When loading the dishwasher, do you put forks in facing up or down?

Both up and down.
I think the real hazard is if they "spoon" and the bottom fork doesn't get clean. So one up/one down in each compartment. (Goes without saying, although I'm saying it, that I do the same thing with spoons.)

All silverware up. Our current dishwasher seems to work best in this manner.

Sidenote, why can my wife not correctly load the dishwasher? It's not about cramming as much stuff in as possible. It's about getting as much stuff in as possible, in a way that they key surfaces will still get clean!

We've been married almost 20 years, this is a fight I have given up on. I just double check everything in the dishwasher before starting it.

I think a blind puppy could load a dishwasher better than my wife. On the rare occasion that she puts some things in there, it's almost like it's a prank or something. No one could actually load it the way she does.

Our silverware cage in our dishwasher has a top that is slotted. You can only insert forks and spoons in by the handle. So those go in tops up. I always place knives in blade first. My wife things knives don't get as clean that way, so she used to stick them in blades up . . . until she sliced herself sticking something in the bottom section of the dishwasher.

I'll do both but most times I have them facing down as it's "easier" as usually I will be holding it by the handle to make sure no gunk is on it before I put it in :oldunsure:

FWIW... been loading/unloading dishwashers for 40 years... never once been stabbed by a knife or fork. Spoons however...

Down.

When I was 11 or 12 I was a pitcher for our little league all-star team. We were in the state quarterfinals or some **** and I was scheduled to pitch. Was putting my dishes away and some jackoff (probably my stupid older brother) put a steak knife in the dishwasher sticking straight up. I was in a hurry to make it to my game so I tossed my fork in the holder and managed to slice my pointer finger open. Got 4 stitches in that thing.

Couldn't pitch, obviously. Made it to the game a little late with a stitched up finger only to see overweight and 100% lousy kid named AJ give up several homeruns. He was trying his stupid changeup, which was just an @Eephus pretty much. Our team got smoked like 14-2 or something.

So now, everything points down in my dishwasher.

Knives are definitely down. The poll is about forks only.

Yes. I know. My little rant was to emphasize that everything points down. Once you allow someone to put a spoon facing up, next comes the fork. And before you know it I am reliving my nightmare with sharp knives staring me down everytime I open the dishwasher

This is the right answer. I only put two forks in each compartment, one up and one down, then the next go into the next compartment. Same with spoons and knives.

Forks, spoons, butter knives, all go in facing up. My dishwasher has a removable caddy on the side of the bottom drawer, so they're to the side and out of the way, and when its time to empty it I pull the whole caddy out, place it on my countertop, and can carefully extract everything to put away. Never been stabbed.

Steak knives don't go in the dishwasher. Handwash those only.

Up and down.

I like the dishwasher loaded in order with all the plates lined up in the right spot. It cleans better and easier to unload.

My wife throws everything in wherever. Drives me nuts.

Also I wash the bigger pots and pans by hand as they stop the spray cycle from hitting everything..she just throws them in on top of stuff..

Looks like a stock photo of some sort. You don't actually do this do you? I have a Bosch with this rack, but do not use it for silverware. Pain in the *** loading into and removing from those little slots. We use this rack for spatulas, serving spoons, tongs and such. We also have the basket on the bottom rack which is where the silverware goes facing up, except for knives which go blade down.

Up but not for danger reasons. If I point them down the tynes go through the bottom of the basket and stick out sometimes catching on the bottom causing the drawer to get stuck and just causing issues. Never does that when up.

We do, or I should say my wife does*. It works well.

*when I do the dishes, I normally just do them by hand

I didn't vote because I use the half up,half down method mentioned above.
I also have a wife who is terrible at loading the dishwasher -jams in too much stuff so it doesn't get clean and I've been punctured twice because she puts knives in blade up

Both, either? All silverware crammed into the first hole. 🤦‍♂️

As others mentioned, I’m also the dishwasher organizer. It really does seem like others just open up the dishwasher and drop whatever in, wherever it lands.
My wife is better than the kids, but I’ll get the kids to come back and put them in the right spot when I see them do it. If I don’t see them, it becomes a game of “who took the cookie from the cookie jar, who me, couldn’t be…” as nobody accepts responsibility - which is my pet peeve.

Due to ease of sticking in the tray - forks and spoons up, knives down, chopsticks up if there's no rack on the upper shelf to lay them horizontally.

It's a Bosch dishwasher. What would blow your mind even more is how quiet it is. We bought a counter top depth Bosch fridge a couple of years ago as well, it's a pretty cool design.
I have heard that Bosch is the cream of the crop for dishwashers.
We have one and it sucks. The power button sticks and you basically have to pre-wash everything otherwise the crap will still be on the dishes and silverware after the cycle.

I’m pretty sure my wife thinks there is some sort of dishwasher nymph that lovingly hand cleans each item in there, that can be the only explanation for how she loads it the way she does

My favorite is when she throws like a spatula or large wooden spoon in the silverware tray, right in front of the dishwasher pod door, so that we can run a full cycle without actually deploying any detergent

Another favorite is stacking things so that they interfere with the thing that spins and sprays water on them to rinse them

This. My wife and daughter load the dishwasher like rabid raccoons.
