What's up with.... (things that make you go "hmm") (1 Viewer)

There's things I notice out and about in the world that make me scratch my head. I gave thought of putting these random thoughts in the "Pet Peeve" thread, but they're not really peeves of mine... just things that make me go "hmm...". And they're not "Actions/Trends that Need to Stop", either. So yeah, starting this thread. :D

For example... what's up with these tinted, plastic covers that people put over their license plates? Are they supposed to combat red light cameras? How are these things legal? You can't even see what the letters/numbers are unless you're super close. You'd think these things would be illegal. Do people think they just look cool? Are they so OCD that they don't want their plates to get stolen or dirty? I dunno, just something I notice.

I have a laundry list of other "things that make me go hmm" that I'll get to at a later date.... but what say you? What actions/trends do you see out there that have you scratching your head? Maybe I'm just getting old?

For me as to serious business things, pro-lifers who then oppose social welfare programs designed to assist the newborn upon birth. Makes no sense to me. Pick a lane whereby either you care about the unborn child or you don't.

For less serious business, anybody who decides to get ear gauges that doesn't suffer from body dysmorphia or whatever it's called.

Mine has always been cruises. I know different strokes for different folks and all but I have never heard or seen anything about cruises that has any appeal to me whatsoever.
Really? I'd prefer an on-land all-inclusive but a cruise is basically an all-inclusive (e.g. alcohol, decent food, and adult party time) on a boat. Not my first choice, but I get why people like them.

I think those covers can defeat some traffic cameras, but they also may be illegal. I bet some people also get them for their aesthetic value.

I don't understand why people like driving big vehicles. I can see the practical value of trucks and SUVs, but it blows my mind many (most) people prefer driving something less maneuverable, more difficult to park, etc.

They look incredibly claustrophobic, anywhere you visit is on a timer, and then there’s the norovirus. That’s just the beginning of issues with cruises for me.

But I don’t like all inclusives on land either. I like to go out and explore wherever I am, that includes food.

Def illegal in many states. Not only to foil red light cameras but scofflaws use them to take bridges & tunnels daily. Big issue in NYC, along with scratched or defaced plates that serves the same purpose. Walk along any precinct & you’ll see them by the dozen.

Why do people leave the cancer-warning stickers on their cars for years after buying them? You take off the MSRP sheet, why not that too? Do you really find it necessary to warn everyone who enters your car that they shouldn't eat the dashboard? I see like 40 cars a day with these still on, well after that "new car smell" has faded away.

Pretty sure "illegal" in CA, but, police are forbidden from enforcing it. That is, they can't pull you over for any mechanical violation... license plate missing, brake lights out, etc. They can add it to a speeding ticket or other moving violation, but they can't stop a car just for having a cosmetic issue. (Police had used such violations as a pretext for a bunch of questionable stops targeting certain minorities, and then lost the ability as a result).

As an aside, before this changed, like 20 years ago I had a car that didn't have a front license-plate mount. The front plate, of course, is the one the red-light camera sees. So there was a period of 'strict enforcement' where a car could be pulled over for not having a front plate, and I was dinged a few times. The fine? $10 if I showed up at a courthouse with the plate attached to the car, which they called a "fix-it ticket". Since there wasn't a mount, I'd just use a couple of zip-ties to affix the plate to the grill. Get an officer to come outside and look at it, sign off on the ticket, and back on the street after paying the $10. The cost of a red-light camera ticket? $460. Did they malfunction all the time and were you not allowed to appeal? You bet. So I'd cut the plate off when I got home. I figure if they pulled me over 46 times I'd break even on getting a camera ticket, so as long as they didn't get me that often, I was in the green.

Some women's eyebrows. Why do they even mess with them? Just leave them alone.
Are you talking about the kind where it looks like they drew it on with a sharpie? I don’t get that either. I can’t believe someone does that, looks in the mirror, and is ok with it.
Yeah, they pluck the eyebrows out and then draw them in with a pencil. If they just didn't pluck them out in the first place they wouldn't have to draw them in.

Some of the license covers use stealth technology to absorb the radar waves when a cop tries to check the speed of a vehicle.

Another license plate "hmm".... folks that drive around with the dealership license plate frame. You know those things are removable, right? Or are you just OK with advertising the dealership that tried to squeeze you out of every last dollar you could afford? I walk around my work business park a couple of times a day (when in the office) for exercise and would estimate that anywhere from 1/3 - 1/2 of cars I see have these things on. Why?

It takes effort to remove them, never underestimate the laziness of the average person.

could not care less what my license plate frame says. i had a raider one on my last car. current one is what it came with.

