Which rookie RBs are you targeting? (1 Viewer)

Which rookie RB do you covet, and where are you hoping to nab them? Are you only targeting certain guys as a handcuff to your other RB? Would you take fliers on them even if you don't?

Lloyd, Allen, Davis, Estime and Vidal late, but not reaching for any of them and would be more likely to take them if I have the RB1 on that team. I have some interest in Tracy as well, but I think the Giants backfield will be a mess all year.

Not targeting Brooks or Corum as I think both are going too high.

I currently own Davis and Wright in the same league and likely have to decide to drop one before kickoff. This little quote from Waldman keeps me a little hesitant to push Davis up too high, if I were deciding to lottery ticket any of these guys. But I do own Cook, so I'm still holding for now.

"The Bills have been cautious with the scope of responsibilities it has given rookie skill talent in recent years. Davis was not a refined pass protector in college football and Buffalo is not about to blindly trust him with Josh Allen. This alone limits how much usage he'll earn.

If you're seeking a talented back who could cut into Cook's role in 2025-26, Davis is a nice investment. Don't expect it to happen this year unless you read that Davis has excelled with pass protection assignments. Even if Cook gets hurt, expect the Bills to find a veteran with pass-pro skills to pair with Davis."

Not targeting Brooks
What's the deal with Brooks? They spent a 2nd round pick on him after he tore his knee up, so they must think extremely highly of him. Is it suspected he take over that RB1 spot from Chubba/Sanders pretty easily?
The whole Carolina offense and Front Office are going to take a few years to be worth any fantasy relevance.
While Car OL is decent at Run Blocking, WR Dionte Johnson will be valuable garbage time collection of targets (most non-efficient).
Brooks will need a full off season to be worth adding so 2025 is a good plan for him.

Yeah, he is coming off ACL and will start 2024 PUP missing at least 4 games. Some rumors expect it to be more like 6-8 but there is no real consensus until he can hit the field.
And it will be RBBC with Chubba Hubbard for a while.

For Me:
--> I like Mia RB Wright as Morstert is long in tooth
--> GB Lloyd as AJ Dillon went IR opening RB2 for the Rookie
--> Denver Audric Estime as who know what Payton will do there with RB room + Javonte is on last year of rookie deal

Corum to the moon!
I'm of the opinion Kyren 23 was JAG in an optimal situation. McVay salivates over a back like Corum, and he displaces Kyren relatively quickly when live bullets start flying.

Wright just behind Corum as a target I'm willing to reach a little for. Hold and profit when something goes down with either Mostert or Achane. Wright has enough of both in him, that if circumstances allow McMillan to see enough of him in live game speed, both Mostert and Achane will be moved into supporting roles for this guy.

Otherwise, this was a very pedestrian class, that many are struggling to come to terms with, because all new toys are shiny when they come out of the box, but then then lustre inevitably wears off.

Whole lotta role-players, at best, IMHO.
Maybe Laube.

Could be totally wrong, but if the top handcuff is about identifying weak leads (& it is) & 'backs that can catch (& it is) & teams likely to be in negative game script (& they are) & guys that could factor in the return game (hello), Tyrone Tracy jr. is bada-stRrrrring-a-TON!

I took him in a league with IR slots. Not sure I would have done it in any of my other leagues.

In general, I'm much higher on rookie WRs than on RBs, especially this year. One or two RBs will probably emerge, but I'm not sure it will be the ones we think

Dynasty, grab Lloyd and wait. He could be great eventually.

Redraft, I think Corum is interesting. Kyren Williams went from an intriguing late round guy to someone being treated like an entrenched franchise back. RB7? Yikes. I don't see it. Corum has some weaknesses (suspect second gear and lots of mileage), but might be the better runner. If he doesn't win the job, he may at least cut into the workload.

