The 7s playlist

G n' R selection came down to only two for me: "Estranged" or "Mr. B'stone" ... let's just say the deciding factor were tons more experience with blow than with dolphins.

all life's choices should be so easy, eh?

(but cotdamn is 'Estranged' epic, sooo much more so than one we'll see later on, i'm sure - and i'll just say it now - that tune? THUMPER!)

Sebastian Bach had extraordinary range.
I never knew he was born in the Bahamas - thought he was Canadian through and through. His brother Zac (Bierk) was a one-time NHL goalie.
I never saw Skid Row live, but I did see these girls and guys he left to join Skid Row.
And of course, there was another different Skid Row with the aforementioned Gary Moore and Phil Lynott before they formed Thin Lizzy. Not eligible here, so no risk of spotlighting.

Pip’s Invitation:

1901 - Phoenix (France)
(new song)

Andy Dufresne:

Twilight Zone - Golden Earring
(new artist)
I’ve liked both Phoenix songs so far - I’ll need to check them out more.

Twilight Zone, while straightforward just sounded and seemed so different than most of MTV. I’m sure we’ll see the song again and perhaps a different song by the band as well.

For sure on both. Just glad Andy made sure to grab the extended version with the bass/guitar solos, and not the neutered short version that had been played on MTV and top 40 radio.

Twighligh Zone - Golden Earring
Soundad and seemed so different than most of MTV.

it were those gravel ripped vocals for me - kid sounded like he just stumbled into the studio after a year straight of Pall Malls & Inositol laced Koke & Old Grand Dad (wait - that was actually me, tho)

let's face it, the vocal stylings of LeBon, O'Dowd, MJ were not exactly "BUTCH" ... NTTAWWT.

My top 5 from the 7 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. AAABatteries: Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
  2. Andy Dufresne: Twilight Zone - Golden Earring
  3. Sullie: Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider
  4. MAC_32: Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace
  5. ditkaburgers: And She Was - Talking Heads
This round is a big leap forward from the past few for my taste. It was actually tough to narrow down to a top 5. Very strong round.

This Mob Rules track is fun. I'm not a big fan of Sabbath nor hair metal, but this is like a well built bridge between the two incorporating what I like from each. Dio's voice blends well with this much more guitar driven track. Never thought a Sabbath song besides War Pigs would get a heart, but here we are.

I was just coming of age when Dio replaced Ozzy, and I more remember Dio as a solo artist, but once I was into him (real fast - what a voice) I looked back at his previous work (Rainbow, Sabbath), and right away, Mob Rules jumped right out. I especially like the Live Evil version, which kicks in right after Iron Man (which he does justice to - I mean, it's Ronnie). Not many people can replace Ozzy (who I love too), but Dio was the perfect guy.

New to me favs in playlist order
-After Dark (Tito and Tarantula)
- I Wanna Destroy You ( The Soft Boys)
- Tarhatazed (Mdou Moctar) liked all I've heard from this guy so far- need to check out more!
Oblivion ( Yuri Gagarin) this is awesome, right up my alley. Will definitely explore more!
- Know Your Product ( The Saints) punk attitude with horns!? It works!

Recognized 3 more songs after hearing so Walking With a Ghost gets a like as well
Probably the strongest list yet as to be expected.

Which artists haven't we seen yet that you expect to do very well? Scanning the ***OFFICIAL*** contest entries, Van Halen is definitely one of them. Maybe Santana, too. Others?

I saw Skid Row twice - once opening for Aerosmith and then GnR. Never saw Madam X nor the band Sebastian joined after leaving Skid Row (with Kelly Deal and Jimmy Chamberlin).
Skid Row just played one of the Detroit casinos a couple weeks ago. I think I saw them open for Bon Jovi

The known-to-me favorites list is teeming today. Thinking about it, my criteria is whether I would change the channel on Sirius in search of something different (not necessarily better). The 7-pointers would keep my hands on the steering wheel.

Known Favorites

Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills & Nash (timscochet) - hey, I've actually heard this before, but only b/c a girl I liked put it on mixtape for me (next to Jigsaw by Marillion). Interesting choices for a high-schooler.
1901 - Phoenix (Pip’s Invitation)
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring (Andy Dufresne)
Girls Got Rhythm - AC/DC (Dr. Octopus)
Jet City Woman - Queensryche (Val Rannous)
I Wanna Destroy You - The Soft Boys (krista4) - psychedelic post-punk. I ♥️ Robyn Hitchcock.
Mr. Brownstone - Guns N' Roses (otb_lifer)
Heart Of Glass - Blondie (simey)
Walking With A Ghost - Tegan And Sara (rockaction) - never paid much attention to them till Tegan did a duet with Against Me! Then I fell for hard - lots of great songs (including this one, obvs)
Jailbreak - AC/DC (Manster) - Man, these two picks make me wonder why the radio focuses so much on the same 5-6 AC/DC songs.
And She Was - Talking Heads (ditkaburgers)
La Di Da Di - Doug E. Fresh (Doug B) - "Don't cry, dry...your....eye...." Who would have guessed the A-side and B-side from the same Doug E Fresh single would both make appearances?
Rocket Queen - Guns N' Roses (westerberg)
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads (AAA Batteries)

New to Me Favorites:

Put Me To Sleep - Porcelain Raft (The Dreaded Marco)
Nature Boy - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Mister CIA)
Know Your Product - The Saints (Oliver Humanzee)

Or was it this one I had at #45?

Sullie:

Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider (Tom Cochrane is from America's hat.)
(duplicate, second vote)
Very underrated song.

simey:

Heart Of Glass - Blondie (USA, England)
(new song)
My 1B to Call Me. It was tough choosing between the two.

ditkaburgers:

And She Was - Talking Heads
(new song)
Nice to see this get a vote!

Chaos34:

Be Good Johnny - Men At Work

Nice! This made my first cut

Great song. Sure to get more votes!

Air Supply :headbang:

ETA: they just missed for me actually
There are a couple of their songs that I remember liking back in the early 80s. I haven't heard them in decades. I'm gonna have to go to Spotify now and listen to a song or two.

Sweet Dreams is one I’ve always liked and almost made the cut.
That's a good one. I looked and there are like three others I like too. Does that make me an Air Supply fan?

My favorite part is at the 5:07 mark when that buildup starts and ends with the drums.

They were actually a bit funky when they first started:

hey, not sure everyone saw it ...or listened to it

Elvis Costello's 2018 "Look Now" is just a wonderful bring back from Elvis after he decided to stop recording a number of years earlier

this is a song that is from a movie back in the 90's that is loosely based on Carole King (who is magnificent)

it was hard deciding which song from this album to pick ...it's beautiful

Burt Bacharach, Carole King, I'm an album lady - that's how I was raised

I see what you did there (I think anyway). Did you see her Broadway show Beautiful - it was outstanding.

If it already hasn't been used in a crime/spy movie, it definitely should.

The video was kind of in that realm, but like many of the day, was pretty ridiculous.
