Which City Owns Garage Rock? (1 Viewer)

I say San Antonio, but persuade me otherwise if you can. Detroit might stand a chance.

I'll post links if this thread grows limbs.

Currently or older? If older, I probably go the way of your alternative in Detroit. The MC5, The Stooges, The Amboy Dukes, etc.

And nobody wants to hear this, but if it's older? New York City, baby.

Why San Antonio?

The Swindles - CANNOT do these guys justice on youTube. Words don't adequately describe the singer lying face first in a puddle of beer on the floor while etching another layer on the Tacoland legend.

... don't recognize the 16 yea-old accordion player.

Nobody does. Garage rock is only a genre in retrospect. When it was happening, it was thousands of bands bashing away in dozens of cities.

There wasn't a movement because there wasn't a center. There was never a single unifying factor like Motown or Stax or the Brill Building. Most bands had regional success if any at all. They never made it to major labels or if they did (e.g. Paul Revere and the Raiders), they made it in a diluted state so the sound wasn't dominated by Los Angeles and New York commercial concerns.

This is very true, but very little fun.

Detroit.

For fun. Corvair Baby :P

Paul Revere and the Raiders are the corniest, stupidest, awesomest rock band on the face of the planet. Diluted? Maybe. Brilliant? Yep, and I'll have a double. :banned:

The Great Airplane Strike

Detroit was also the first city that came to mind, but really the sound came from all over the map.

Nuggets may be a good starting point to see if there is any consistent demographic.

And I agree with rockaction on Paul Revere & The Raiders - one of the more underrated, unheralded bands of the '60s.

I've got the Dungeon Master's Guide
I've got a 12-sided die
I've got Kitty Pryde
And Nightcrawler too

Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do

I've got posters on the wall
My favorite rock group Kiss
I've got Ace Frehley
I've got Peter Criss
Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do

In the garage I feel safe
No one cares about my ways
In the garage
Where I belong
No one hears me sing this song
In the garage

I've got an electric guitar
I play my stupid songs
I write these stupid words
And I love every one
Waiting there for me
Yes I do, I do

In the garage I feel safe
No one laughs about my ways
In the garage
Where I belong
No one hears me

No one hears me sing this song

Detroit easily. Some other unmentioned bands: Von Bondies, Dirtbombs, the Up, Unrelated Segments and ? and the Mysterians (Bay City, but close enough).

only wiscnosin had filet of soul brohans so i say we win take that to the boogie bank bromoogalies

Van Morrison ere Them might be my choice for best garage band ever though. It was a real short run, but they put out a handful of all time rock classics.

Such an awesome band. I had this back in the day. It's worth fifty bucks now, I guess. That's a surprise. http://www.amazon.com/Story-Them-Featuring-Van-Morrison/dp/B000003TWA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429149575&sr=8-1&keywords=them%2C+story+of

Also, loved your 96 Tears and Dirtbombs link. Great stuff.

Those Them (sounds silly) albums are very rare. I don't know why they aren't reproduced. It was a great band and Van is a big name artist that still records and sells well.

Saw the Flamin' Groovies last night. They played their Shake Some Action LP front to back among other things. They had 3/4 of the original members (or at least the band circa Shake Some Action) and can still bring it in their mid-60s.

I was just listening to this album the other day. Hope you enjoyed the show.
