Do you regularly drink alcohol non-socially?

I'm a simple rum drinker. On the rocks, or a rum & coke, mmmm. I drink 3-4 nights a week, but never more than 2 drinks because any more than that and I sleep like crap and feel terrible the next day. I will do the occasional margarita with dinner at our fav Mexican restaurant, but otherwise 100% of my drinking time is done alone, at night after the kid goes to bed, unwinding/watching a game/etc.

love Plantation XO

Switch to scotch. You'll feel better the next morning imo.

I answered yes, since I usually have a few drinks on Tuesdays after my work emails die down. Now, I'm usually "socializing" by texting friends and doing Facebook stuff, but I guess that doesn't really count for this pole.

Yes, more wine then beer these days. But am good for 1-2 glasses a few nights a week, maybe a little more occasionally. I can't remember the last time I feel like I went overboard on alcohol.

I do like some chocolate mushrooms though

Can't remember when I've had a beer. Here are some pointers that have helped some of my buddies get healthier / lose fat / lowered their booze intake. Ignore if not applicable but if this helps anyone that's great!
1. Skip drinking beer. It's liquid bread. Even low calorie you end up just drinking more and more often. If you are going to drink booze at least do it right. Think of sweets
Trying to cut down my drinking with each passing day. The craft beer scene in Portland is just bonkers and that's what I love. Especially now in Fresh Hop Season. I will definitely have 4 - 6 cans over the course of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Typically don't drink at all Sunday through Wednesday.
how much weight have you gained? That's like drinking liquid bread. If you must drink highly recommend switching to vodka soda or for a less healthy drink try and old fashion at least you won't be able to consume as many calories. Also sip the hard liquor drinks spend as much as you can afford which will make you not pound your drinks and run out of booze quicker.
I've dropped weight. I've been anywhere in the 202 to 210 range the past 20 years. I've been hovering right around 200 the last year and even dropped down to 198/199 on a few occasions.
So you aren't eating much and consuming most calories from beer? If not assume you are young with high metabolism if so that will catch up to you. I use to be able to drink all the time and would laugh at the "old people" who only drank hard liquor because of gaining weight with beer. Then one day it hit me I was one of the "old people". ha

This is probably one of the most perplexing “normal” behaviors, to me at least.

I don’t experience anything positive when I drink, which is seldom. Not really sure what a “buzz” is suposed to feel like, but alcohol just makes me sleepy, like taking a Benadryl.

But that sedation isn’t relaxing, and I’ve never experienced euphoria from alcohol. Just not how my body processes it.

The only drinks I consume are fruity, “girly” ones, and that’s for their non-alcoholic/sweet content.

Fundamentally, not too interested in any mind-altering substances, at least while my mind and body are working well. But I plan on indulging in psychadelics when things start to break down, and escaping reality becomes more appealing.

I have a well balanced diet and not missing any meals. I'm active and do lot's of outdoor activities. Feels like I'm balancing everything well. But again...I do need to drink less. It's just hard right now during fresh hop season. LOL

It's a myth that drinking liquor or wine is so much better from a calorie standpoint than beer. Yes, it's lower, but not by much.

On average, beer is about 150 calories, wine is 125, and most liquor is about 100. And the liquor is that low only if you drink it straight without adding other stuff to it.

If you're only doing 1-2 drinks, those extra calories in beer aren't that significant. And if you're drinking a lot, then you're still getting a lot of calories from your liquor, so don't kid yourself that drinking liquor won't contribute to weight gain.

Here's some info on it

And that Old Fashioned you recommended earlier in the thread has 150 calories, the same as beer. Even your vodka/soda is 130 calories, so basically the same as well.

I've stopped - for the most part - drinking beer. I've taken a shining to seltzers and will order those whenever a flavor I like is available. If it's not that, it's vodka. I will only drink beers if I'm on a brewery crawl with friends (and most of those places now have seltzers) or if I'm at a place that only serves beer... which is rare.

I drink vodka w/ lemonade on my Tuesday "solo happy hours".

I'm head of sales for a brewery, so... yes.

I had a beer (by myself) at lunch at a local pub that's a great customer.

We taste every beer we make before and after carbonation/packaging and then run shelf life tests to make sure our product holds up.

Plus all those low fill cans have to go somewhere...

Not a myth when someone is downing 6+ beers daily minimum vs less vodka sodas which is what I mentioned earlier. Typical IPA is 180-200 calories that's easily 1k - 1.1k in calories drinking only 6 IPAs. Vodka less than 100 calories so even downing 6 per day that's cutting your caloric intake by 50%. I'm speaking from a typical American male who drinks beer not outliers. As for old fashion that's occasional which I mentioned because of calories and I'm not downing 6 of them. More of a treat. Meanwhile most men can easily drink 6 beers and not considered a big deal.
I didn't mention wine, I don't drink it (extremely rare and only red when I do) just like beer due to the calories and don't like it during hot months.
I'm a man and drink liquor either neat or with one ice cube or cut it with club soda depending on mood or temperature. Old fashion no more than 2 occasionally. When younger didn't matter could drink anything without any health or weight gain and none of what I'm saying pertains to younger men or doesn't gain weight from it.

