Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

Oliver Humanzee:

Dead Sun Rising - Zeni Geva
(new artist)
I was wondering how Gary Numan made the countdown while listening, but it seems as if it was an error. "Dead Sun Rising" by Gary Numan is on the playlist.

oh, man ... that one are nasty

i mean, they're no G.I.S.M., but that ish is filthy good 🤘

I had a feeling you might like that one. You and OH share a lot of similar tastes, and similarly strong opinions about them, too. :)

Are you able to tag Hawks64? For some reason I can't tag right now.
Weird - I just tried and it didn't work either.

I'll PM him.
I got it to work in a new post.

haven't watched the Sopranos, Mad Men, The Wire or Community either.
3 out of the 4 are amazing. I'm only a few episodes in on Season 2 of The Wire, though.
Community is well loved but I thought every character was completely annoying and I cringe watching Joel McHale in anything.

agreed - though I really enjoyed Senor Chang.

so Pip - I think this has come up before so sorry if we have been over this but is there a particular reason for not having checked these shows out?
I watched the British Office and loved it and never felt the need to check out a "copy". I realize it evolved into more than that, but I had other priorities.

Community always ran opposite The Big Bang Theory, which my wife and I watched (along with our son once he was old enough to figure out was going on). And there were a lot of obnoxious Community fans online that turned me off to the idea.

The early '00s were my Lost Years and I wasn't home much and didn't have a DVR. In the early '10s I was dealing with having a young child. So I missed a lot of the "peak TV" series that were on then. I watched Breaking Bad on Netflix after the fact (and now I'm watching it with my wife as she views it for the first time). The first "prestige" show I found time to watch as it aired from start to finish was probably Better Call Saul.

Since 2016 or so most of my TV energies have been devoted to Survivor. I do the discussion groups and the podcasts and such in addition to watching the broadcast every week. Most of our "live TV" watching is stuff for the whole family -- game shows, cooking competitions, Disney stuff, etc.

So basically the answer is "I've spent my time doing other things."

similarly on the Saints selection yesterday ... there are a lower hangin' piece of fruit that is regarded as their hallmark tune (and one that just sounds so impossibly chaotic, like recorded in a wind tunnel with the guitars blaring thru jet powered fans before being buffeted thru cracked amp tubes), but "Know Your Product" was a very inspired choice in lieu of said hallmark one ... the bouncy/brassy texture subtracts nada from their urgency ... fantastic piece of work, that.

Well the first three could be not having HBO.
I did have HBO in my early-00s apartment but wasn't at home enough to keep up with long-form series without a DVR. I did catch most of Six Feet Under, which I loved. (And made up the episodes I missed via Netflix DVDs when that was a thing.) I did not have HBO when I lived in Northwest Jersey in the late 00s/early 10s. We have had HBO for some of the time we've been in South Jersey (since 2013) -- where I watched True Blood because my wife liked it until it got ridiculous. These days we don't have HBO on our cable package but I have an HBO Max subscription through my cell phone provider. Which is how I watch White Lotus.

It hasn't born itself out yet, but I realized when submitting this to Krista that Stressed MAC played a role in the preparation of this batch of 31.

Animal I Have BecomeThree Days GraceI thought canadians were supposed to be nice
One ThingFinger ElevenOnly slightly nicer

Are they good songs? Of course. Top 31? Maybe a stretch, but not in my state of mind the last several weeks  And what prompted this post? I Saw Her Again came on and it reminded me that this is a song October me would have loved to sing & chair dance to, but it lacks violence so **skip**

Seems like a limited tour on his website - hope he expands the cities. I go where patron saint of yacht rock Steve Lukather goes.

Steve Lukather was fantastic when I saw him with the All-Starr Band last year. Everyone was.

Ringo's tour dates have been wacky. He had Seattle at a venue TBD on there for a while, then it disappeared entirely. Then today it's back but in Woodinville. I noticed a couple of others that were on and off, too.

I'm sure he'll expand but is probably playing it safe and leaving dates for re-scheduling in case they have to shut down again as they did twice on the last tour when Ringo got COVID.

hopefully there'll be an appearance from the rock n' roll vagabond himself, the incomparable Ian Hunter (soon to be 84!)

bless his soul, he's been grinding it out for so long - one of my heroes, no question.

Ringo just guested on Ian's latest, along with ol' TP sidekick Mike Campbell.

ya never know ...

New-to-me favorites from #24:

Space to Bakersfield -- Black Mountain (Shuke). Holy space 🎸. Out there and stimulating.
Whatever, Wherever -- Shakira (DrIanMalcolm). As I am not current on TV, nor am I current on pop music. This was insanely catchy, bumpin' and fun.
As Soon As The Good Times Roll -- Scorpions (Zamboni). More intricate than their radio songs. I dig.
Yuve Yuve Yu -- The HU (Val Rannous). What a ride this was -- even though I have no idea what they're saying.
Atomic Bomb -- William Onyeabor (JMLs Secret Identity). This guy has been the find of the draft for me so far, along with Mdou Moctar.

