My wife finally got me to take the family to a tree farm and cut down our own tree last night. Easily one of the worst experiences I've had.

We got there and it was $65 for any size frasier fir. Of course we had to find the biggest one so we get the most value. (We have high ceilings) We walked and walked until we finally found it. A 12ft behemoth about as far from our car as you could get. They had a tractor driving around picking people up and their trees when they were done cutting, so the distance didn't matter.

It took me a good 10-15 minutes of furious cutting with the dull saw they gave me before the tree came down. Covered in dirt from laying on the ground, dripping with sweat even though it's 30 degrees and completely out of breath, we waited for the tractor. 20 minutes goes by and we haven't seen one. They had been coming by at least every 10 minutes, so we waited another ten, but still nothing and it was now dark. (They stop running them at a certain time which nobody mentioned and it wasn't posted)

I ended up having to drag this tree probably 1/2 a mile back to where we parked, stopping every 50-100ft so my legs could get a chance to stop burning.

Never again
fresh cut at home depot sounds real nice next year doesnt it?
Done that for years. Last year our HD tree died about a week after we bought it so my wife knew I would be vulnerable this year. This was supposed to be about "the experience" and "making memories".
It certainly is something you will never forget; mission accomplished :hifive:

I went with the Costco delivery tree this year and am disappointed with the bang/buck, will be going back to one of the roadside tree lot next year I'm sure.

This have come a long way in recent years I've got two artificial pre-lit trees. Come in three pieces. Pop the three pieces together and spread out the branches a bit. Done.
Got one this past weekend. Looks surprisingly good. Think it cost $65 plus tax at Home Depot. Oddly enough, was going to Home Depot to buy a real tree when I was the fake one on display.

We always get a real tree. The kids would be disappointed if we got a fake one. The scent of a real tree is a reminder of the Christmas season. It stays around for almost a month and the pine needles continue to give off the pine scent from the vacuum until the bag is changed.

Finally a realistic story. I have several similar experiences when I lived in Pennslyvania.
