Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

Temple of Love - 1992 / More - Both songs remind me of a fun bar in Orlando that used to play them a lot.
Was the bar called Visage by any chance?
Yes! Did you ever go there?
Yep. At least once a semester, we would get bored of the Gainesville scene and drive down to Orlando for a Saturday night at Visage. My wife is from Orlando and it was her home-base club when school was out.
It is possible we were there at the same time.

I knew 24 of today's songs, not counting my own but including repeats.
Updated to 24. I remember hearing Wind Him Up on the radio in the '80s. But not since then until now.

I always thought they were singing "once he starts, he can't stop" instead of "wind him up, he can't stop."
He does say that in one of the verses: "once he starts, it's hard to stop".

Wind Him Up (zamboni)
I think On The Loose was picked earlier, but I like Wind Him Up slightly more. Saga had a quick bout of fame on MTV back in the early '80s - I tried delving a bit deeper into their catalog back in the day after hearing these songs. Nice sound and good musiciansthip, but unfortunately they are pretty meh IMO beyond these two songs.
Only due to this exercise did I learn this about Saga, which is pretty wild:

The Chapters

The Chapters is the name given to a series of songs that the band revealed over a 28-year period in a mixed-up order, creating a conceptual puzzle. Each song in the sequence was subtitled "Chapter One", "Chapter Two", etc. In its final form, The Chapters tells a cohesive science fiction story concerning the preservation of Albert Einstein's brain, aliens who are concerned with humanity's self-destruction, and the resurrection of the dead through technology.

The first eight Chapters were issued, out of order, across the band's first four albums, issued between 1978 and 1981. After a long layoff, Chapters 9 through 16 were issued, again out of order, across three album releases between 1999 and 2003. Songs from the cycle have been performed in concert throughout their career. The Chapters were finally released all together in a 2 CD live recording called The Chapters Live in 2005.

Yep, higgins selected "On The Loose" [and "Turn Me Loose". I think in that order. I remember krista mentioning it]. I didn't immediately connect the two being from the same band (heck, the same album) though.

If only 38 Special had a foreigner... Then we could Hold On Loosely.

Sounds like Saga and Neil Peart smoked a lot of bowls together.

worrierking:

Billy Two - The Clean (New Zealand)
(new song)
I am so struggling to keep up. Dang employment! This song is my favorite of the Dunedin Sound from New Zealand that began in the late 70s post-punk and was sort of simultaneous to the American Jangle Pop and Paisley Underground movements. I listed The Chills in my last five out. Several others have had songs by The Clean so far. I discovered them both in the very early days of online music, somewhere between the original Napster and the advent of iTunes.

New-to-me favorites from #15:

Zombie -- Fela Kuti (Don Quixote). This may be even better than his other track that was picked, which I loved. I wish it came with a happier backstory, though.
Bobcaygeon -- The Tragically Hip (Ilov80s). Grade-A songwriting and an emotional vocal.
Hammersmith Guerrilla -- Third World War (OH). Badass blooze-rock that may have been proto-punk.
More -- The Sisters of Mercy (Val Rannous)
Temple of Love (1992 version) -- The Sisters of Mercy (Eephus). Both of these tracks remind me of Joy Division, which is a good thing.

new to me fav

Queen of Hearts - ****ed Upscorchy:lmao: lol - I'm expecting a version of Juice Newton …umm no - but much better!!

Probably like everyone else, I had a helluva time choosing a Jimi song. I know this might sound weird, but I love his vocal as much as his guitar playing, so I wanted a song that showcased both well. "The Wind Cries Mary" was in strong contention for that reason, too. The other that I constantly have in my brain is "Hey Joe," but with only one selection I didn't want that subject matter. (I mention the song because no one else chose it, either.)

Purple Haze is probably the song that first introduced me to Hendrix. Heck it might have been the song that first got me into classic rock period.

Similarly, I had a hell of a time choosing a Weeknd song. That was maybe my toughest artist to narrow down to 1 song. In the end, the bass on The Hills hits too hard. And I like the Amharic outro. Absolute banger.

for the more toofy among us.

