I'll give you No Escape.  I had to watch Buck and the Preacher.  Why no escape?  That was backwhen airlines showed movies, and we were at 30,000 feet.  It took walking out on a movie to a whole new level.

I just want to fit in.

I saw Fight Club after every person I knew said it was the best movie they'd ever seen. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen... so I'm including it here the way everybody else is.

 
What part of Fight Club was awesome?  Because I saw it and had high expectations and came away bitterly disappointed.   It was just dumb.  The whole premise was dumb.  It was an exercise in violence porn and nothing more.  A few rants against consumerism, I guess?

Did you watch it on TCM last night? When there's not some good history show to fall asleep to, i usually put on TCM. Did so around 12:30 and GWTW was on. Had to change it cuz all the hysterics and "i do declare"s and "birthin no babies" were just too irritating to tuck in with.

I'm closer to this view of it than most others, but it is one of the most generationally important films of all time. I learned soooo much that i couldnt figure out about Gen X/Y from this movie and the reactions to it.

The parts that weren't about fight club.

It doesn't glamorize violence, it satirizes/caricatures it. And it rants against both consumerism and hedonism alike. The Narrator is no happier when he's Tyler than when he's an office done.

But anyways...It's funny.

It's basically a critique against masculinity and whether it has properly been suppressed through societal advances.  

I thought it was brilliant.

There's no way to debate humor.  You laughed, I didn't.  I couldn't wait for the movie to end and will never watch it again.  I don't care what message is trying to be delivered if it's being delivered in an envelope of flaming manure.

I would put Forrest Gump into that "meh" category.  Maybe because it was over hyped but I'm watching it and I'm not seeing "brilliant" or whatever.  I think Tom Hanks is a good actor but I didn't get anything out of that movie whatsoever. To be honest, I thought it was a really stupid movie, not the worst movie but way over rated.

If it's not the worst movie, it's at least the worst epic war movie. It was financed by the Moonie (Unification Church cult leader Sun Myung Moon.) Its long, its boring, awful plot and horrific special effects. Made $5M on a $46M budget.

Maybe the worst only because of expectations.

Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy...still had some power when this came out.  But man was it awful.

 
I realize that these like and dislikes things are subjective, but IMO there probably are a couple rules that could be followed if we are talking about a terrible movie.  What I had at the top of my head:

1.  It has to to have all of:  bad direction, dialogue, plot, and acting. 

You know, basically no redeeming quality.  IMO that takes out a lot of movies that are listed.  As much as I hate Wes Anderson movies, they don't belong because they are fantastically shot and have sharp dialogue.  Something like Thin Red Line belongs nowhere near the lists b/c again, it is a beautifully shot movie.  I think an easy way to look at this is probably....

2.  It can't have won or been nominated for any major awards besides a Raspberry. 

I guess we can maybe bring up examples but I can't think of any truly terrible movie that would qualify. 

3.  It can't have an average to above average rating.

Sorry, but if 50% of people like it, it's probably not a movie that should talked about as worst ever.  So I can't claim that Fury Road is the worst movie ever. 

4.  It can't be trying to be bad. 

This takes out stuff like Sharknado and the like. 

Again, the question is "worst movie you've seen", so maybe people are better at avoiding #### like The Happening than I am.  I just find it really hard to believe that a lot of the movies that have been mentioned are actually the worst thing you've seen.

 
I watched a horror movie called "Tusk" once and I still wonder why I didn't turn it off.  I think I was too horrified at the movie rather than the story

 
Not the worst ever, but going from great expectations to horrible reality was The Thin Red Line. I had such high hopes, but was never more pissed off at the end of a movie than I was after that piece of dogsh#t.

Yeah, I addressed that too, and my post still stands for this thread.  Unless you have only a handful of movies, something like Thin Red Line shouldn't be mentioned.  

My opinion is stuff that doesn't meet the criteria posted isn't a terrible movie in the first place, so shouldn't be in the discussion.  Obviously you disagree with my theory.  

I guarantee if I started a new thread the responses would be the same.

My statement of likes and dislikes and subjectiveness is this:

A movie like Grand Budapest Hotel I dislike a lot.  A lot of people love it, so that is subjective.  It is a beautifully shot movie and wouldn't meet the criteria I listed, so it shouldn't be in this thread. :shrug:
