Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

I've had no time to prepare tomorrow's list, and given how long it takes for them it could be late morning PDT before I can post tomorrow.

Sorry, but for the first time in middle-aged dummy history, I’m going to skip a day. Just too busy to get this up for several more hours, and I don’t want to put it up late in the day and not give enough time before the next one. I’ll be back with it tomorrow.

@Don Quixote Sunday I finished Daisy Jones and the Six. I liked it. I didn't read the book, so I don't know how closely it follows the story. I liked the 70s music and clothes, and while the story could occasionally be predictable, it was an easy enjoyable watch. I was a 70s kid, so I love a lot of things from that era. The main characters' (Billy and Daisy) voices sounded really good together, and the original music wasn't bad at all. They did all of their own singing. The actress who plays Daisy (Riley) is Lisa Marie Presley's oldest daughter, and sometimes you can see her mother (and grandmother) in her face on some of her expressions.

Nice, I came down with a flu yesterday and haven't even gotten to yesterday's playlist

I’m a couple of episodes into it. Enjoying it so far. Some tonal shifts from the book; I assume intended to make it a bit lighter and more easy watch (not that the book is all that heavy, as pretty light read — but seemed to make it ever lighter for TV).

For example, in the show, guitarist left band to pursue becoming a dentist. In the book, he got drafted and died shortly thereafter in Vietnam, and he was more of an inspiration for the band.

Good luck getting your work done. I still need to catch up on playlists.

9- Supertramp has always been a fascinating artist for me. They are literally the only artist i bought a greatest hits of and i thought it was so bad i onsold it straight away. Got a copy of Breakfast in America on vinyl and I damn love it. What gives? Might be the 35 years in between. Always one of the more interesting US artists fir me. Must be the british influence lol
Interesting that you think of them as a US artist. They were 4/5 British and were based in Britain during the first half of their run, relocating to Los Angeles in 1977. I always thought of them as a British band.
On the Breakfast in America album there were three Brits, one American, and one Scottish member. On the back of the BIA album cover they are sitting at a diner counter, and each member is holding up a newspaper from their hometown. Anyway, I consider them more British, too.
I presume the guy named “Dougie” is the Scot?

My son’s birthday was on Sunday, and had a busy weekend getting ready for that. So, will try to use today to catch up on what I’ve missed.

Sharing a bit about my picks the past couple of days (both Brazil — sorry, not sorry).

Será - Legião Urbana (Brazil)

Legião Urbana may be something like the Brazilian equivalent of The Smiths (hopefully a more favorable comparison than Montgomery Burns’ non-Union Mexican equivalent of Stephen Spielberg). Both were formed in 1982 and popular with the college set. This one is a bit poppier than some of their other stuff.

Baby - Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso (Brazil)
This one marks the first appearance of artists featured in the album cover in my avatar (this song was also first released on that album). Gal Costa just passed away last year; she had a great voice, and love the way it just glides over the violins here.

Caetano Veloso has had an interesting and remarkable career. He is one of the central figures of the Brazilian Tropicalia movement, which combined Brazilian music with rock and roll and psychedelia (movement got its name from one of his songs). This album was released in 1968. By the end of the year, he was under arrest and subsequently was exiled from Brazil (along with another artist) because the Brazilian military dictatorship considered him and his music a threat.

Screw it, I found a window. I’ll have it up by 11 PDT.

I think Neil Young doubling up is not a surprise, but raise your hand if you predicted that The Very Best and Gordon Lightfoot would double-up today, and Alanis Morissette would TRIPLE-up, including a Deja Vote?

Also, props to @Hawks64 for being the only one of the three who spelled her last name correctly. I wouldn't have gotten it right either without looking it up.

After The Gold Rush - Neil Young
(new song)

What I said in my Neil countdown:

16. After the Gold Rush (After the Gold Rush, 1970)
One of Neil's most-beloved songs, the title track of After the Gold Rush is one of the few remnants of Neil's original concept for the album. Dean Stockwell showed Neil a script he had written about California being wiped out by a flood and Neil agreed to provide a soundtrack for it. He wrote a few songs, including this one, with the script in mind before changing direction. (The movie was never made; L.A., which ended up on Time Fades Away, seems to be about the same thing.) Neil being Neil, he told Dolly Parton in 1989 that he couldn't remember what it was about and that each verse must have been "based on whatever I was taking at the time." And more recently, he has said it's an environmental anthem.
It is all of those things. The imagery is so vivid and the tune so compelling that the song has become a lot of things to a lot of people. Even a simple celebration to the intoxicated folks who go crazy when Neil sings "and I felt like getting high" in concert.
The studio version, a piano arrangement with a french horn solo and Neil singing in a high register, is gripping, but the song has become even more resonant in concert over the years. There's a sadness tinging Neil's voice when he sings it these days. You can't go wrong with any incarnation of this, but my favorites are from the 1999 solo tour, in which he started out on piano and, in the middle of song while playing the french horn solo on harmonica, transitioned to pump organ.
It's fun how the lyrics have evolved live. "Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970s" turned into "in the 1980s," then "in the 20th century" and now "in the 21st century."

