Hawks64:

Twilight Hotel - Quiet Riot
(new song)

Is Quiet Riot the John Mayer of the not-strictly-US-or-UK world?

Mayer wears a macrame schmatta on his dome?
And rocks the extensions

ooofffahhh ... exactly 😅

i'd bet green frickin' USofA currency that him & Blackmore both visted ol' Sy Sperling, and opted for the "what the eff ever" helmet.
Or your boy Morrie

Twilight Hotel - Quiet Riot
(new song)

Is Quiet Riot the John Mayer of the not-strictly-US-or-UK world?
No. No they are not. I do have a weird affinity for the QR III album though, maybe it was the height of DuBrow, not sure but if I want to listen to some QR it's this ablum.
ETA everyone should know who the John Mayer of the World is for me by this point :lmao:

I knew 20 of today's songs not counting my own but including repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #21:

When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around -- The Police (jwb)
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey -- Paul and Linda McCartney (Simey)
Radar Love -- Golden Earring (Val Rannous)
I'll Wait -- Van Halen (Shuke) -- While I am not a fan of the synthiness of much of the Van Hagar era, I think it works here on the last album of the first Roth era. The big reason is the melody, and the space given to the bass and drums. A kickass guitar solo doesn't hurt either.
Twilight Zone -- Golden Earring (Higgins)
Another One Bites the Dust -- Queen (Ditkaburgers)
Girlfriend Is Better -- Talking Heads (Doug B) -- They kind of bored me after Speaking in Tongues. But most of the SiT tracks are money, including this one.
One Love/People Get Ready -- Bob Marley (Don Quixote)
Fantasy -- Aldo Nova (Zamboni)
Behind the Wall of Sleep -- The Smithereens (Mt. Man)
If You Could Read My Mind -- Gordon Lightfoot (Tim)
Camarillo Brillo -- Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (Binky) -- I love Over-nite Sensation and may have mined something from it if I had wanted to put in the effort to distinguish FZ/MoI from FZ, and figure out which FZ/MoI had foreigners.

shuke:

I'll Wait - Van Halen

Happy to see this picked. It got a lot of scorn from the "ugh, keyboards" crowd, but I think it's the best song from the 1984 album.
Anything to minimize Alex's cymbal mashing.
You sure are picky.
I prefer "discerning".

VH used to be, without a doubt, my #1 favorite band. As I've aged, it really has just sounded "noisier" and Alex is the culprit. I still listen to a lot, but it's some deeper cuts that I now enjoy.

To illustrate how hard it is to keep track of FZ/MoI vs. FZ and who was playing what when, Over-nite Sensation and Apostrophe were recorded at the same time, but the former is credited to FZ/MoI and the latter is credited to FZ.

Known to me favs (that I haven't mentioned yet ...I think)

Voodoo Child - The Jimi Hendrix ExperiencePiponly thing I would do is rank it higher - and therefore OWN it :)
Take A Chance On Me - AbbaAndy Dgreat pop
Uncle Albert - Paul and Lindasimeyreally sticks me from childhood/early teens
Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DCMac 32not really a AC/DC person, but it's undeniable
Don't Stope Me Now - Queensimsargesorry I didn't included them - just didn't find one of their songs that hit me hard
Road To Nowwhere - Talking HeadsKarmaPoliceunderrated
King Of Pain - The PoliceChaos34one of many Police songs that hit my consideration list

worrierking:

Beat On The Brat - Ramones (Tommy Ramone Born in Hungary)
(new song)

This is my favorite Ramones song for two reasons: One, it is so inappropriate/politically incorrect that it is hilarious and two: because it is a song nobody but The Ramones would ever conceive. Ilove how they don't take themselves seriously at all.

Dr. Octopus:

First We Take Manhattan - Leonard Cohen (Canada)
(new song)

I tried really hard to get a Leonard Cohen song on my list. This is my favorite composition of his and I've heard some really solid covers, but I hate LC's version. The techno 80s sound is not my thing at all.

Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DCMac 32not really a AC/DC person, but it's undeniable
I'm actually not either. I count 7 hearts in my entire catalog and I'd only think highly enough about 2 of them to consider them in such a list. While the other one is much higher apparently it was British eligible (Thunderstruck), so Rosie gets the nod. This is probably a better representation of me right now though. Thunderstruck may be the sing-a-long fist-in-the-air epic, but that's better fit in my 2022. The ferociousness of this beginning-to-end: that's my 2023. I'm thinking I need to bring my bluetooth to practice tonight and get this queued up during 400 meter repeats.