Not all cruises are anything alike. They can be as different as one kind of soup to another. Those huge floating rabbit warrens are an absolute no for me.

Gotta represent the S&B baby! (or in my case, our alma mater)

Yeah the giant ones where they cram as many people in as possible and even the pool areas look incredibly claustrophobic are what I’m talking about.

I’ve heard good things about European river cruises for example.

My wife makes the dealer remove that and all the dealer stickers they try and put on the car.

I can understand the license plate frame. Some people just don't take 'em off. But stickers? That's a step way too far.

I don't blame Mrs. CD!

My initial response was to agree with you. After going through all it in my head and after writing the below I changed my mind. I would do another…..

You have to be people person. If you participate in all the events, go to the shows and figure out that you can get the exact same excursions on your own it can be a lot of fun. I went a few times when I was young and I’m not even the biggest people person. Getting absolutely hammered all day at the pool and eating like a glutton was a blast.

Cruises just aren't compatible with how I travel. Eating the local fare is maybe the biggest appeal of travel for me. Also, I would hate being on a schedule. Would much rather be on my own itinerary. And if I want a pool type vacation, there are resorts for that too, and without the claustrophobia.

I don’t know, a few years ago, I got to visit Oslo, Copenhagen, Berlin, Gdansk, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, and a few other places all in one trip, without having to rent a car, deal with language issues, or get stressed at borders.

A few years before that, it was Barcelona, Nice, Monaco, Florence, Rome, the Vatican, Naples, Athens, Stantorini, and Ehpasus, Turkey. Now I can plan future trips to see more of the places I enjoyed (Norway), and know which places to skip (Greece). It’s like staying in a five star hotel that moves while you sleep allowing you to wake up every morning in a new, interesting place.

As far as local food, there’s plenty of that.

Claustrophobia isn’t really a thing. Other than your room, which you spend as little time in as possible anyway, modern cruise ships are obscenely large.

There’s no schedule. There are usually multiple events or activities going on at all times. There’s a casino on board. Basketball, pickball, a theatre, comedy shows, game shows, etc.

I still get why people don’t want to risk the potential for disaster but cruises can be a blast.

For me as to serious business things, pro-lifers who then oppose social welfare programs designed to assist the newborn upon birth. Makes no sense to me. Pick a lane whereby either you care about the unborn child or you don't.
I know this was over a year ago, but surely you are way too smart for this ridiculous argument. It is akin to me saying pro-choice people think the poor should be exterminated because they are a net negative to society.

Is the point that without government welfare, the child is better off dead? And that the only way to help poor newborn children is through the government? And the government is the best and most efficient method of helping the poor and needy?

If you can't see past this tired, old and terrible argument you do indeed live in an echo chamber as it has been thoroughly rebutted for years now.

Conservatives donate money in massive amounts to charities for these exact causes that promote help for mothers and adoption services. Acting like pro-lifers don't care about the children and don't want to support them after birth is either because one is ignorant of the facts or just doesn't care and wants to be deceitful for political gain. I'm assume you just didn't know, but there is also some laziness and anti-conservative bias in your post as well that kind of assumes the worst.

I feel like those European river tours are a different thing than the big megacruises, if that's what people are talking about. They might be the only kind of cruise I'd be willing to try. But still, I prefer trips that stay longer in individual places than multiple short stops just getting a taste of each place. But this is personal preference.

And when I talk about claustrophobia, I'm talking about photos like the ones below. These don't look comfortable, or relaxing to me at all.

When I google cruise pool pics, these are what the majority of the options look like. Contrast those pics to the pools at many of the resorts I've been to and those are for sure still pretty busy, but much more spread out and people aren't as packed into a smaller space.

As per the schedule, I'm talking about when docked at a city and you have to make it back in time for the ship to leave. Looks like you get anywhere from 4-10 hours. The higher end of that span isnt awful, but I still like to wake up and go to bed in the actual city I'm visiting. When travelling, I'm more interested in experiencing the culture of where I'm traveling instead of activities like bowling, or pickleball.

Again, personal preference.

There's also how much cruise ships are disliked in general in a lot of the ports they arrive in, and the increased risk of getting sick from being packed close together with so many people.

All great points.

Remember back in the '80s and '90s when you would see people with a front-end bra on their car?

Why?
They looked dumb but I think they originally were for protection against rocks that get kicked up and chip your paint.
Sooooo.....having a stupid-looking black bra on the front was a better option? :ponder:

I have a feeling that some OEM manufacturer probably came up with the idea to sell more product and convince people it was needed.

Car bras are like the Hallmark holidays of the automobile industry.
