I am sure part of my contempt for the film was related to expectations and it was, on some levels, visually interesting (sadly Spielberg took visuals to the point latter day Lucas levels of distraction) but it was such poorly constructed and executed storytelling, of what could have been a fascinating concept, with one of the absolutely worst endings I have ever seen (no hyperbole). Honestly if they had just left him at the bottom of the ocean I probably wouldn't even consider it for worst ever (just terribly disappointing) but that saccharine and desperate attempt to put lipstick on that pig was pathetic.

AI. I suppose it depends on how you classify "worst". Absolute worst vs. relative worst. Absolute, in this context, isn't very telling. There are hundreds of low budget or made for TV movies that are horrible - but you don't expect them to be good in the first place. I expected quite a bit from AI. Director, actors, hype etc. etc. and then I paid for the privilege of watching that steaming pile of dung.

Overrated =/= worst ever, I get what you're saying about some of these being very overrated compared to expectations, worst ever label is hard to understand for most of these. To each their own, but still, Spirited Away is one of the best animated films ever. American animation to this day doesn't come close to the story telling and animation value there imo. Inception and Avatar both fail compared to their budget, but again, still good entertainment.

Totally agree Short Circuit was a much better film though, good comparison and another example of how better technology has not translated to better sci fi flix. Just not imaginative enough nowadays.

It was OK. The animation wasn't anything spectacular, the story at face value was "meh". If you try hard to read in a bunch of allegory and metaphor into it it becomes OK - but nothing special. It was Alice in Wonderland meets Animal Farm for me. However, the primary reason I consider it overrated is because it is in the top 40 movies of all time on IMDB and, when I saw it in the theaters, it received a standing ovation. I felt like I was Spirited Away to bizarro world when that happened.

Avatar was great to look at but the screenplay was about as recycled and overused as a film could possibly be. There was really not a single interesting or unique plot development. Nothing in the story that made you go "Wow" or made you even give a second thought to.

I enjoyed it but pretty much exclusively for the visual feast that it was.

The problem was the beginning and middle were so unbelievably bad. Every moment that Jude Law was in that movie sucked - I don't mind him as an actor but his character, and every bit of the plot involving him, was complete tripe. I'd rather watch the last 15 minutes twelve times than watch three hours of ridiculous nonsense that took a sharp left turn into a completely different ending that didn't fit what he was doing in any way whatsoever.

*shrug* I recognize that as far as a hand drawn flick it was very good - but I think many of the CGI animated films are better.

What? That ending was horse#### that a pig ate and then #### out again.

Not saying the rest of the film was much better but that ending was turd custard (made from twice #### horse slop) and by far the worst part of that film.

*shrug* I recognize that as far as a hand drawn flick it was very good - but I think many of the CGI animated films are better.

I suspected that might be the case and I think the two styles shouldn't be compared on any level.

Waterworld is a guilty pleasure for me. I thought John Carter was actually pretty good, although I had low expectations since it seemed to get stoned by critics.

Waterworld? John Carter?

Waterworld is a guilty pleasure for me. I thought John Carter was actually pretty good, although I had low expectations since it seemed to get stoned by critics.

Waterworld is a more entertaining film than it gets credit for but, in light of the expectations, there is little doubt that it failed on virtually every level.

No where near as bad a film as A.I. though.

I suspected that might be the case and I think the two styles shouldn't be compared on any level.

When I hear people say "best animated film ever" I feel obligated to.

AI - Directed by Spielberg and had that kid from Sixth Sense. High hopes going into the theater - it was 3 hours of boredom.

Spirited Away, Inception, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Avatar fall into the category of most overrated.

Wow... Spirited Away was fantastic. You must be one of the select few who it didn't blow away. Avatar was visually stunning. The story was so-so, but it was a very, very good movie. CTHD was good although I didn't consider it as good as other. Didn't see Inception.

Guess each to their own eh.

When I see people list it as their favorite movie of all time (more common than you would think) I am shocked. I think part of the problem is that many who went to go see it went due to director and the hand drawn animation. I don't care about that at all - I wanted a good movie - no caveats - and it failed to deliver.

The ending of A.I. was interesting. It wasn't what I had hoped for, and it was totally unrealistic, but it was an interesting idea, I guess. The problem was the beginning and middle were so unbelievably bad. Every moment that Jude Law was in that movie sucked - I don't mind him as an actor but his character, and every bit of the plot involving him, was complete tripe. I'd rather watch the last 15 minutes twelve times than watch three hours of ridiculous nonsense that took a sharp left turn into a completely different ending that didn't fit what he was doing in any way whatsoever.

What? That ending was horse#### that a pig ate and then #### out again.Not saying the rest of the film was much better but that ending was turd custard (made from twice #### horse slop) and by far the worst part of that film.

The ending was mildly interesting. This is a story about an artificial boy who just wanted to be with his family. The family was long gone but he had a chance to see his mother one more time. He could only spend one day with her, would he like to do it now or wait? Would he spend it doing mundane things or try to make it meaningful in some way? There were some potentially interesting bits in there. The weird sparkly alien thing was odd, and it was all tell, no show, so I totally agree that it sucked, but if they could remake any part of that movie, I would rather they turn the end into a less sucky two hours than sit through some weird and totally meaningless journey with jude law through a flaming circus deathmatch and into an ocean. The whole movie was just so pointless.

And it is one of the best animated films ever. Comparing story elements is one thing but comparing hand drawn animation to computer rendered animation seems like a stretch.

I am sorry you didn't enjoy it but it is fairly consistently rated as one of the top films in any class. And you wouldn't get any argument from me on that score. Certainly it is in my top 100 films, not sure where but it's in there.

It seems to me that your problem is as much with the hand drawn animation as anything else but the film was so much more than that. It didn't work for you, no big deal. I hated A.I., some people loved it. I am pretty sure those people work for al qaeda.

The ending was a turrible attempt to give the audience a saccharine overwrought happy ending.

ETA: Making a film about the overarching concepts from the ending may, in fact, be something interesting. However the execution of this concept in A.I. was garbage.

What little I remember of this I do recall being surprisingly awful, unlike McGregor's The Island which was as expected, awful.
