When is early too early? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys. We've seen strategies for drafts throughout this website and some of the recent articles here talk about strats for picks 1 - 4 in particular. I'm trying to find a consensus for when its time to stray from the tried and true philosophy of the RB/RB this year. I'm in a 12 team PPR redraft league and the first round looks to be RB heavy. So... what I'm hoping to get from the Sharks is when you feel comfortable going after the Top 5 WRs this year after RBs 1 thru 8 are history. How many of you still go after Tier 2 RBs in Round 2?

Thanks!

I'm not a fan of going after the top 5 WRs (except for Smiff, I'm a big Smiff fan), but I'm not a fan of going RB-heavy, either. Peyton Manning and Antonio Gates are where the real value is at. Barring Steve Smith, Peyton Manning, or Antonio Gates, I generally stick with RBs, mostly because there are some "second tier WRs" that I absolutely love. To me, it makes virtually no difference whether I get a Chad Johnson/Torry Holt or a Javon Walker/Lee Evans, just because of how I have them projected. As a result, the only time it'd make sense grabbing a non-Steve-Smith WR high in the second is if I was planning on going WR/WR in the 2nd/3rd- otherwise I could just grab an RB in the 2nd and get a comparable WR in the 3rd, instead. That answer changes every season, though. Last year, I saw more of a differential between the first and second WR tiers, so I would have been more tempted to grab the 4th or 5th WR off the board. This season, that strategy just holds no appeal for me.

Tier your players. If you think youre grabbing the last 1-2 players in that top tier of WRS, but there are a lot of 3rd tier RBS left, grab that WR. Your draft position would also dictate when to grab that WR. I personally wouldnt grab a WR until Manning and my top 15 rbs this year are off the board, so thatd be no earlier than roughly middle of the 2nd round.

Call me old school or a caveman or whatever but if I see an RB in the 2nd round that I think can be a stud I'm taking him. Unless I'm getting a wide receiver at that T.O/Harrison/Moss level like back in the day it just isn't worth it to me. Even then it's close for me. Steve Smith seems to be on that level but I just don't know. If Portis is gone I'll definitely have to think about him. A great wide receiver is worth more than a good running back.
