Why wouldn't disease and evolution be choices? They take out more species than all of the other choices combined.

It is clearly the meteorite event...it's happened several times before, and it will happen again.(unless we find a way to change their path, which from a physics perspective is very difficult to do.

I do believe that global warming(man made or not), has the potential to result in massive food shortages, which would result in world wars and significant reduction in population, but not total human extinction. Habitats have always adjusted populations down when necessary.

I'm not exactly sure the cause, but the date will be November 23rd, 2016.
I will put this date in my outlook. Should i block off the entire day or is the an AM or PM type of thing?
I plan on being in bed by midnite and sleeping all day.

Always wanted to die in my sleep.

It will either be climate change or an event like a meteor or supervolcano that speeds up the process. Wars, diseases and natural disasters will knock out huge populations in the meantime, but extinction will only come once the entire planet's atmosphere can't sustain life. Whether that happens from conventional climate change before we run out of fossil fuels is an open question. Surely the climate will change drastically, again killing off large populations, but people will adapt and migrate toward the poles. It will take a death blow like the meteor or volcano that finally gets it to that tipping point.

Our sun isn't large enough to go super nova. It will become a red giant and swallow the earth.

This sounds spot on. I've always guessed a volcano will do it.

Yellowstone Super Volcanic eruption leading to catastrophic climate change resulting in the breakdown of civilized society.

A virus. The earth will get rid of us when it feels it can't sustain with us on the planet.

Simple as that.
Yep. Virus.
Significant culling of the human race? Yes. Outright extinction? I would think the virus would struggle to survive in certain climates. If that failed, I would guess that there would be a select few who would have immunity of some kind.

not just a virus, a man made virus. somebody will try to kill somebody else with it but backfire and kill all of us. makes perfect sense. and if this happens we could see it in our lifetime...

Odds of a supernova are unlikely but in about 5 billion years it will go through its Red Giant phase which has a high likely hood of engulfing the Earth or at least evaportaing all the water.

our sun can't go supernova. impossible.

With the rate at which AI and Robotics continue to advance, it's only a matter of time before one can pass the Turing Test.

At that point, buckle up.

Counting on the bird flu to give us a little taste of post-apocalyptica, but it'll take a meteor or something like that to wipe us all out.

I gotta go with "Survival of the un-fittest".

Any species that finds a way to keep even the weakest of its gene pool alive and reproducing is eventually going to devolve as a species and become extinct.

According to Australian microbiologist Dr Frank Fenner, humans will be extinct in about a century or so and will be wiped off en masse from the face of this earth due to overcrowding, declining resources and climate change.

This guy must be a huge hit at cocktail parties.

If it were a virus, it would have to be man-made. Unlike Hollywood stories, it's virtually impossible for a naturally occurring virus to wipe out humanity. A virus that could do this would almost have to be intelligent in order to accomplish extinction (overcoming quarantines, travelling to remote areas, etc.). Also, viruses need hosts to survive, so killing all its host animals wouldn't be a good way for the virus to survive, and such viruses tend to die out quickly.

If man could create a virus that sterilized humans and was otherwise asymptomatic, that would probably have the best chance of working. Not sure how good our in vitro technology is, but I'm thinking it wouldn't be able to sustain the global population. Even then it would have problems reaching isolate pockets of humanity.

It's got to be something beyond our control...and if it's not a big "boom" from a meteor or something, it's going to be a disease that kills fast and is hard to cure.
Historically the best diseases for killing off populations, don't act fast...that is why ebola is not as effective at killing as it could be. People die so fast they don't have time to spread it.

The greater threats to massive population reduction are those that act slow, but still eventually kill.
Historically, I agree...But historically, we haven't had a disease that truly risked mass extinction. A disease that kills everyone (or almost everyone) would have to have certain characteristics. I guess "kills fast" is the wrong term though. I get your point. It can't kill FAST, or nobody would be able to contract it in time. I think the ideal would be:

  • Easily spread via airborne and/or water transmission (i.e. NOT just STD or direct contact)
  • Nearly 100% fatal - Once you get it, you die.
  • Can't kill you too fast, ideally doesn't present symptoms until it's been in your system and able to be spread for a while...if you kill fast, you kill the host and stop the transmission.
  • Has to get into Madagascar before they close the borders. :bag:
You forgot one.

  • the dead people turn into zombies and kill off the remaining population.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. Basically, it's made up of two separate words — "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

They do have a unique sense of humor down there.