PLZ steer clear of the farkakte U2/Bono take on it, which were featured in a tribute comp ... it's as hideous as it sounds

💉

ETA: bonus points if you timed this for Yankees opening day ... met Johnny & Legs McNeil up at the old (new) stadium opening day '91, smack dab in the Stump Merrill/Mel Hall era.

Just about to board a 12 hour flight so I’m hoping to catch up on the past 3-4 playlists for all the unknown to me songs of which there are many.

MAC_32:

Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC (Australia pt 2)
(new song)
I'm a big fan of AC/DC. Unfortunately never saw them during the Bon Scott years. Actually had not heard of them until Back in Black (this is probably fairly common). I actually prefer their older/Scott stuff in general. So many great rockers pre 1980. This is one of them and is absolutely phenomenal live, Still! :headbang:

Bon Scott had one of the more unique voices in rock. Much prefer the early stuff with him.

So, another big AC/DC fan here and even though I grew up listening to the Brian Johnson era AC/DC, I too really prefer the Bon Scott era. Even though I do prefer the Bon Scott era, I have to say, Back in Black is yet another Mutt Lange masterpiece along with Highway to Hell, Pyromaina/Hysteria/High n' Dry from Def Leppard along with 4 from Foreigner. . . I really can't stand The Cars so I'll forgive him for cursing the world with that one. ;)

Alex reminds me of this numbnutz ... tho Alex is not quite that tall, i still have yet to hear of both in the same room together.

Prisencolinensinainciusol - Adriano Celentano - Italian

Some info on this gem that otb is trying to steal from me:

The song is intended to sound to its Italian audience as if it is sung in English spoken with an American accent, however the lyrics are deliberately unintelligible gibberish with the exception of the words "all right". Andrew Khan, writing in The Guardian, describes the sound as reminiscent of Bob Dylan's output from the 1980s. Celentano's intention with the song was not to create a humorous novelty song but to explore communication barriers. The intent was to demonstrate how English sounds to people who do not understand the language proficiently. "Ever since I started singing, I was very influenced by American music and everything Americans did. So at a certain point, because I like American slang—which, for a singer, is much easier to sing than Italian—I thought that I would write a song which would only have as its theme the inability to communicate. And to do this, I had to write a song where the lyrics didn't mean anything."
Watching Ted Lasso from this week. Prominent appearance in it.

Finally made it through the tabulation of number of artists. A few stats*:

219 artists received multiple votes
396 artists received only one vote
For a grand total of 615 artists selected!

Un-freaking-believably, @Val Rannous' s guess for number of artists** was...drumroll...612 artists!

*When I hear the word "stats," I always think of @falguy 's message to me in the first countdown entitled "Stats - you know I love 'em." :)
**Tiebreaker in the SUPER-AWESOME-WORLD-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111. This doesn't mean he won, as I haven't calculated who got which questions correct, but dayum that's impressive.

ditkaburgers:

Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
(new song)

This is @ditkaburgers' favorite Queen song because of the funky bassline. She is her mother's daughter.

Eephus:

Shivers - The Boys Next Door
(new artist)

I didn't get Nick Cave for the longest time. I don't know why because I've loved similar artists but we never really connected until I fell for one of Grinderman's records. So I kind of discovered his music in reverse going backwards through the Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party. The Boys Next Door are about as far back as you can go in his catalog; it was The Birthday Party's first album before the band left Australia for Europe and changed their name.

"Shivers" goes back even further than that. It was a song written by Rowland S. Howard as a 16 year old. He brought it to the group when he joined. Howard's versions of his song have a more cynical tone than the band's recording with Cave's stentorian vocals. I first knew the song from a tremendous cover done by Spoon/Wolf Parade side-project Divine Fits.

I've mentioned in various threads my dear IRL friend Doug, with whom I particularly share affinities for music and movies. A year or so ago, he asked me what I thought of Nick Cave, because he's just never been able to "get" him. I had no good way to explain why I found his music so appealing, and I generally try to avoid trying to "convince" someone they should like an artist anyway. But if you have any suggestions on the best primer I could give him, let me know. :)

rockaction:

Ontario Plates - Do Make Say Think (Canada)
(new artist)

A very jazzy affair with some breakdowns and crescendos, as post-rock does. No vocals. One of my favorite post-rock songs, which says a little bit. A very nice switch up from horns to guitars at about 3:18 in with subsequent jamming. Recommended for jazz and jam band lovers. Payoff at about five minutes, but the payoff alone ain't no good unless you've heard the build-up.

