Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

16 of 44 people will get to "own" their #1 song in this countdown. For the newbies, everyone except shuke calls a song that they get to reveal first a song they "own." :)

Tomorrow we will have our first Deja Vote already! A Deja Vote is when two people choose the same song at the same ranking. We will also in this countdown have some Menage-Falala-Trois, which is when three people choose the same song at the same spot. I'd have to double-check, but I don't believe we will have more than three people choosing the same in this countdown, unlike the last one when "Gimme Shelter" received four second-place votes.

Please note the following, which I'm calling "The Tom Petty Effect," for purposes of the daily posts. Unlike in the first countdown when everyone felt it necessary to say when something was him vs. him with the Heartbreakers, I'm not going to distinguish between some iterations of what will be considered the same artist for tabulation purposes. This will make it much, much easier on our spreadsheet mavens as well. So for this one, I'll be using the following (the rule might apply to other artists as well, but these immediately come to mind):

- Neil Young iterations will all be called "Neil Young." You needn't post to tell me which should include Crazy Horse.
- Wings iterations will all be called "Wings." You needn't post to tell me which should include "Paul McCartney and".
- Bob Marley iterations will all be called "Bob Marley." You needn't post to tell me which should include the Wailers.
- John Lennon and Yoko Ono iterations will all be called "John Lennon and Yoko Ono." You needn't post to tell me which should include the Plastic Ono Band.

Thank you.
Management.

for reference sake, if you will
... were any #1 songs "owned" in the two prior shebangs?

I gotta tell ya ...

I stand with @shuke on this matter.

Yes, I’d have to go back and look, but I think in the British Isles one we had a similar number that were owned.

What? That can’t be! You had my favorite line in the whole thing: “If you liked the song so much, you should have ranked it lower.” :lmao:

12/45 were "owned" in the UK version.
I'm not sure if the ratio for the US one was ever said.

Thank you! Yeah, I think it didn't really come up in the US one, possibly because the selections were more varied. Since the number of artists/songs was a lot lower in the second countdown, people started getting more antsy that their favorite songs had already been discussed a lot before we got to their selection.

You're welcome! I even went to the lengths of reading some of krista4's posts for that!

Not a lot of formatting effort going into this. These were all songs I considered (not listing any post-submission regrets here).

Michéle O - Encore

Focus - Focus (Instrumental)

The Sheepdogs - I Don't Know

Stereolab Les Yper-Sound

Horrorpops - Where You Can't Follow

Three Dog Night (US band, UK singer, Canadian drummer)
Really? Darn. Would have had a high ranking song here. :kicksrock:

they were a legit powerhouse for a 4/5 year stretch - selling more platters than any artist or group on the planet during that stretch.
On another chat board Mrs. R and I read one of the other board members was Cory Wells, one of the singers of 3DN (until he passed away a few years ago). One of the most charming and genuine people it has ever been my pleasure to chat with online.
Perhaps the only white man that has sung a non-embarrassing rendition of Try a Little Tenderness.

I have a friend at work, black man, that says this, "You know that if there's one white dude in an otherwise all black band... That is THE COOLEST dude there is!"

Just got back from the UK/Belgium late yesterday. Had planned to check in here-and-there during the trip but it didn't really work out. Here's nine days worth of ins, outs, and what-have-yous...

1) I love the Big Lebowski. I even went to a Lebowski fest once. Man, there were some weird people there, which likely means I'm kind of weird too.

2) Looking really forward to this shin-dig starting tomorrow but I've totally forgotten half of the songs I picked. Was tempted to check my list in the PMs but decided to be surprised by my own picks just like I am with everyone else's.

3) Didn't get home in time to submit a contest entry (i had no shot anyway) or contemplate a last 5 out. Scanning everyone else's last five definitely is giving off an intriguing all-over-the-place vibe. I especially ♥️ the Whitetown pick.

4) Setlist.fm is a godsend for music nerds. On the flight to London, I used it to populate a spreadsheet of my Hold Steady experiences. I've seen them 34 times (actually 37 after London) and wanted to catalog the songs I heard at the shows to get a better understanding of what rarities I've been lucky enough to hear live and which I'm still missing. Over their 20 year career, they've played 115 original songs. I've seen all but 20, with only 2 of them being from a proper album. Aside from those two, there are still 5 B-sides that I'm dying to knock off the list. On the positive side, two more got added to the "finally experienced" live list last weekend, and I was shocked to learn that I've been a lucky fan for two songs that they've only played live once.

5). While on the topic of THS, there's two relative rarities of theirs that always make me think of legendary FBG Tremendous Upside (RIP, buddy). I saw THS with him 4-5 times and he was always dying to hear the B-side "Ask Her For Adderall." I'll never forget his angry reaction when they played it at a show that he bagged out on at the last minute. The other one ("Sweet Payne") had one of his favorite lyrics (Upside was the only one who just dorkily sit and drink and trade Hold Steady minutiae with me). The band played both of those songs this weekend and my wife had to ask me why I was grinning like an idiot. I can't think of the dude and not smile.

6) There really should be a rule at airports that if you stand right up against the baggage conveyor others get free reign to belt you with their bags. Just stand back 3 feet then everyone can see what's coming.

