Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Dr. Octopus:

Grave Digger - Dave Matthews Band (South Africa)
In a crazy weird coincidence that I did not plan, today is the two year anniversary of my Michael’s death and this verse appears in this song:

Now you should never have to watch
Your only children lowered in the ground
I mean you should never have to bury your own babies

I'm so sorry, GB.

One-Point Selections:

simey:

Emotion – Samantha Sang (Australia)
A blast from the past that is as smooth as glass. Samantha's breathy vocals backed by the Bee Gees was a hair brush singing song for my sister and I back in '77. The song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb. Adding to what k4 and Binky have said about the Bee Gees, they've had success with Pop, Psychedelic Rock, Rock, Soft Rock, R&B, Disco and Country. They were great at so many things.

1 pointers i know & love -

Safety Dance - if this weren't the most ubiquitous tune of that particular summer, then i dunno what the eff was. immense earworm.

Lights - see previous post

Peas n' Carrots - @shuke nailed this one 😁

If You Could Read My Mind - who didn't wanna be a ghost in a wishing well upon first hearing this while still garbed in Garanimals?

Emotion - sososo gorgeous 😍

Wake Up - powerhouse stuff, my daughter adores this (from the "Where The Wild Things Are" flick) - love.

My Girl (GoneGoneGone) - leave it to Zamboni to properly own the quintessential hockey song, eh? FlinFlon, Manitoba loves it (and me!)

She Bangs - it's pretty honkin' cool for what it sets out to be. no complaints on that count.

Under The Milky Way - dreamy goff pop ... summer of '88, again - heard this constantly blaring out up 'round F.I.T. - not surprised at K4's story, tho ... always thought the kid looked bit of a d-nozz in the vid - that or he had to take a wicked Herman.

Save It For Later - and who didn't want two dozen other dirty lovers? what a great melody, breezy tune.

The Chain - always loathed the Mac and their SoCal hippie trappings (tho Mick annoyed me most, and that's a Brit right there), but Buckingham has grown on me as a musician, and i have learnt to give Stevie so much more credit than being a coked out hippie witch ... this was an incredibly tight band, and this is a yuuuge flex.

hope to get around to the newer (to me) stuff over coffee in a bit.

Pip’s Invitation:

Boys In Town - Divinyls (Australia)

I was wondering if I would knock out any Ace Award picks of I Touch Myself, but no one, er, touched that one for that contest.

Boys in Town was Divinyls' first single and the first track on their first U.S. album (which was not the same as their first release(s) in Oceania). I remember its video appearing on MTV in its early years, and I was mesmerized both by the song and the badassery of Chrissy Amphlett. Most of the song is the spunkiest sort of new wave/power pop, but it really kicks up a notch at the end with the "too much, too young" coda. I really should have put it on the This Is the End playlist in GP4.

@krista4 in my one hit wonder thread you posted about meeting the lead singer of the Church once and how pretentious he was. I loved that story, please repeat it for everyone.
Sorry, krista doesn’t do requests.
But I wrote please

It's really not much of a story, though.

Ex-Mr. krista opened for Marty Willson-Piper of The Church at a show in Chicago. Ex-Mk was really into the guy's music, though I couldn't have cared less about it. Another friend and I got roped into doing the merch sales for him. He didn't have someone arranged? I guess he figures he can get a hanger-on to do it. He was just a pretentious, condescending dooooooooosh to us and complained that we hadn't sold more or pushed the stuff he wanted to push (which he didn't tell us in advance). Acted like we were his servants rather than people doing him a favor. I also understand that it's customary for the artists to tip out a portion to the merch salespeople, but he gave us squat (other than crappy attitude).
Ahh, further proof that people with hyphenated names tend to be high maintenance.

Also, did you tell him there's only one L in Wilson?

That is :tinfoilhat: and 🫠 <--- The emoji description says that is a melting face, but it looks to me like the arms are in hugging position, so it is a hug. I have a sad anniversary on the 30th, and I looked to see what song is on my list, and I smiled a bit cause it's a weird one, but I love it in all it's weirdness, kinda like I did him. Anyway, I hope your heart is warm with loving memories of Michael today

*WTF the emoji didn't even show up after posting, at least not on my viewing monitor.

You'll be happy to know Marty Willson-Piper isn't in the band anymore. He was replaced by Ian Haug from Powderfinger in 2014.

