General Malaise

Footballguy
This might be a Honda and if it is, forgive me, but there's a bit of debate going on in one of my fantasy leagues over what month is the best.  A few guys are of a mind that October is best - baseball moves into the postseason, football is in high gear with the wheat separating from chaff, fall colors in the leaves, chili/stew/crockpot weather and many other reasons given.

But October is being contested by guys who hate to rake leaves, don't want to say goodbye to summer and have tossed around months like May or July being superior.

I have my own thoughts, but will leave it to you, the fine folks of the FFA to banter and vote.  Honestly, I don't think my mind is completely made up yet, so.....BEST MONTH, whatcha got?

Here in Texas I love November, cool mornings and warm afternoons. In more Northern states I could see October fitting the bill. February is second for the same reason, but there's more of a chance of having a bout of ice for a day or two.

This is going to be extremely regionally biased.  In Minnesota, July would be in my top three due to the weather, but I'm sure in parts of the south, July is unbearable (or maybe it just was to me not used to that climate).

October is good for the reasons posted.  The weather (here) is fairly predictable, and we normally don't get snow.  We are in the middle of the severe weather options, so being outside is doable in the right clothes.  Football, fall foods, changing colors, etc, all good things.

But we only get a few months of summer, so June is up there too.  Good weather when its not raining.  Kids are out of school.  June foods are good too with the grill in high rotation.  Spring yardword is done, so other than mowing, it is low maitnenance and you can generally just enjoy your yard.

Tie breaker here might be that I much more enjoy what the womenfolk are wearing in June over October.

Yeah, that's a good call.  Definitely plays a role on how people make decisions.

I grew up in the south and summers were awful.  I don't think I could ever move back to Texas and deal with July/August.  Just brutal.

My wife is from Michigan and her family is all there, so moving to Michigan has been discussed numerous times.  However, I'm not sure if I could handle the winters.  I've gone there a few times in December/January and it is miserable.  I don't go back with her anymore; she takes the little kids without me.  Hard pass.

Pacific Northwest isn't for everybody, but it's where I want to be.  Rarely drops below freezing, tops 100 maybe once or twice a summer (we didn't get there this year and we used our A/C 5-6 times total), long summer nights with a lot of rainy days that help keep the area green, which is nice.  I sold my car in March and probably won't get another one anytime soon.  I enjoy being able to walk to the train, bypass the clogged highway down to my office and strolling the mile and half into work without the elements beating down on me.  A little rain, no problem.  I don't even use an umbrella.

Can we all agree that February is the worst?   No more football, the NBA is boring until the playoffs, NCAA tourney is still a month away, the weather sucks almost everywhere except the south and maybe parts of California, no great holidays...good thing it's the shortest month because nuts to February.

I'm going with August.  Warm, beautiful weather here in SoCal.  Football is starting, kids are wrapping up their summer breaks.

I just love summer best and August gets the nod over June/July based on football kicking off.

I do love fall too, don't get me wrong.  It's usually still warm here, too.  So... honorable mention to October.

End of Sept and Oct. I love fall. The colors, cooler weather and the best shows are back! Halloween and scary movies are my fav. Yes, I'm in heaven right now.

leafpeeping, balloon fiestas, wikkidpissah - need i say mo'ctober?!
Reminds me -- flying out to the ABQ balloon fiesta next week.  Going to stop in Chimayo for lunch and church visit (as you recommended in the small town thread) on my way back from Chama and the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad.

No great holidays?

punxantawney Phil disagrees!

All of this really depends on where you live.  Lots of places in the South are awesome during February.

i'll be the outlier.  january.  freaking holidays are over, ski season is ramping up!  football playoffs.  new year, fresh start, all that.  i live in so cal, so day to day weather is a non factor.

Yeah, you're not wrong.  I went to college in Mississippi and I recall days in Feb getting into the upper 60s, maybe touching 70 and then cooling WAY off at night.   Some pretty significant swings with shorts during the day and jackets at night.