Similar stuff going on with Buffalo and NYG. James Cook is undersized with limited power. While I don't think Ray Davis is outright more talented, he's at least worth stash consideration. Tyrone Tracy is my top deep sleeper in this RB class. He's quite talented for a late round guy. Nice frame with good balance and quicks. He has fringe starter potential. Given that Singletary is a pure mediocrity, this may turn into a committee at some point. Downside with NYG is that their supporting cast is putrid. If Saquon couldn't thrive there then you'd bet against anyone putting up great numbers.

Corum is good enough to force a timeshare in LA. I like him a lot in that offense. Ray Davis should have a good season in Buffalo, but he'll turn 25 this year. Pretty crazy for a rookie running back. He's built like a brick ****house though. Perfect fit for that team and a perfect compliment for Cook's game. Outside of those two, I'm thoroughly unimpressed.

I don't think I'll be making any great efforts to draft any of them.

They're all terrible redraft targets. Every last one of them, but due to the nature of the position at least 2 will be starters / seeing significant carries by Week 6-8.

The RB lottery is no joke this year.
Blake Corum, Trey Benson, and Jaylen Wright are all fine redraft targets. If you draft Breece you better grab Braelon late.

It’s league dependent of course. I play in relatively deep redraft leagues.

I don’t have any faith in Kyren or James Conner staying healthy all year. Blake Corum is arguably a better talent than Kyren with or without injury.

Trey Benson won’t be a 3 down back if Conner goes down, but could he be a 10-12 touch guy with explosive play upside each week? Yep, sure can.

Would it shock you if one or Both of Mostert and Achane were injured this year? Do you think Mike McD is going to shy away from giving Jaylen Wright touches in that offense? I don’t. In fact most savvy owners that draft Achane, are targeting Wright as insurance late.

It’s all in how you construct your roster.

In leagues that I’m taking these 3-4 rookies, I typically go hero RB, or double hero RB. Then ignore the position until late. That’s when I can load up on these rookie lotto ticket RBs.

For leagues with an IR I feel Brooks is a cheat code. Draft him late, put on IR after the draft pick up another one of these rookies. Free option.

Definitely targeting Warren top of the list late and then I like to grab Bucky Irving, Lloyd or Davis. Not against Corum but never seems to be an option for me as I’m targeting other players where he’s being drafted.

Hope I’m not missing the boat on Benson…love the situation but just haven’t heard anything good. Am I missing something on him?

I liked your post, hate the term cheat code.

I’ve been targeting and landing Vidal in most of my redraft leagues. He’s looked fantastic this preseason, and Gus is 137 years old.

Dobbins has stayed healthy for exactly 11 mins of his career, so that leaves Vidal + the runner they just brought in as a claim (which is a little concerning, but I still think Vidal is the RB3)

Otherwise, meh. If I land a share of White I’ll probably grab Bucky late as a ‘cuff.

Brooks and Wright are the only ones I would put energy into getting. Irving and Davis I would be ok with. Lloyd a day throw.

I went after Corum (and that was before the punt return news earlier this week). Benson and Brooks seem to be guys that you will have to wait on to see the field while Corum appears to have a quicker path to making an impact. It was also significant that I have Williams as one of my RBs. Tried to get Wright after Corum but there seems to be quite a bit of buzz on him now and he was snagged before I get to him later.

Seems like they are:

  • Brooks - nope. I mean the talent is there but I am not confident he will ball this year.

  • Benson - Yeah he will get some chances as Connor plays rough and gets hurt but I'm not sure if he is a star in the waiting. But sure late enough.

  • Corum - I think this is the one to have. Kyren had "a year" in 2023. Chances he is really that good with that many touches again are hard to see. I think Corum eats into his touches if he is healthy and if not he is a league winner.

  • Wright - needs injury to either Achane or Mostert to be relevant. But if so becomes a valid RB2.

  • Lloyd -
  • Davis
  • Allen
  • Irving

I like Tracy too. Was a wr turned rb. He has elite skills in small space metrics. He is an electric player. I'm not sure but I think I heard he had high cognitive skills. A smart guy. I think he's the lead back by mid-season and never turns back. The Giants also added pieces to at least make thier OL better than last year.
