail or have been jailed for corruption charges.

I can't imagine a worse city.

Good posting.

It's a shame too. There are some very nice areas that are close by (Cherry Hill, Philly, etc.).

Camden, Gary, and Detroit are good answers. Picking one of these is like trying to pick the gnarliest turd out of a collection of Guinness cauliflower power dump session

I went to the aquarium with my wife, son, & niece this summer - really a great aquarium! On the way, we were stopped at a light... A brand new S63 Mercedes pulls up by the curb to our right. When the door opens, the stench of weed comes flying out. The well dressed businessman with pants around his knees, tattoos head to toe, & a bandana hanging from his back pocket walks over to a pay phone. Prob just rather call his accountant to discuss legal matters from a pay phone than his own personal phone.

I stand by my pick of NJ (Camden,Newark Jersey City etc)

Back in early 90's I was driving home to NY from Rockford IL on SB Sunday and somewhere in OH I pulled off the road looking for a hotel to watch the game -about 5PM when a cop pulled up next to me and asked if I had a gun on me and I replied no - he said I should or I should get back on the highway. He gave me an escort back to 80 and I missed the first quarter somewhere east of that town.

To this day I have no idea where in OH I was but I clearly remember that experience.
Every state has areas to avoid, NJ is no different, interesting that you list Jersey City...

Camden, Paterson, & Newark area places to avoid.

I call it a tie between DC and Detroit. Anyone answering AL or MS has obviously never been there. You obviously prefer congested cities over open countryside.