If it's not hurting your health and you aren't gaining fat from it why drink less? Assume you are younger if so one day more than likely you won't have a choice and will look back wondering why you lowered your intake for no reason! ha

If I go out somewhere for a beer by myself but have a little chit-chat with others is that social or non-social?
IMO... going out makes it social. But if you're alone, maybe it's not. I guess that going out and chit-chating makes it social.
I’ve been single for a few years so about 2-3 times a week, if I’m not dating, I’ll go out to a Sports Bar or a bar on the boardwalk alone and eat at the bar and have 2 or 3 beers. I counted that as social. Sometimes I talk to other patrons and/or bartenders, and it’s out in public, so I consider that social. If I went to dive bars and just sat and did hard drinking, that goes beyond social, I’d say.

I drink somewhere between 1/2 glass to a full glass of wine just about every night with dinner. About once a year, I will have a couple of bourbons at home. I never drink while out because I'm always the driver.

I’m assuming this is tongue in cheek…if not, what do you think of males who put multiple ice cubes in their liquor, or *gasp* drink flavored beverages?

I voted no but in honor of this thread I am having a bloody Mary tonight while I watch the Brew Crew. And trying to use up the old bottle of bloody mary mix.

Developed some very bad habits during Covid that I didn’t drop, the wife and I were drinking 5-6 nights a week. Got serious about stopping recently, hoping my liver is OK 😬

Your mind working well is the best time to enjoy pyschadelics

Never discount getting a new perspective on things and almost definitely that will happen

Just like a grown man ordering off the kids plate at a nice restaurant. Like drowning ketchup on a very expensive steak that's on you. If you like to sip and get to enjoy a nice liquor then no need to mask it with flavored beverage right? One should develop their palette. What I think of someone doesn't really matter as long as they don't care but a grown man who needs to water down their liquor or mask it with sugar fruit juice doesn't reflect well on them just like again ketchup on a nice steak or burping at the table. If you don't care what others think or want to explore a deeper path into tastes then that's all that matters.

Thanks for the response.

Considering what’s “adult” or “manly” is fairly arbitrarily defined, I don’t worry much about what others drink, or the condiments they use.

As long as they don’t impact my meal through their behavior, I couldn’t care less about the choices people make. If they think slathering steak in catsup constitutes haute cuisine, who am I to judge?

Admittedly, I do cringe a little at the process of choosing adult beverages. Not only I do find it pretentious, it often delays food being served. That’s a lot more disruptive to my experience than an errant belch, though I guess there are cultures where even the latter is within societal norms.

But ultimately, I believe acquiring “refined” tastes reflects little more than susceptibility to peer pressure, and a desire to flaunt status or sophistication.

My wife doesn't drink at all and only a couple of our friends do.

So I drink alone.

And often. Borderline alcoholic if I'm 100% honest. Only reason I say borderline is I voluntarily went a month without drinking at all recently and it was no problem. I also never get really get drunk. I just drink until buzzed for a bit about 4x's a week and most often by myself.

Worked in liquor for a long time. The more "expert" a person is about spirits, the less fancy they are about them.

Met a million guys who insist on neat whisky. Meantime, every whisky distiller I met uses a splash of water, to make it easier to drink.

Master Sommelier i knew: "It's a bottle of wine, it's not the baby Jesus" 😂

Yes, I wouldn't call it a lot, but it is more than I'd like. It's one of the reasons why I'm pursuing a new job. I've been finding myself 2x per week logging on at 8:30 pm for a couple hours of work and have paired with a couple pours. I decided last week no matter whether I get a job or not I'm cutting off that habit effective immediately - both the night working and the drinks. Aside from that I'd guess my wife & I drink at home on average 1-2x per month and now that the kids are getting older it's been trending less lately - although we are going out more to offset.

Would be curious what you did.

I’ve definitely become much more “sophisticated” with my drinking as I’ve gotten older (and having more disposable income). My drinking consists of craft beer, mid-shelf bottles of whiskey and cocktails. As someone said earlier, I drink for the experience and nuanced tastes, never to get drunk (or even buzzed).

As for a splash of water - most sommeliers will recommend that unless it’s already low proof enough where adding water would take it below regulations. I find it’s almost always a preference thing. To me, I like to get my whiskey in the 105-115 range as that is the sweet spot for drinkability but full flavor. But there’s no right or wrong here - it’s almost always preference.

Wait, among all the other flavors, are you saying you can discern alcohol content within a 10 proof range? Have you confirmed your sensitivity with a blind taste test?

My palate is more binary: either I can taste the alcohol, or it’s effectively masked by whatever sweet/sour stuff that’s been added to it.

If you give me a 10 proof window on either side, absolutely. Not 100% but its noticeable enough to tell the difference between say 120 and 100 or 100 and 80.

To be clear though - this is talking about straight spirit and not cocktails.

Understood. I just assumed refined drinkers gained appreciation for all the subtle accent flavors in spirits, not alcohol content to the granularity you describe.

When I drink, the goal is to taste the non-alcoholic stuff: the girlier, the better. I sometimes say as much when I order.