Pip’s Invitation:

Runnin' With The Devil - Van Halen (US/Netherlands)
(new song)

Everything that made the first Roth incarnation of Van Halen special was already present on the first track of their first album. The thundering bass and drums, the powerful main guitar riff, the spectacular Eddie solo and the mighty yawping of Diamond Dave convey a band that was on its way to reshaping hard rock and metal. I never get tired of this tune.

worrierking:

It Falls Apart - The Odds (Canada)
(new artist)

The Odds were a witty power pop/rock band from Canada. I first saw them when they were the opening act and backing band for Warren Zevon in the early 90s. They had some success North of the border but little here in the US. Excellent band, fun lyrics.
The Odds and Split Enz would be good bookend picks.

I just talked to my mom, and she said she was at Costco, and a woman was pushing her buggy with her kid riding in it, and the kid saw my mom's face and said to her mom, "Mom I like the way that lady paints her face." 😀 Mom said the girls mother was mortified, and mom said she laughed and told the woman that kids are brutally honest, and that she fell walking. My oldest nephew used to blurt out stuff like that when he was little.

My oldest nephew used to blurt out stuff like that when he was little.
When I was about 5 years old, my dad's uncle died. I liked his aunt and she liked me so in my best attempt to console her, I said from the heart, "Don't be sad, Barb. At least it wasn't you."

She let out a big laugh and gave me a big hug...thus saving me from the wrath of my dad sitting next to us.

I knew 20 songs today, not counting my own but counting repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #14, not including my pick or Gold Dust Woman, which is known to be on my list:

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (AAABatteries)
Purple Haze -- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Krista4)
Lunatic Fringe -- Red Rider (Doug B)
Rhiannon -- Fleetwood Mac (Zegras11). Double shot of Stevie today!
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) -- John Lennon and Yoko Ono (Don Quixote)
Twilight Zone -- Golden Earring (Zamboni)
November Rain -- Guns 'N Roses (Shuke)
Take Me to the River -- Talking Heads (Just Win Baby)
Letter from an Occupant -- The New Pornographers (Marco). I saw them twice on consecutive nights on the Electric Version tour. I loved the first night in NYC so much that I decided to go to the next night in Philly. This was the song that some of friends I was with at the NYC show were most excited about.
Don't Dream It's Over -- Crowded House (Westerberg)
Let It Ride -- Bachman-Turner Overdrive (Mt. Man)
The Harder They Come -- Jimmy Cliff (Landryshat)

- "Question!" by System of a Down was my favorite selection from them so far. Really compelling.
Glad you enjoyed it. I used to listen to a new album cover-to-cover before I'd begin exploring, but this one was an exception. Ebbing and flowing between goofy and serious was not a new thing for these guys, but the structure of this song entranced me.
Would not have expected this track from SOAD, but boy it rocks when it wants to. When it doesnt its beautifully sung and played. Not quite sure it qualifies as a ballad, but its such an unusually structured song as well.
5 different time signatures constantly whiplashing between quiet wondering melodies and frantic metal - it's a wild track that could very easily be butchered, but like most of their left turns these guys made this one work.

A few known favorites from this round excluding past round songs.

Take Me to the River
Running with the Devil
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)
Letter From an Occupant
Purple Haze
The Harder They Come
Knowing Me, Knowing You
Rhiannon
Suite Judy Blue Eyes
Into My Arms
Reminiscing
Devil Inside

New unknown favorites

Won't Wait Again
Summer Wind - this version swings
Better Than - this sounds familiar
Reservoir
It Falls Apart
Havana
Ghost Rider's in the Sky - This version is cool
Queen of Hearts - high energy
The Modern Age
Cold Hard *****

rockaction:

Reservoir - PUP (Canada)
(new artist)

For those that know PUP, this is the first single they ever released on SideOneDummy. For those that don't, it's speedy pop/punk with lyrics about hanging out and breaking up.

The KEXP version would be the preferred version to listen to. Even the booth is going a bit aflutter with encouragement, which while not rare for KEXP, is very cool. Usually they're deadpan.
