What To Do Near Knoxville/Nashville (5 Viewers)

Headed to the University of Tennessee graduation in early December.  We'll have all day Saturday and Sunday free, flying home Monday.  The thought was to drive from home (Baltimore) Thursday am and hang out in Knoxville Thursday evening and Friday.  Saturday am drive to Nashville and hang out there until Monday.  What should we be doing/seeing?  Since we have to start in Knoxville, does Nashville seem like the logical city to visit next?

Nashville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Clingman's Dome.  With a bit of a drive you can hit up Mammoth Caves in Kentucky, which are pretty cool.

Hell no...skip these unless you really love go carts, crappy T-shirts shops, and general tourist trap bull####.  If that's your thing, then this is Mecca.  If you are going to head to this area, spend time instead up in the Smoky Mountain National Park...lots of great hiking and back to nature goodness.

Fall Creek Falls is worth the drive, but it has been so dry here probably not much to see.  Worth it with kids in the summer.

Different strokes.  Also why I mentioned Clingman's Dome and Mammoth.  Both are pretty cool natural areas.

I live near DC and am there a few times a year.  My typical drives South usually end at Richmond, VA or the Outer Banks, NC.  I don't usually venture that far West/South.  I will look into the Smokey Mountains national park.

Draft Agenda:

1.  Like/Post Ratio and Why Its Way More Important Than Total Likes

2.  Why Bored Upgrades Shouldn't Make the Bored Worse

3.  How Many Emails Are Too Many?

4.  Creation of a Political Subforum To Lessen FFA Dochebaggery

What am I missing?

Cade's Cove is by far the coolest place to go to in the Smokey Mountains. That would be at the top of my list.  Leaves are probably all gone by now but I go there every time I'm in the area.  It's about an hour drive but it's an amazing place.  You can just drive through it.

Setting  fire to the Political Subforum once it has been populated.

What kind of boat discount should I expect?  I mean, I'm a long time FBG with history way way back to the original bored.  Plus I'm tight with several FBGs including a certain like/post ratio obsessed Eagles fan with a mediocre vertical leap.  I'm thinking a discount of at least 70% is in order.  @Joe Bryant let's make this happen.

As much as I like Fall Creek Falls (kinda between Knox/Nash), it could be cold and muddy in December.

Not really sure what kinds of things you like to do (outdoors, touristy stuff, etc.) but I'd highly recommend Nashville at least once if you haven't been.  The drive to/from Knoxville is pretty nice, too.

IMO, downtown Nashville always has stuff going on but is even better when the Preds and/or Titans are in town, even if you're not going to the games.  Not sure which "early December" weekend you're looking at but the first one has two Preds games and a Christmas parade, and the second weekend has the Titans first game in a month.  Should be fun crowds both weekends.

Joe - charge him extra for all of the lies he just vomited in this post.

   But if some Black Bears are out and about, the traffic flow comes to a stand still which is nice if you are near the bears, but frustrating otherwise.  Bring a picnic/cooler and a frisbee and hang out at the Cove...watch the deer feed.  Chimney Tops...Le Conte...Appalachian Trail...Clingman's Dome (as previously mentioned)...many good hikes and great views.  Grotto Falls is a nice family friendly hike of only a couple miles with a cool destination at the end.  Of course, being December, it is probably not the best time for a refreshing dip in the water at the falls.

Another cool place you are a little less than 2 hours from is Asheville NC.

I went there in the summer and toured the Biltmore. It was nice. I like that city too.

IF you want to do outdoors type stuff, go to Smoky Mountains.

If you want to do fun downtown scene/city stuff, go to Nashville.

Some people hate Gatlinburg as it's pretty touristy.  But I think it's pretty fun.  There's a TON of stuff to do there.  With kids, you can't go wrong.

Nashville is all about the music.  Embrace it.  Super talented musicians flock there.
I'm here right now. Last night I basically bar hopped for a couple hours after dinner and had a great time hearing a couple songs and moving on. Crazy to me how some of these places will have multiple floors all having different people playing, and also how there will be live music in these places at 11am on a weekday.

Definitely country heavy but heard plenty of covers of other stuff and also caught a band playing basically a 90s alternative rock set.

My fabulous "kids" are 17 and 21.  Here's what I'm thinking so far.  Saturday morning we drive from Noxville to the SM and do the Cade's Cove drive/walk.  We're not really hikers but we're all in good shape, so a decent amount of walking won't be an issue.  After spending the morning/afternoon there we head to Nashville for the evening.  Get into our hotel and check out the bar scene.  Spend Sunday in Nashville and go home Monday.

Sound good?

I'm from the area but I avoid downtown.  Good music but drunks everywhere.  Not a place for kids at night.  12 South area is really nice area to go eat and hang out.

Gatlingburg is ok touristy...Pigeon Forge is a craphole.

True...weekend nights for sure are packed with plenty of idiots

But fun stuff down there.  Know that there isn't really such a thing as drinking cheap in Nashville either.

I was just in Nashville last weekend for a wedding.  I really enjoyed brewery-hopping in the Gulch district, which was a cool walkable part of town with a bunch of breweries and restaurants in one area.  I went to Yazoo, Tennessee Brew Works, and Jackalope.

Downtown Nashville on Broadway is kind of a drunken touristy ####show, but perhaps still worth a walk around just to get the traditional Nashville country music experience.  There are live bands in basically every bar along the strip.

Some of the restaurants that were recommended to me by a Nashville local included Arnold's, Monell's, Husk, Butcher & Bee, and Butchertown Hall -- although I can't personally vouch for any of them.

Was just there last weekend. My daughter lives there and we've been down there a few times. This past weekend we took her Aunt and Uncle and we went to the Opryland Hotel. It's amazing. All decked out for Christmas, inside and out. $24 for parking (You can park for free if you don't mind hoofing it) but it was incredible, got some awesome pictures. Boat rides inside the hotel too.

Opry Mills mall is crazy huge with tons of restaurants. East Nashville is up and coming and has some great bars-restaurants, but beware a lot of them won't let anyone under 21 in, even if it's also a restaurant. They are extremely strict when it comes to that. My daughter had to tell Reba McEntyre she couldn't eat there because she had an underage kid with their party. Take your ID's!!!

Ok, the trip is booked.  Flying into Nashville Friday morning then driving to Knoxville for the last afternoon graduation.  I'll be busy with stupid family stuff so Friday is all taken up, staying in Knoxville Friday night.  Saturday am we'll get up early and head to the Smokey Mountains for some outdoorsy stuff (Clingmans Dome/Cades Cove). In the late afternoon we'll drive to our hotel in downtown Nashville and just grab something to eat late.

We have no plans on Sunday and we're flying home Monday afternoon so we have all day Sunday.  What do we do?  See one of the shows on their broadway?  The Opryland Hotel Pack mentioned?  Help me out here Nashville bros.