Since AC/DC is a topic and I just posted about the Ramones, I consider them the same band in different rock genres. The music is serious, but they have a sense of humor about themselves. Don't really beat on the brat (not repeatedly, anyway), just laugh about it/look at the 5' 2" guy in schoolboy shorts shredding.
What about the 280 lb woman? Should you sleep with her or not?

I’m decently sure that The Smithereens are the last artist of mine who was unpicked by anyone (including myself). It’s not totally surprising, as there are several artists whom I expect to finish in the Top 10 yet to come on my list. But without getting too specific, let’s just say that at the beginning I was mentally plotting that it would come about later.

Also, I had a real difficult time thinning down possibilities for my main two categories. So I decided not to! At least not as much. That’s right, it’s a 5 entry day for each!

#21s
Recognized by title alone: 19
Sounded familiar: 3
Knew from this countdown: 2
Didn't know: 19

Selected Favorites:
Broken (Just Win Baby)
I’ll Wait (shuke) - let me throw my appreciation on here too, as this was a top consideration for a VH pick
Joyride (Mrs. Rannous)
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (simey)
Road To Nowhere (KarmaPolice)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Twilight Hotel (Hawks64)
A Bar In Amsterdam (titusbramble) - Strong possibility of me doing a deeper dive on them.
Samain Night (otb_lifer)
Soul Kind Of Feeling (John Madden’s Lunchbox)
Psychopomp (Manster) - Ditto what I said for titusbramble’s pick

Dig The Vibe: Jai Ho (DrIanMalcolm)

New-to-me favorites from #21:

(Dawning Of A) New Era -- The Specials (OH). I haven't explored their catalog too deeply but I've loved what I have heard, and this is no exception.
Harvest for the World -- The Power Station (Sullie). On paper this cover shouldn't work, but it does. Andy Taylor could never hope to sound like Ernie Isley, and to his credit, he doesn't try, hammering out rock-ish blasts that don't mess with the groove set by John Taylor and Tony Thompson.
Twilight Hotel -- Quiet Riot (Hawks64). The midtempo pace and liberal use of synths isn't normally what I want in my hard rock, but the melody, chorus and arrangement really do it for me. It's also the best vocal I've heard from Kevin DuBrow. It reminds me of the mid-80s work of a band that will appear on my list later.
Ontario Plates -- Do Make Say Think (Rockaction). Post-rock (aka prog for people who think they hate prog) can produce some thrilling moments, and this song has them in spades.

My top 5 from the 11 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. shuke: I'll Wait - Van Halen
  2. Val Rannous: Radar Love - Golden Earring
  3. Pip’s Invitation: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
  4. higgins: Twilight Zone - Golden Earring
  5. zamboni: Fantasy - Aldo Nova
It is getting tougher to nail down to a top 5. Very tough to cut the Talking Heads songs off this list. Fantasy was in my list, and I could have easily had all of these in it. All great songs.

Just Win Baby:

Broken - Seether (feat. Amy Lee) (South African band members)
(Seether, new song; Amy Lee, new artist)

I have posted about it occasionally, so some of you may know my wife is disabled. Without getting into the long story of it, she has had several major spinal fusion surgeries, and she suffers from severe, chronic pain 24/7/365.

This song is written about a broken relationship. Our relationship is strong, but the song title and some of the lyrics really resonate with me:

I wanted you to know I love the way you laugh
I want to hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph, and I know it serves me well
I want to hold you high and steal your pain...

The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I want to hold you high, and steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I want to hold you high and steal your pain

'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough...

Plus, I really like it musically. 🎵

If youve given up on life and want to know what the next phase is like, put on some Nick Cave
If you feel happiness is overrated, put on some Nick Cave
If you have just had your house repossessed, had a vital organ removed and think things couldnt get any worse, put on some Nick Cave
If you think you know the english language pretty well and want to learn a few new words, put on some Nick Cave

I don't need a reason to listen to Queen, but it's nice to know I've got one.

And I should have played Price is Right better. One higher or lower than Mr R was the way to go. I bid 590. It seemed like a good number at the time.