Pip’s Invitation:

Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac (US/UK)
(new song)

My #1 Fleetwood Mac song changes frequently, but it was this one on the day I made my list. I felt that I should have something from Rumours, an album whose cultural impact has been tremendous. Gold Dust Woman, the album's closer*, has a haunting arrangement with unusual instrumentation (including electric harpsichord and broken glass) that perfectly complements an anguished vocal from Stevie Nicks. The song more than any other from the record conveys the chaos that was going on in the band members' lives during the recording, and refers to cocaine use, romantic problems and other drama.

* - recent editions of Rumours have added Silver Spring, which was unjustly left off the album (and relegated to Go Your Own Way's B-side), either as the last track or in Songbird's spot, bumping Songbird to the last track. Silver Spring was also in contention for my Mac entry.

You Shook Me is to AC/DC as PSSOM is to Def Leppard.

Great songs - and I really mean that - but MAN are they played too often.

I guess what I need to do is make a conscious effort to not listen to the radio.

This is Mrs. MAC's favorite by country miles. She gets a kick out of playing the role of Stevie whenever this song is on and we're in the same space.

I think this took longer to write than Canned Heat had its time in the spotlight.

Dammit. You are right. Total brain fart. They were more successful in the US than the UK and i dont know the band well enough to have heard them speak. Just to me their music is more US centric, but if im the outlier on that opinion, so be it.
You would think with the amount if practice ive had in being wrong, that id be more careful lol

No American would have a singing voice like Roger Hodgson's. Not on purpose, anyway.

23 songs that I know today (including repeats), the most so far.

Known-to-me favorites from #23, not including my own or Could You Be Loved (WHICH I OWN! STOP TRYING TO STEAL IT FROM ME!)

After the Gold Rush -- Neil Young (Zegras11)
Cinnamon Girl -- Neil Young (Manster)
Southern Cross -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (Worrierking) -- Worrierking continues to pick "high similarity score" songs
Save It for Later -- The Beat (Doc Oc)
Eyes Of A Stranger -- Payola$ (Zamboni) -- I had no idea what the name of this band was, nor that they were Canadian. I just remember the song on FM radio in the '80s. Were they a true one-hit wonder? The Sniff 'N the Tears of Canada?
Going Up the Country -- Canned Heat (Simsarge)
Screaming in the Night -- Krokus (Raging Weasel)
Sundown -- Gordon Lightfoot (Landryshat)
You Shook Me All Night Long -- AC/DC (Chaos34)
Going Down -- The Jeff Beck Group (Binky)
Sing Me Spanish Techno -- The New Pornographers (Simey)
One Week -- Barenaked Ladies (Mrs. Rannous)
Ai Du -- Ali Farka Toure (feat. Ry Cooder) (Krista4)

Eyes Of A Stranger -- Payola$ (Zamboni) -- I had no idea what the name of this band was, nor that they were Canadian. I just remember the song on FM radio in the '80s. Were they a true one-hit wonder? The Sniff 'N the Tears of Canada?
I don’t think you could call them even a one-hit wonder, as IIRC this never charted in the US (did in Canada though).

Got most of its prominence from being in the movie Valley Girl - really good flick, even better soundtrack.

That would be why it was on the radio, then. I was using the word "hit" figuratively, as FM radio play didn't always correlate to chart success.

I did see Valley Girl once, very long ago, and I don't remember what songs were in it.

****Announce****** If you want a copy of any of the US or British Isles playlists, please copy into your own playlist. I will be deleting them on 4/1/23..not an April Fool's. I need to get my Spotify under control :lmao:

If anyone copies any of the playlists, could you send me links? I'll replace the links in those two threads so that they don't go dead.

Don Quixote:

Gostava Tanto De Você - Tim Maia (Brazil)
(new artist)

Alright, my list is in Brazil for a third straight day. Maybe I was wishing I was on my way to Carnival when I was putting my list together.

Tim Maia associated with samba rock — a combo of Brazilian samba with American soul and funk. Makes me wish I was sitting outside and grooving along with a caipirinha.

rockaction:

Through The Roof 'N' Underground - Gogol Bordello (U.S. and Russia)
(new artist)

The Slavic version of MAC's Irish songs?

It's funny. I didn't even see what you quoted but saw what you wrote and knew it had to be Gogol Bordello so I scrolled back up to be sure.

Yeah, it's pretty ethnic sounding.

eta* Brooklyn and Russia, I believe. Lots of weird back story from what I can ascertain.
