Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

The Dreaded Marco:

Surprise Hotel - Fool's Gold
(new artist)

Bonus points for correct use of apostrophe, unlike the Stone Roses.
I hate to be a grammar guy but I think you’re incorrect here?

I apologize if I’m wrong or if I’ve missed your point. I’ve been drinking gin.

I'm trying to work through artist points again (I'm about 1/3 done) and just came across one of your picks where I think you might have been drinking gin. Both the artist and song names are wrong, which is not something you ever do!

The gold belongs to the fool, therefore apostrophe is needed. Probably best not to think too deeply about it.
Pretty sure that’s what I’m saying. I’m not thinking any more deeply than basic grammar. I’ll leave it at that. Enjoy your evening. 😀

I finished listening to the playlist and have some more new-to-me favorites:

Didn't quite make my playlist but I liked a lot: "Twin City Mini" by Fred Eaglesmith.
Big ol' heart: "Her and I" by King Gizzard etc. It's really hard to get past that title. Will be interested to hear more from this artist.
"Modern Drift" by Efterklang - my favorite of the day. The music makes me think a bit of Frightened Rabbit.

Actually didn't come across any today that I didn't at least like.

I get it now. The Stone Roses’ song, Fools Gold.

Good call. Apostrophe needed. 😂

Yes. I would have been clearer that it was a reference to the Brit countdown thread if I had known someone would be reading it with a brain full of gin.

It would have been helpful if you’d stated you were referring to a song by the Stone Rose’s called Fools Gold. 😜

Hmm...no response to the movie track. This could be a concern. :oldunsure:
I liked it, but what makes it a favorite for you?
I like a lot of Vangelis' work. The Chariots of Fire score has kind of been lost to time a bit and the main track is about all anyone ever heard from it anyway. Eric's Theme captures the aspirational spirt of the movie and, as a standalone, just soars.

I was going to choose the final track from the album but it's 20 minutes long. It was listening to that track that made me realize my own mortality - true story.

I like your answer even more than the song. My dad is also a fan of Eric's Theme.

New to me favs in playlist order
-Turn Off the Light (Nelly Furtado)
-the place I left behind(deep dark woods)
-Her And I (King Gizzard)
- Dancing In the Moonlight (Thin Lizzy)

Special mention to Don't Want To Fall in Love (Jane Child) I never heard of it or her but my wife was like "wow! Haven't heard this song in ages, used to love this when it came out."
Have a couple more that need a second listen

New-to-me favorites from #26:

Her & I (Slow Jam II) -- King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard (Landryshat). I've heard OF them -- how can you not with that name? -- but I'd never heard their music before. I got all like Pavlov's dog every time that guitar break came in.
Down Down -- Bachman-Turner Overdrive (Simsarge). MOAR COWBELL! Infectious album track I never came across before.
The Mob Rules -- Black Sabbath (jwb). I don't know a whole lot of Sabbath beyond the first three albums. Dio really elevates things here.
Left and Leaving -- The Weakerthans (Scorchy). Another band where I know the name but not the material. Meditative but never fails to hold interest.
You Don't Think You Like People Like Me -- Alex Lahey (Hov34). Incredibly catchy.
The Way -- Meshell Ndegeocello (Higgins). Holy funk!

Known favorites not already picked:
Pip’s Invitation: Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
Dr. Octopus: Keep The Car Running - Arcade Fire
worrierking: For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
Val Rannous: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
New Binky the Doormat: Breakfast In America – Supertramp
KarmaPolice: Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight) - Thin Lizzy

New to me favorites:
scorchy: Left And Leaving - The Weakerthans
The Dreaded Marco: Surprise Hotel - Fool's Gold
simey: The Place I Left Behind - The Deep Dark Woods
westerberg: Misread - Kings Of Convenience

I thought about a longer song from the Vangelis oeuvre but who wants to listen to a 20 minute song?... :oldunsure:
I do. I love Vangelis and his type who make compositions not 3-4 minute soundbites.
management is doing a bang up job despite being just as busy. And I dig the teasers a lot too.

Thanks. Working all freaking day today and will be tomorrow, too. I'd hoped to sneak over to Climate Pledge Arena to see the Iowa/Louisville women's game tomorrow night, but I don't see it happening. :topcat:
I am not sure how the schedule worked for the other 2 drafts, but can you take a day off doing this? You are not Bill Belichick. Allows people who need it to play catchup as well.
Hooray! Hooray! It's a Holi-Holiday - Is this a sing-a-long song?
Most definitely. Frank Farian loves singalongs. This band had loads. Ma Baker, Rasputin, Sunny, Daddy Cool etc

What if there's more than one fool?
Then the apostrophe would come after the 's'. Still gotta be one. But since it's a compound noun, the apostrophe comes after the 'l'.

So there.

Six-Point Selections:
Andy Dufresne:
1- Eric's Theme- Vangelis

Don Quixote:
2- Waterloo- ABBA (Sweden)

krista4:
3- Don’t Stop Me Now- Queen (UK/Zanzibar)

JMLs secret identity:
4- Butter- BTS (South Korea)

John Maddens Lunchbox:
5- Hooray! Hooray! It's A Holi-Holiday- Boney M. (Monserrat)
(note to @Ilov80s , this artist was previously selected, but the name was misspelled and I didn't notice until now, not being a Boney M. expert and all. I've used the corrected name here, which should have an "e" in "Boney" and a period after the "M")

Doug B:
6- Tarzan Boy- Baltimora

1- I love Vangelis and hes not even in my top 10 synth/electronic artists. This song is one of his more rousing. As i mentioned in the 1977 rundown, he was a seasoned pro at this game after being Aphrodites child in the 60s before finding his oeuvre doing this kind of ****. For a man with his volume of work there are few clunkers.

