What song are you listening to right now? (5 Viewers)

I want to increase Josh-Hines-Ward-Alan-Thicke’s contributions to the board, but “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen is sort of like when I throw out my back unloading the dishwasher. Pain and grimacing followed by a generalized loathing of humanity.

Great pipes, though. Wasn’t Eric Carmen in the Raspberries or something like that? They’re very popular over at Steve Hoffman Forums. He passed last year. Shame. RIP.

Enjoy the music!

Yeah, something like that.

And responsible for one of the best Power Pop tunes of all time, "Go All The Way"

Heh. The language I used is because as I’m thinking about “Hungry Eyes,” it’s also dawning on me that I know Carmen in a different context and that I was just reading about him recently. Took me a second to shift and remember (I’m not a huge Raspberries fan—I prefer the punkier side of power pop like The Nerves and bands like that) the who, what, where, and when.

So something like that. :)

The 1975 - I’m In Love With You (2022)

🎶
And yeah, I got it, I found it
I've just gotta keep it
"Don't f**k it, you muppet"
It's not that deep
🎶

Inhaler - My King Will Be Kind (2021)

Dublin band fronted by Eli Hewson, Bono's son.

@zoonation has posted some other tunes by this Irish group, but I didn't see this one among them.

This song is about a teenage crush but Inadvertently/inexplicably became a fan favorite of coping, hope and resilience during the pandemic. 🤔

Great tune. Inhaler are such a good band.

Heh, unfortunately I don't see me being a regular contributor here these days. These boards feel so stale compared to the rest of the internet and it's 100% because we can't discuss, let's say, current events.

I pop by out of habit but there's never anything new here, it's all the same threads on the front page that were started in like 2019 because they're the only ones that haven't been shut down and they're so blasé that people can talk in them without fear of actually talking about anything that matters and thereby getting banned.

I get that JB is extremely privileged and for someone like him it's easy to just say "no politics" like they don't permeate every aspect of existence for a lot of people but it makes this place so detached from reality that it's not worth much of my time anymore, aside from the fact that I've been here 22 years and have a lot of long-standing fantasy leagues here.

I used to think/say I had a lot of internet friends here but Zilla, Tasker, DrD, Unialias etc... all very rarely come here anymore either, the community as I knew it has basically fallen apart, mostly because the moderation has made it impossible to have conversations of any real meaning about what is actually happening these days.

Obviously the fact that I've bothered to type this all out is because I do or did care a lot for what this place was at one time.

But now we just make lists of 31 songs with long names and dumb stuff like that to while the way time. Or more likely we go to Reddit or discord or some other platform where we can talk about real things

Now playing:

Leaders of the Free World - Elbow (2005)

The leaders of the free world
Are just little boys throwing stones
And it's easy to ignore
Till they're knocking on the door of your homes

Indeed. I just found this live cover of a tune by The Jam.

Inhaler - That's Entertainment (Fresh Focus 2020)

3rd base anyone? Pop goes the weasel

"I've got a strong mind it doesn't have to be spoon fed and i can read it doesn't have to be read"

Depeche Mode - Precious (2005)

A great later song of theirs that I somehow missed.

#1 in Italy, Denmark, Spain and Sweden
#2 Canada
#4 UK
#71 US Billboard Hot 100
#1 US Dance Club Songs

Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos - What A Shame (2017)

Rocksteady tune from a collective of Southern California musicians specializing in Jamaica's “Golden Era” sound.

Paul Cauthen, Cocaine Country Dancing

"I said a twist for me baby, hit a rip for me baby, take another shot, get lit for me baby ohh-wee"

Psychedelic country with a disco feel? Yes please.

I had a long response typed out but decided not to post it. Miss you, friend. You have my number, I think. Feel free to contact me whenever should you not be here or not feel like you can post in earnest. Peace.

Drinking in LA - Bran Van 3000

This woke up a memory or 2. I forgot about this song, but remember it well from somewhere in 199?. It's got that "detachable penis" :lmao: sound the 90s put out for awhile.

Might as well add that one since i brought it up.

Jah Wobble’s Invaders of the Heart - Visions of You

The Pistols are on tour as we speak. PiL is touring the U.K. in April and May.

Whoops. Not dead yet. Thought he had passed and was eulogizing the man. Settle down, rock.

Drinking in LA - Bran Van 3000

I am always amused that this song by a Canadian band was #3 in the UK and #9 in Sweden but didn't chart at all in the US (drinking in L.A. obviously didn't have the same exotic appeal to us that it did at the time to the Brits and the Swedes).

Wildflowers & Wine - Marcus King

Also, getting my SRV fix in today (man, he went way to young). I often make the case that Life Without You is his best song (other days I disagree with myself, but not today).

New Volbeat songs released in front of the new album coming in June. The two new songs are awesome if you are into hard rock and sound like earlier Volbeat.

"Found a job" live 1978 - Talking heads

Tina Weymouth is about 5ft nothing, but 10ft tall with a bass in her hands. Would have rather linked from "stop making sense" (the greatest live concert film of all time imo, but this will do).

Backstreet Boys - Don't Disturb This Groove (2005)

Don't laugh. This is really pretty good. This is a cover the Backstreet Boys did of a song by the 80's Synth Pop, Soul group The System

The tune was recorded for the "Never Gone" album which was supposed to be in the #RnB vein, but was switched to Adult Contemporary and Pop Rock, so this song was never released.

Sorry, no Spotify version available.

Girl Named Tom - Dust In The Wind (2021 The Voice Perferformance)

American sibling folk trio covers Kansas.

This has a slight Peter, Paul and Mary vibe to it, although Mary Travers had a different voice than Bekah Liechty (who is more like Julianne Regan of the 80's/90s UK group All About Eve). This reminded me of PP&M's Leaving On A Jet Plane.

Fun Fact: Girl Named Tom won Season 21 of the American talent competition, The Voice.

Starbuck - Moonlight Feels Right (1976)

Yacht or Nyacht?

The term Yacht Rock had not been coined in 1976 and at the time this tune was classified as either Soft Rock or Jazz Pop

Fun Fact: It is the only hit song (#3 US Billboard Hot 100) to have a marimba solo (although you could make a good argument for Brian Jones' heavily featured marimba in The Rolling Stones "Under My Thumb").

The Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone (1983)

This tune, showing a pronounced B52's influence, has two (count em!) xylophone solos. 😮

Good song!

I’m curious about the B52 influence. Not necessarily disagreeing, I’m probably just ignorant about this. Despite seeing them in concert once, I mostly just think of the B52s by some of their most famous songs — Love Shack, Rock Lobster, etc. They seem so different than the Violent Femmes.

Well...I must admit that I've never read that The Violent Femmes said that the B52's were an influence on them or on this tune.

I could be completely wrong. It is just the way this particular song strikes me, as having a B52's vibe.

Daughter introduced me to this band recently. They've been around a while, but I don't get out much.

Peach Pit - Did You Love Somebody

"If you're gonna be dumb you gotta be tough"

Personal theme song and I'll bet I'm not alone

Jesse Welles - Heart Shaped Box (Live Denver 04-04-25)

Neo-Folk artist with one of the best Nirvana covers I've ever heard.

Sorry no Spotify available.

This is pretty good. Great song, great cover.

I'm a Sturgill Simpson fan and really love his cover of "In Bloom", so here it is to piggy back on the Nirvana cover theme.