That would be so cool!

So are the Gibson Brothers a Caribbean island rendition of the Village People?
Funny you should say that. I can see this song morphing into Macho Man very easily.
No idea of their sexuality. Pretty sure they migrated to France as little kids during the great Carribean exodus. They did have 4 top 12 hits in the UK, with this being their highest.
I will have more later.

Yuve Yuve Yu -- The HU (Val Rannous). What a ride this was -- even though I have no idea what they're saying.

Glad you enjoyed it! I've been waiting for this one to come up, if for no other reason that it's cool and most people will have never heard it. I never thought I would like a song with Mongolian throat singing (!), but this was quite the revelation when I first heard it. Not only do these guys seriously rock, they've won an award in their home country for promoting Mongolian culture. If you're interested in knowing what the heck they're talking about, the YouTube video for the song has an English translation when you use the Closed Captioning button. Apparently it's all about "How Strange" (Yuve Yu) things are, with the modern world's distractions pulling them away from the land and the culture of their ancestors:

(Note that this is not the only non-English language song on my list, there's at least one more coming that A: Rocks!!, and B: will need YouTube Closed Captioning assistance for most of us.)

I'm behind as work has been a bee-yatch, including all weekend, but I just finished listening to the 7s playlist from yesterday. Ehhhhhh, this was my least favorite list by far, so Thumper. I did have one new-to-me that I enjoyed a lot - "Werente Serigne" by Orchestra Baobab.

My top 5 from the 8 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. Sullie: Radar Love - Golden Earring
  2. MAC_32: One Thing - Finger Eleven
  3. jwb: And the Cradle Will Rock - Van Halen
  4. AAABatteries: Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp
  5. Andy Dufresne: It Can Happen - Yes
Awesome round, best yet IMO. I love every one of these songs.

Yuve Yuve Yu -- The HU (Val Rannous). What a ride this was -- even though I have no idea what they're saying.

This takes me back to college. We were poor SOB's! We lived near the public library, so we would go check out books, and media often. I had a roommate who found a Tuvan CD and played the **** out of it, on high volume in the living room! We had some pretty good speakers actually! Good times....

As Soon As The Good Times Roll -- Scorpions (Zamboni). More intricate than their radio songs. I dig.
Glad you liked this. For the Scorps, I was vacillating among “The Zoo” (selected earlier), a few from the early (Uli Roth) days, one from Blackout, and this deeper track. Wore Love At First Sting out in HS and have rediscovered it recently, so went with this one.

Also, look at me, I finally made Pip’s list!

Surprisingly, I’m part of the Ace Award runner-up. No “Born to Be Wild” or “The Pusher” or what-have-you. Just a high-tempo, grooving song about a new stereo system… reportedly.

It wasn’t planned in the least, but there’s definitely a traveling theme to my “didn’t know” list today, with three of them featuring cities.

#24s
Recognized by title alone: 18
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown: 1
Didn't know: 20

Special Shout-Out: All Through The Night (timschochet). Me highlighting this at all feels like cheating, considering I ranked the regular (/non-Shaggy) version high in my (late-and-rushed) US list. Still, there’s no denying that this is an entirely different take on it.

Selected Favorites:
Some Like It Hot (Dr. Octopus)
White Horse (scorchy) -Flashback time! Though I don’t know if I could’ve ever named who did this song.
Leave It (Doug B)
These Are Days (higgins)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Space to Bakersfield (shuke)
Buffalo (The Dreaded Marco)
Dust (Raging weasel)
Kansas City (krista4)

Dig The Vibe: Yuve Yuve Hu (Val Rannous) - Gotta love some Tuvan throat singing! I can’t be sure, but there’s a non-zero chance I’ve listened to this before.

@ditkaburgers:

Upside Down - A*Teens
(new artist)

A*Teens were a Swedish Teen Pop group from the turn of the century. They made their mark with an album of ABBA covers hence the A* in their name. The covers stuck pretty close to the original and exposed a new generation to the joys of ABBA. "Upside Down" was their first original single and doesn't stray far from their formula.

ditkaburgers remembers them getting a lot of airplay on Radio Disney and says hearing it today takes her back to grade school, which isn't a big stretch geographically because she works in the same campus today.

Eephus:

Simone & Perry - Grant McLennan
(new artist)

I adore The Go-Betweens, Brisbane's favorite sons and daughters. One of my toughest decisions when putting together my list was whether to choose something by the band or one of Grant's or Robert's solo recordings. I went with "Simone & Perry" because it's one of the loveliest, most melodic numbers by the more melodic half of the Go-Betweens' great songwriting duo. McLennan's Horsebreaker Star is one of my favorite albums and it's stashed on several of my desert islands I've acquired on this board.

