Which Pass Rush Is Legit? (1 Viewer)

These defenses were not highly rated preseason. Their sack totals are now:

Detroit (10), Tenn (8), Wash (6), Indy (6), Miami (6).

Detroit is tied for 1st in the league. But I typically think defenses on teams with a good offense are better for dependable sack counts. I like sacks best as it may generate pressure for interceptions.

I haven't seen any of these teams but Indy play. Any opinions out there?

What about secondary (Int) strength going forward?

2009 Stats (Giving some baseline for these teams):

Miami 44 sacks

Wash 40 sacks

Indy 34 sacks

Tenn 32 sacks

Detroit 26 sacks

Seems like Detroit might be a fluke at this point?

Indy has one of the best bookend DEs in the game and opposing teams are usually playing from behind which plays to their strength.

Miami is finding ways to get their LBs involved mostly due to Nolan's system which is very simple for players to understand and one of the major reasons Jason Allen looks like a Pro Bolwer right now.

Tenn is always tough but they faced a couple of bad OL in Pitt and Oak, maybe the 2 worst in the AFC.

Detroit added Suh and VandenBosh in the offseason. That will have a trickle down to their other linemen. Not saying they are going to keep it up at that pace, but they should post better numbers than last season.

Detroit is not afluke, their front 4 are very good. the back 7 however stinks
And since their back 7 is so terrible (maybe the worst in the league) I think teams will attack them primarily through the air, which will give them more sack opportunities. But you also have to factor in that they played Chicago week 1 and they have one of the worst olines in the league. And they played Philly week 2 who passes more than just about any other team in the league. In conclusion, I don't see them keeping up their current pace of sacks, but I do think they will continue to be among the league's sack leaders.

Also, I expect Washington to put up good sack #'s all year long. Orakpo is one of the league's premier pass rushers, and with the switch to the 3-4 they have much better blitz packages than in recent years.

I also like the chance of Wash finding its offensive legs with Shanny and McNabb there, though I still have serious concerns about the running game. But I don't care how they put the points on the board.

I have no trouble at all imagining DET will remain among the league sack leaders. I have a great deal of trouble imagining anything else about their defense will prove to be competent enough that gaudy sack totals make them anything more than a marginal FF defense.

Indy is a completely different D at home and on the road in large part to those DEs being able to get off the ball quicker than the tackles with the noise.

Miami.Cameron Wake is unblockable at times. Add in a DL that can all get after the passer.
This. They have one of the better defenses in the league right now
I was genuinely impressed with the way Miami handled Minnesota at Minnesota. They did give up some yards on the ground, but held the passing game in check. Even with Favre and WRs not playing great, the Minn OL is good and should generate success through the air.

Some added analysis from "Eaglzzz" from "The Real 2-0 Teams" thread:

"I think the Dolphins Defense is looking good. A real bunch of grinders and guys that will do anything to win. I think Dansby could be one of the best offseason signings in the whole league.

I think the Fish are for real and if they beat the Jets this weekend everyone will be getting on board. Look for Sanchez to be under heavy pressure and make some mistakes. As for the offense Brown/Williams have to control the game on the ground behind one of the best Offensive lines in the league. Henne really doesn't have to do much just get the ball to Marshall 5 or 6 times a game and move the chains here and there. He is basically just hiding out behind that line."

Tennessee has one of the best DL coaches in the game and those stats are with some DL inactive/hurting. Schwartz is their former DC and if you missed their offseason, the Lions have some players on that DL. It's not original, but clearly they're both hitching their wagons to their DLs.Re INTs, Titans secondary has 3 of 4 guys that have made the probowl. They're excellent and teams know it. The other CB spot was a train-wreck last year. Their LBs are suspect with inexperience or a step-slow vets plugging holes. Offenses can throw at that one CB or hope their RB can burst past that DL. It's the same thing every week. The Titans have a solid nickel CB that also spells the safeties at times. Their young CBs can hopefully step up. IF IF IF, then I'd put them in a favorable spot for INTs with that DL applying pressure. The Titans D was excellent two years ago and very good in the second half of 2009. It's not a stretch for them to play well.

I'd find it easier to ride Tennessee than Miami. Even with the QB controversy in Tennessee it looks like their offense is less of a question mark. Pretty hard to think Miami's offense is going to force teams to the air this season.