Only 74-75 depending on how you count some of them :kicksrock:

These aren't "teasers" but instead are "previews."

- Tomorrow the "where in the world" question will be firmly in play as four of our selections go galactic.
- And another three if you believe in the afterlife.
- One of our Ace Award guesses gets another vote! :pickle:
- But two more go down in flames.
- Previously we saw a cover of a song originally by one of the artists selected in this countdown ("All Tomorrow's Parties" by The Velvet Underground), and I queried if the original would be taken as well. Tomorrow we'll have another cover of a song by a popular artist in this countdown, and we can ponder the same.
- One of the following artists from Question 10 of the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-WORLD-CONTEST!!!111 will join George Michael on the "covered" list:

10. It’s Deja VoteVu All Over Again…Again.

Which of the following also-rans in prior countdowns will NOT have a song with a cover version in this countdown: (a) Cream, (b) George Michael, (c) Townes Van Zandt, (d) Warren Zevon, or (e) none of the above (all will be covered)?

Too much hard work to edit the ones using this board software that i want to talk about. Lets try it this way

Todays, almost spoiler free (made you look) rundown. A bit later than usual.

1 - Amy Lee automatically makes anything more interesting the moment her vocals hit. I know she has the “difficult” label applied to her, but i always take that with a grain of salt. If its a guy, people call him ambitious or anyone of a million positive adjectives. Shame Amy and Ben Moody couldnt work together anymore, cause Fallen is a great album. As to Seether, i cant see their name without thinking of the Veruca Salt song

2 - 2 Indian artists on the same day, whoda thunk it? Rahman is a talented artist, that has only come to my attention through the U2 thread and Drian who also had suggestions.

3- I know we have several Cohen fans here, so will be curious how many songs get chosen. This is one of the few. Cohen songs I know, so as a Cohen curious, will watch with attention.

4 - Norway, was the first curiosity with this pick. Next the name. Ok lets watch. All female band. Now im in. Obviously musically trained and gifted. Probably more musical talent in any members little finger than Blackpinks entire collective. Interesting group

5 - 2 from Hungary, India and Phillipines today. What a world! Would have been nice to have a Ramones number, but fortunately I had a Hungary selection at the ready. More soon

6 - Im super impressed and super pissed off that I didnt notice the lead singer of Golden Earring was Indian eligible. This is what happens when i listen to 40 Yello songs and try and find artists from Uzbekistan and Turks and Caicos. Radar Love is one of my fave tracks and beats what i was considering. Dammit.

7 - Another good find with the Austrian connection. I cant even remember if I have Austria. I think i do, but this is better if i do. When i first saw the Smithereens on one of those video clip shows i though, man these guys make Elvis Costello look like Elvis Presley in his prime. Soon as they play though you forgot they look like Accountants.

8 - I first saw Lea Salonga in the 10th anniversary Les Miserables special as Eponine and is responsible for a lot of casting choices for asian females into this role. Shes a multi talented person and the “pride of the phillipines”, actress, singer, but most importantly combining the two in theatre. Her charisma allowed her to return to les miserables, with an associated boost in ticket sales, but to the much tougher role as Fantine. She performed this role on the 25th anniversary soundtrack.

9 - What, no bagpipes? Seriously its a fun song and Paul excels at them. Why so serious?

10 - Love another pick from the Phillipines. My neighbor is filipino. Didnt get the Pixies connection either. I refuse to back off my Lea Salonga selection, but man...the Pixies. Nice song here

11 - The Dynamic Hepnotics are Australian, but like 50%, either they or their parents were born overseas. Fact. Such is the situation here where the lead singer was born in Hungary. Whenever ive cracked this song in another musical draft, its gets lots of love. Not so much this time lol. Maybe a lot of us are waiting to start at peoples #1 choices are work the other way. I know i cant wait to start on the #1 choices. Not so much peoples #31 choices. Love the format though.
12 - Love a clever or fun title. Immediately made me want to hear it. Which is half the battle when we have 40 songs a day to get through. Mission accomplished here. When OMD have two songs, as singles, on the same album, about Joan of Arc, im even more intrigued. Gets in on the Israeli birth. Ok. Lets play this. ****. Was not expecting this. Its beautiful. Needs a producer, but man its so pretty and tender. I was expecting more humor, not such an amazing song.

I exceeded 10000 characters? Never seen that message before. Oh well. Time to edit.