February in Oregon stinks.

the aspens should be outrageous. too late for Chimayo green chile (my favorite - best combo of meat, sweet & heat) - it starts to turn orange in August - unless one gets a bag of frozen roasted. most people don't know this, but chiles have terroir, just like wine grapes. there are spots in Chimayo & Truchas where pepper seeds have been cycled into the same plots of ground for almost a millenium and the difference is palpable.

and there's no morning bite like October in the Sangres - it's a splash pool of air & essence. enjoy....................#takemewithyou

September normally.  Great time to do stuff outside.  College football is starting and the heat and humidity are usually giving way.  Except this year.  We can start getting ice storms in latter October.

I almost voted Feb. Most reliable snow for skiing in the Rockies. Agree it's not a good time for spectator sports.

May - no brainer

Four major soccer leagues are coming down to the wire (EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A & La Liga)

NHL playoffs (easily the best sports playoff series)

NBA playoffs

MLB is kicking into gear and each team is still mathematically in it (even the Cubs)

Kentucky Derby

First paid day off since New Year's day

Weather is still nice throughout the country - no hurricane season

No MLK or Presidents Day off?

October. And it's not even close for my area.

Football, hockey, great weather.

I schedule the annual Vegas trip for every October. Weather is great there too.

Yeah, one of the guys in the league countered with May and was mocked.  I defended May for many of the reasons you cite, not one of them being soccer related. ;)

I voted October. Have always loved fall - cooler weather, football, leaves. Probably also has to do with my birthday being then also even though I've never made or had a big deal made of it.

Yeah, I don't get adults who make their birthday out to be some sort of huge holiday.  People who use the turn "Birthday Month" baffle me.

Not for me   New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving + Friday, Christmas, fin
Markets are closed on MLK, President's Day and Good Friday which is nice but so few other people have all of these off so I'm generally bored on these days.

My wife says hi.  Her birthday is on the 13th.  Every month for a year leading up to her 40th she celebrated the 13th of each month.Ugh.

My dad is the only adult male that ever made anything out of this birthday.  Whenever the first rolled around, he would say January January January! in this obnoxious voice to remind us all that his birthday was coming up.  Once, as a resistant teen, I told him it annoyed me, and that if he said it again I wasn't getting him a present.  Instead of doing what he should of done (slapped me), it just continued to say it to me constantly.  Being the stubborn mule I am, I didn't get him a present.  I felt bad when he was opening presents from everyone, but he never said anything to me.  He probably knew how bad I felt.  Our relationship steadily went down from there, and we are merely cordial these days.  Looking back, as an adult, he probably liked making a big deal about his birthday because his childhood was rotten growing up in what was probably near poverty, and two alcoholic parents.  He now had a good family and probably like celebrating life with us.

Long story short, January is not my favorite month.

December: Christmas, New Years Eve, birthday, vacation days off work, work is slow, festive lights everywhere.

I was going to say October because of college and pro football plus mlb playoffs,  but I'll put it 2nd to this.

This is more a female thing, no?  Only guy I know who does this is gay.
I knew a divorced guy who made a point of taking his young daughter out not on her birthday, but his.  He was later very angered that his birthday was ruined by 9/11 (his birthday).  Not sure if I ever knew another person who walked around with his head up his butt quite as much.

This fantasy league sounds great.  Can we get a breakdown on rosters, scoring and draft method?

Jesus, BD....way to bring us all down.

Voted oct but may is up there.   Lots of day light, temps are wonderful, grass looks great, get the day off where youre not obligated to do anything.

If work didnt suck it'd be September, but because work sucks it's October. Leaves change in October, but they don't fall until November. So the raking isnt until then. Weather is at peak comfort and sports are in full effect. Spring generally has more cold/windy/rainy days and the ground is all saturated because of it. The good May days are great, but there are more bad days than Sep/Oct.

Speaking as someone whose Father is no longer of this world with #### left unsaid

Buy that man something January themed for Christmas and hook him up on his Birthday. He made a mistake that day. All fathers make mistakes. Give him some love while you still can.

6:16pm and I'm about to grill some sockeye salmon.  Rained a little today but nice now.  Lower 60s, will cool off tonight and will be cold tomorrow for my daughter's soccer game.  College football is on!  Sept not half bad.  Upper tier month.