2- I am really not sure if Abba are still underrated. Their music was incredible. Even going through some of their albums you find gems that would have been hits if they didnt already have 3 songs from the album charting. The US missed out on most of the Abba phenomenon with “only” 14 of their songs making the top 40. The UK had 27. Between 1975 and 1980 they had 15 consecutive top 5 hits there, including 8 number 1s. Ironically one of their best songs, Lay All Your Love On Me only got to 7 and spoiled the run. They were so popular the double A side of Eagle/Thank you for the Music charted at #33 during this time on imports alone.

3- Don’t Stop Me Now is such a great track. Oddly enough I didn’t discover it until 2005. For some reason it did not make the top 50 in either the US or Australia. I dont recall it being on the radio and it wasnt on Queens Greatest Hits like it was in the UK. They had a different version of Greatest Hits in just about every country. I am living in the UK in 2005 and this coworker and i were talking about how much we love Queen. She mentions the Mr Fahrenheit song and I am flabbergasted. No idea what shes talking about. She plays it.....where has this song been for the last 27 years of my life? We played it 10 times in a row. Such a blast to hear it now.

4- I should have ranked this lower. Just not my jam at all. Fidelity, Sunshine Day and Something all are better than it. Good luck to them though. I will let the younger folk enjoy them

5- Guess I will have to be the resident Boney M expert then. Frank Farian, of Milli Vanilli infamy did the same thing here. He basically had 3 pretty faces supporting an actual singer and pretty face while we are at it in Liz Mitchell. Farian sung all the male parts while letting the “Dancer” mime his vocals. Although he did let him sing live. Like with Abba, the US missed out on the enormous impact Boney M had at the time internationally. Hooray its a holi holiday is one of their latter hits and very popular in the school yard before school holidays. I had a tough time choosing and probably changed the song about 7 times for Boney M. Happy with this choice though.

6- Baltimora was such an unusual artist that popped up out of nowhere and went back their straight after. My knowledge had the singer as Irish, which is actually true but Baltimora was a band with an Italian guy composing the song. Sadly the singer with the Italian name of Jimmy McShane died of Aids in 1995. I actually had this cued up in my 12” vinyl pile to play this morning anyway.

I'm a huge Rush fan (way too many concerts to count, etc.) but at the same time I completely understand that they're not for everyone. I'm sure I've posted this a million times on this forum but I love the hell out of this version of Subdivision by Jacob Moon. I watch that and I think "yeah, this guy gets it." My wife was born in Hamilton Ontario. I was playing this on our TV in our living room, wifey walks by and says "hmmm, that looks a lot like where I grew up. . . (double take). . . wait. . . hey, that is Hamilton. . . I know right where that is. . . holy crap. . .isn't that that one Rush song?" :)

Dude, that's awesome, really enjoyed it! But where the heck were you when I was digging for a cool Rush cover for "Sneak Some Rush Into Their Lives Day"???

Good call. Apostrophe needed. 😂
A high class debate here : a Princeton grad versus a doctor.

Neither of which in and of itself qualifies you to be a grammar expert.

Catching up from yesterday. Less songs than usual but I think it's b/c of the circumstances - instead of listening while walking the dogs and using the elliptical, I had it playing on the way to and from Dulles airport to pick up my kid. Never a fun drive, but made a lot worse by traffic on the way down and fog/rain on the way back. This middle-aged dummy already can't see for #### after dark, so I'm afraid a lot of the songs just rolled by. Will have to revisit.

Known Favorites

Subdivisions - Rush (shuke)
Don't Wanna Fall In Love - Jane Child (Sullie) - this one is holding a spot in an upcoming 1990 countdown. Loved the song, and also Jane's nose ring-to-earring chain.
Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Val Rannous)
Estranged - Guns N' Roses (Manster) - seriously, what was up with the dolphins in this video? From what I understand, Axl can't even blame cocaine.
California Dreamin' - The Mamas & The Papas (AAA Batteries)
For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield (worrierking) - Like krista, I didn't realize I knew this song from the title, but then had an "oh yeah" moment. This had to be on Freedom Rock, right?

New to Me Favorites

Surprise Hotel - Fool's Gold (The Dreaded Marco)
Dreamer - Lucifer (Raging weasel)
The Place I Left Behind - The Deep Dark Woods (simey)
Modern Drift - Efterklang (Eephus)
You Don't Think You Like People Like Me - Alex Lahey (Hov34)

This Mob Rules track is fun. I'm not a big fan of Sabbath nor hair metal, but this is like a well built bridge between the two incorporating what I like from each. Dio's voice blends well with this much more guitar driven track. Never thought a Sabbath song besides War Pigs would get a heart, but here we are.

Sebastian Bach had extraordinary range.

If Call Me is the beginning of the 80's rock scene, Heart of Glass is the apex of the disco scene - it's an all time great song. Blondie is a very consequential band.

Those are the two best Talking Heads songs.

IIRC, the sounds of "amorous relations" heard in Rocket Queen are an actual recording of one of the band members and someone likely NOT their soul mate.

Zamboni with a movie score! :hifive:

Know 21 from today's picks although a couple just from this draft.
Once again my pick by Candlemass isn't my favorite by them but I've drafted several of my favs in previous drafts and wanted to change it up. Solitude is the first track off their first album- Doomicus Metallicus- from which Doom Metal gets it's name.