The Church is one of the big reasons why Mrs. Eephus didn't submit a list. She saw them live last week and spent a few days beforehand listening to their music instead of prepping and was tired for a day or two after the show.

shuke:

Prisencolinensinainciusol - Adriano Celentano - Italian

Some info on this gem that otb is trying to steal from me:

The song is intended to sound to its Italian audience as if it is sung in English spoken with an American accent, however the lyrics are deliberately unintelligible gibberish with the exception of the words "all right". Andrew Khan, writing in The Guardian, describes the sound as reminiscent of Bob Dylan's output from the 1980s. Celentano's intention with the song was not to create a humorous novelty song but to explore communication barriers. The intent was to demonstrate how English sounds to people who do not understand the language proficiently. "Ever since I started singing, I was very influenced by American music and everything Americans did. So at a certain point, because I like American slang—which, for a singer, is much easier to sing than Italian—I thought that I would write a song which would only have as its theme the inability to communicate. And to do this, I had to write a song where the lyrics didn't mean anything."
Really liked this one - I dropped my only Italian artist off my list, which I since regretted.

krista4:

Wake Up – Arcade Fire (Canada)

My selection today is more "time and place" than it being my favorite song, or even my favorite Arcade Fire song. Lollapalooza, 2005, the first year it was held in Chicago instead of touring, and organizers had to be wondering why TF they would have this is Chicago in July. The heat and humidity were unbearable, with actual temps over 100 degrees and humidity >80%. Arcade Fire was one of the bands I was most excited to see, having, like everyone else, picked up Funeral a few months prior. In the midst of the heat index over 120, they took the stage...all wearing black suits and hats. I mean, full three-piece suits, shirts, hats. I didn't think they could survive. The played a monster set, never shedding a single item of clothing, and brought the house down. Certainly one of the most memorable performances I've ever seen.

The opened with this song and blew us all away from the first notes. While I think they have "better" songs, this is the one that instantly transports me to the feeling of awe I had at that moment .

It's my second such weird coincidence like that. The video montage that the funeral home put on it's website (with pictures we supplied) needed five songs to play while the video shows the pics, and one of those songs was "Vincent" by Don Mclean (his mom's choice) - as she felt a parallel with his life.

So last year for the one year anniversary we has a big luncheon for him in Watchung. The following day I was back in Asbury Park - and it was apparently much warmer than today because I had all my apartment windows open - and a car drives by blasting "Vincent" right outside my windows. I don't think anyone drives around with their car windows open blasting that song. It was a strange vibe indeed.

Maybe Michael was giving you a sign that he was with you at that moment. I believe some things like that are not coincidences, but signs from the spirit world. I could be wrong, but it is a nice thing to believe.

Love this song. Kids and I used to belt it out in the car when they were younger.

I'll +1 the love for Journey's "Lights," Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind," and The (English) Beat's "Save It for Later." I also was introduced to The Dead South in a thread here somewhere along the way and am looking forward to listening to more of their stuff.

Tons of songs I don't know on the playlist, which will be a recurring theme, so I'm firing it up earlier than usual to try to get through all of these today.

Why doesn't everybody have him on ignore just for scrolling purposes alone?
I don't have anyone on ignore, but I usually avoid GG. I clicked on the thread last night to see what Binky wrote, because his name was listed as last posted person. What I read is what probably got him banned. I wondered if Binky would get banned, and that GG is not worth getting banned over. I think GGs sexist woman hating talk is way worse than someone telling his narcissist *** to **** off.

titusbramble:

Routainen Maa - Heikki Mustonen (Finnish)

Note from titus: Included Youtube link as I do not know how well Spotify will pick up soundtracks to Finnish video games which are not yet out of early access on Steam

Raging weasel:

Strong Reflection – Mars Red Sky – France
These are two songs I did not know, that were really cool listens and fit well back to back as they both had an ethereal sound.

I knew 20 songs, or less than half of them. This is probably going to be par for the course, as there is a lot of territory I haven't explored in what's eligible for this one.

Known-to-me favorites from #31:

Open Letter (to a Landlord) -- Living Colour (Scorchy)
Beds Are Burning -- Midnight Oil (AAABatteries)
Wake Up -- Arcade Fire (Krista4)
The Chain -- Fleetwood Mac (Worrierking)
Save It for Later -- The Beat (Hov34)
Lights -- Journey (Hawks64)

I'm three for three so far on new-to-me songs getting a "Wow." As is tradition, the first new-to-me song that gets added to my new-to-me favorites playlist for the countdown gets to be the name of the playlist. For this countdown, the playlist is entitled "The Other Side Of Mt. Heart Attack." I've also added "Get Lucky" and "Para Lennon E McCartney" to the list so far. I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that Daft Punk song, but now I do!

All my best, Doc Oc and Simey. Late March is a bummer for our family as well with "sad anniversaries".

Anyone from a band named after a Neil Young song gets my approval.

I'll give you a topic - The Thompson Twins... None of them were named Thompson and none of them were twins...

Discuss!

It was also their opener when I saw them in NYC not long after Funeral came out. The show ended with David Byrne joining them to sing "This Must Be the Place."

Ha, typo. Those are the known-to-me favorites, of course. ETA: Consider this my clarification for @krista4 and @Dr. Octopus as well.