Eight-Point Selections:

timschochet:

1-All Through The Night - Cyndi Lauper and Shaggy

DrIanMalcolm:

2-Whatever, Wherever - Shakira (Colombia)
(new song))

Hawks64:

3-Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
(new song)

titusbramble:

4-Hate You - 2NE1 (Korean)
(new artist)

JMLs secret identity:

5-Atomic Bomb - Wiliam Onyeabor (Nigeria)
(new song)
John Maddens Lunchbox:
6-
Que Sera Mi Vida - Gibson Brothers (Martinique)
(new artist

ditkaburgers:

7- Upside Down - A*Teens
(new artist)
Zegras11:

8-Everything She Does Is Magic - The Police
(new song)
AAABatteries:

9- Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp
(new song)
1- Amazing to think Lauper recorded this great song with Shaggy. Fantastic find. Wish i had the imagination to find stuff like this. Well i did, but i could have done better. Not sure Shaggy adds anything here, but its a great way to get the song here.

2-in doing my research for this although Shakira was born in Columbia, she is of Lebanese heritage. Curious how many times she pops up and how many people select her with how many different songs.

3- Half of Australias music icons in the 70s and 80s were not born in Australia, which makes it kinda ironic that the Flea loophole gets the Chili Peppers in. Californication is just one of their many great numbers. Curious to see how many different songs we see

4- I like this so much better than the South Korean song I chose. Not sure why, but female korean artists are so much more interesting than ****ing BTS. Im very partial to korean females for some reasons anyway, but thats another story. Now im checking though their catalog, they have a few pretty good songs. Too late to swap BTS out lol? Great pick

5- Special shout out to Don Quixote for the William Onyeabor assist. He did the same for the 1977 draft, but Atomic Bomb is so much more my style. Love it.

6- Que Sera Mi Vida is no doubt the second most played song during the research for me. The original film clip fascinates me. From the bright spacesuits, to the goofy mannerisms of the drummer and the weird grunting vocals of the lead singer. This song is an excellent argument as to why you start a song with the chorus, especially when the growling starts in the verse. Oddly enough they did this version almost 40 years later on dutch? TV and the vocals are so much better. Im guessing the young dude is one of their sons. Such a fun song and the end of my carribean disco run. Sadly the goofy drummer died a few years back of covid

7- Love seeing artists like the A Teens here. Lots of **** rock elsewhere and im clearly going through a phase of happy pop music. Im sure depression is around the corner and back to the moaning guys again

8- I dont think weve seen Roxanne yet although i stand to be corrected. If i had to guess most used artist so far, the Police wouldnt have been top 10. Guess we see how things shake out. Good to see they have excellent standing 40 years later despite Stings efforts to be as pretentious as possible

9- Supertramp has always been a fascinating artist for me. They are literally the only artist i bought a greatest hits of and i thought it was so bad i onsold it straight away. Got a copy of Breakfast in America on vinyl and I damn love it. What gives? Might be the 35 years in between. Always one of the more interesting US artists fir me. Must be the british influence lol

Interesting that you think of them as a US artist. They were 4/5 British and were based in Britain during the first half of their run, relocating to Los Angeles in 1977. I always thought of them as a British band.

Same - in fact, so British that I didn't even think of them for this catchall countdown.

10 known favorites from the 8 pointes, excluding past selections.

Radar Love - Great drivin' song. :drive:
Simone and Perry - Love this album.
Tusk 🥁
Californication
Hallelujah - 🙌
Goodbye Stranger
Low Rider - 🎲 <--- fuzzy dice on the dashboard
As Soon as the Good Times Roll
These Are The Days
Who Can it Be Now 🎷

*And The Cradle Will Rock - This was on my last 5 out list. I love the intro starting with that electric piano. I also dig the guitar solo, DLR's screams and the song in general. Rock On!

Underwhelmed - I think I've heard this before from NV.

On the Breakfast in America album there were three Brits, one American, and one Scottish member. On the back of the BIA album cover they are sitting at a diner counter, and each member is holding up a newspaper from their hometown. Anyway, I consider them more British, too.

I never picked up on that - very cool. I really miss album cover art.

Me too.

You all might enjoy MusicBrainz.com. Just stumbled on it this morning looking for the Breakfast In America back cover art. At first blush, this site looks like a good place to revel in nostalgic album cover art and liner notes.

I have just started looking around on that site a bit to get a feel for how comprehensive the cover-art availability actually is. The search bar is at top right, and you can search by a whole bunch of different aspects -- searches by Release (e.g. the album Diamond Dogs or the single "Rebel Rebel") and by Artist (e.g. David Bowie) seem the most intuitive and useful.

Wish I would have found this earlier, back when we were looking for liner notes and such to establish band membership :D

EDIT: Oooh -- there's all kinds of good stuff on MusicBrainz. Want to know who engineered the tracks on Quiet Riot's Metal Health? Or who hold the Japanese copyright? Look no further.
