Where to buy a suit (1 Viewer)

Find myself in the situation of needing to buy a new suit. Applying for a few new jobs that would be closer to home, so want to be prepared with a good interview suit. I don't wear suits in my current job, and ever since we had a house fire 2 year ago, I have not replaced the suits that I had. As I have not needed a suit for anything recently, and have not purchased one in many many years, I am virtually clueless on the most economical way to approach this.

Should I just go to a Men's Wearhouse or Nordtrom type place, 3 day Suit Broker, wait for one of those buy one get two free sales I hear about every so often on the radio.

I don't need anything expensive as I doubt it will ever get regular wear, just something that I can get that will look decent when I need it.

From what I know, best option is to get something and have it tailored to fit me, as nothing looks worse than an ill fitting suit.

So, what say you Styleguys, what's my play here? Ideally keeping it under $500 due to the limited amount of times I will be wearing the suit(s).

I have had really good luck with Men's Warehouse. Join their club and they offer substantial savings with email coupons. Like anything else they will try and sell you everything but the kitchen sink with the suit, but they offered substantial savings on shirts, ties, shoes and belts when you buy a suit. Their points program is rather liberal too. As I recall, I was able to get a free pair of $125 jeans for my son for just with the points from the suit and shoes combined with a half off coupon.

If you need few suits, it might be worth waiting till the next "buy 1 get 3 free" event at your local Jos. A Bank.

I think I know what radio commercial you're talking about - I'd do that. They're up in LA Garment District, I think.

Don't go to Mens Wearhouse. Overpriced.

Joseph A. Bank has good deals, but the warehouse place on the radio's what you want.

No apologies needed IMO. It wouldn't be a FBGs thread without this type of conflict. I have a real sense of accomplishment today.

 
There is no one answer. I live in So Cal. I've had great/bad suits from the garment district in LA. My experiences with Macy's early in my career were not great. Don't think those guys really know what they are doing. Guy was fitting me for a jacket based on sleeve length? Really? I personally don't like any Jos A Bank products. I've had some good suits at the higher end at Men's Wearhouse (their higher end - not talking Bernini). Their Joseph Abboud US made suit is in your priceline. They also have some John Varvatos suits that are of better quality. Can also try your luck at one of the outlets, Nordstrom Rack, etc and hope that a suit in your size is a screaming deal.

Get navy blue, charcoal gray, etc. Nice fabric (Super 100's on up) and most of all ensure that it will be a great fit. Very hard if they have to frankenstein the suit with massive alterations. Don't want alterations to cost as much as the suit.

 
I used Mens Wearhouse a few times in the past, always taking advantage of the sales/coupons/rewards etc. I recently stopped by to grab a new suit jacket since a couple of mine got torn. The guy tells me that it would be more expensive than just getting a new suit... so I bite and let him show me one. I don't know what the heck is going on but the cut on the pants make the crouch very tight. I forgot what cut he called it but basically said that that was all that they carried now. I will definetly be searching for a new place. You know... one that sells suits more than to women and small equipped men.

 
If you're looking for an interview suit, splurge a little.

If you're looking for daily wear suits, hard to beat Joseph a banks. Mediocre suit, but the price is good.

No offense, but JA Banks suits are ####.

And they make you buy three of them.

It reminds me of that old Dennis Miller joke, talking about two-for-one deals at K-Mart:

"Hey, two of #### is ####, OK? If they really wanna #### you, they'll give you three of these things."

If you have a Dillard's in your market, you can find something quite nice for $500 or less and get it tailored for FREE.

I would go to a local men's specialty store.

Sure, they're going to have a lot of suits in the four figures.

But if you go in and explain your situation, they might have something toward their lower end, or something on sale/clearance in your price range.

You might luck out and get a $1000+ suit for $500.

Oh, and people definitely can tell the difference.

huh? I have bought a dozen suits and have never gotten free tailoring. That being said, nordstrom rack, outlet for Hugo boss, off sach are all good options. You can find a good suit for 500 ish.

Its find for kicking around a government office every day. I have them, but not for weddings or interviews.... Strictly daily wear at government client site (you cannot look overpaid IMO)

Its find for kicking around a government office every day. I have them, but not for weddings or interviews.... Strictly daily wear at government client site (you cannot look overpaid IMO)

First off, ignore all previous advice in this thread. If you want a stylish suit, that is. Your best bet is to get a Suit Supply blue line suit (they won't go on sale, so buy at $399) or a J.Crew wool Ludlow suit when they are on sale for $400 or less. Then make sure to get tailored to fit you perfectly.

 
I need a place that I can buy a couple of black suit jackets to replace the couple that got torn from my desk at work before I figured out what was happening.

I just bought a pair of pants at the one in Hayward and they hem'd them for free for me :shrug:

oh typically when you buy a suit you have to the the legs, waist on the pants and depending on your style the jacket as well. What you described is not free tailoring of the suit per se.
 
Anyone have experience with suit supply MTM? I went by there yesterday but the off the rack sizing wont fit me as the pants are a bit to tight and they dont sell separates. Anyone tried their MTM program?

Any suggestions for other places to get a more stylish suit?

 
Combatant Gentlemen is suppose to be awesome but I am very reluctant to give it a try. Suppose to be great quality at great prices. But there is something wierd to me about getting a suit without getting fitted with it. I suppose you can go get it fitted afterwards but then I suppose the fitting would cost more than when you buy the suits and then are you getting a good deal? I think I will try them to get a few dress shirts and see how it goes then think about taking the big plunge later.

I happen to like Nordstroms. They have annual Sales in July that's pretty decent. They also have a January sale, if I recall correctly.