7) I went to a ton of record stores and scored a few that I've been seeking for years. I know I could buy them on discogs, but there's little that compares to the joy of walking into a place with little expectation and coming across a pristine copy of MC 900 Foot Jesus's debut album for 8 bucks. At one shop in Brussels, we spent almost an hour taking to the owner about industrial music, how Belgium really is quite different from The Netherlands, his experiences living in Williamsburg, NYC in the late 90s, U.S. gun culture, yada, yada, yada. He told me that two members of a band I picked in this countdown live within 250 meters of his store and dropped by all the time. Actually glad they weren't there because I may have had a Chris Farley moment.

8) We went to see Back to the Future: The Musical in the West End. I went in a bit unsure but damn if it wasn't a blast. I was really hoping for a number called "Get Your Damn Hands Off Her, Biff" but alas, it wasn't to be.

9) Jet lag sucks.

Dr. Fink from your neck of the woods

:lmao: :lmao: I  this. Also  the rest of your awesome post. Welcome home! The record store experiences sound so cool. Last time we were in Barcelona there was an outdoor festival/market going on where I bought some vinyl. To hell with what a pain it was to take it all over Spain and France and then get it back home unscathed. It was worth it!

Oh, and happy about the love to White Town, but I'm totally regretting it didn't make my list. Is it too late to switch? I did tell everyone that got a single one-for-one swap.

ETA: Also another RIP to Tremendous Upside. Met him twice and loved him. It seems like all the people we lose around here are cream of the crop.

@scorchy , if you want to get in on the ***OFFICIAL*** contest, I'll still take your (or anyone else's) entries since I don't think there have been any spoilers just by seeing last five out. That's one a quick top 10 so could be done easily if you're not too tired. You're also welcome to enter the other one and just make stabs in the dark without much thought.

The only thing is that I was about to post the tiebreaker guesses that I received for the ***OFFICIAL*** contest (for reasons I'll explain), so if your list comes in after that you'd have to sit out the tiebreaker or take something no one else did, in fairness.

seeing "Hocus Pocus" chucked out there already is a tad ironic
Totally missed on Hocus. This performance rules.

also known as the "Slim Whitman of Dutch Progressive Rock"

great song - never heard any else by them that I can remember though - this song was big way back in my musical wheelhouse

I remember thinking ...wow, that guy is really going bald
Ella Fitzgerald never scat sang like that.

And there's a powerful lot of baldness everywhere there.

(I hadn't thought of that song in ages. Thanks.)

And if they're a Danish harmonica player, even cooler!

I do the same with my (47) Phish concerts.

(Upside was the only one who just dorkily sit and drink and trade Hold Steady minutiae with me).

Dunno if you've met Northern Voice in person but I'm sure he would do the same.

Another note: I'll be correcting names of artists* and songs where I can so that we have consistency for the spreadsheet crew**, but I am NOT correcting any references to countries (like if they're totally wrong) or spelling thereof***. Just copying whatever was sent to me.

Sorry for all the housekeeping today, but there should be less of it once we get the first few days done.

*I just figured it out - is the song "Rhiannon" the reason only one of you knew how to spell "Rihanna"?
**Spreadsheet crew, please let me know if you've adopted a clever name in lieu of "spreadsheet crew."
***Once more...Colombia is the country, and Columbia is a school where lawyer dummies and scarf-wearing architects go.

Pip's Invitation:

Man on the Silver Mountain -- Blackmore's Rainbow (UK/US)
From Blown Speakers -- The New Pornographers (Canada/US)
Into the Fire -- Sarah McLachlan (Canada)
Open Letter (to a Landlord) -- Living Colour (US/UK)
Rock and Roll Woman — Buffalo Springfield (US/Canada)

Man on the Silver Mountain has one of my favorite riffs and was most of the world's first introduction to the force that is Ronnie James Dio.
From Blown Speakers is my favorite New Pornographers song and I have drafted it/spotlighted it in other threads. The entire Electric Version album is one big sugar rush of melody and this is its biggest high.
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing are Sarah McLachlan's biggest albums, but the single from their immediate predecessor, Touch, has always been my favorite of hers. It's forthright and irresistable, and sounds great live (my first wife and I saw her in concert twice).
Open Letter (to a Landlord) is an extremely powerful song musically and lyrically. It blew me away when they played it as their second song on their first SNL appearance, and it prompted me to check out Vivid, since clearly there was more to them than Cult of Personality.
As with the other two countdowns, to narrow things down, I not only picked 31 different artists, but did not have any personnel overlap. But I allowed personnel overlap between the 31 and the Last Five Out. This allowed me to maximize the contributions of C, S, N and Y within my parameters. Buffalo Springfield's brief output is almost universally excellent, but Rock and Roll Woman, which is basically the prototype of the CSN(Y) sound, has always been my favorite of theirs. The harmonies and the guitar work are stunning.

I'm posting the Ace Award guesses (tiebreaker for ***OFFICIAL*** contest), because I know we've had fun following this in prior countdowns. Believe it or not, TOMORROW we lose one of these guesses when another song from the same artist is selected. REMINDER not to say if you chose a different song from any of these artists.

Ace Award Guesses:

Two votes:

The Final Countdown – Europe (connection to current exercise duly noted)

Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil

One vote:

Lovefool -- The Cardigans

Battle Scar – Max Webster

99 Luftballons - Nena

For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

Some Like It Hot - Power Station

Take On Me - A-ha

Heaven and Hell- Black Sabbath

Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide – The Kings

Major Tom (Coming Home) - Peter Schilling

Layla - Derek & the Dominoes

Cult of Personality – Living Colour

David Bowie for “Under Pressure” – David Bowie and Queen (note that the poster contacted me to see if this was eligible, and I confirmed it under The Mark Ronson Rule)
