Which teams would Matt Schaub start for? (1 Viewer)

In before someone says he should be starting for Atlanta.

I'm not sure why everyone loves Schaub so much. I'm not saying he's not good; I just don't know what everyone is basing their high opinion of Schaub on.

It mentions that Schaub would start for at least half a dozen teams. That got me thinking, so list the teams you think Matt Schaub would start for, if he were traded.

Here's mine-

Buffalo

NY Jets

Tenn.

Minnesota

Then I think Tamp Bay, Chicago, Cleveland, Oakland and SF would all be possibilities as well.

Half of these teams already have a 'QB of the Future' on the roster..

Vick's poor passing. Schaub being a better passer than Vick=most QBs in the NFL, don't need to compare starters. IMO that's an exaggeration.

Hey Guys, good discussion.

I would be very careful of reading too much into what Bob Mathews writes. His columns are mostly opinionated, and he doesn't do well with his NFL speculation at all. I read his columns regularly, and he is a good writer, but mainly for entertainment purposes. Good writer, fun to read, not very accurate. Some of the stuff he does concerning the Bills is a bit better, but overall, he won't help you at all with your fantasy season.

Just a heads up.

FWIW, I think the only teams Schaub "Might" start for are...

Buf

Cle

RW

Actually that's the only team I think he'd start for.

 
As a Buffalo fan :cry: I would not be happy if Schaub were acquired and given the starting job. The Bills were sitting in the draft with the option of taking Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler, but chose not to. That leads me to believe that they already think they have their QB of the future.

QBs tend to struggle in their first year as the starter, just look at Eli Manning in 2004. I want to at least see what Losman can do. If he enters the season having won the QB battle, he should have the respect of the players. He was handed the job last year and it caused controversy.

Schaub has had very little game experience. I think that the general feeling surrounding his effectiveness has a lot to do with one game against the Patriots. In his first year he completed 33/70 (47.1%) for 330 yards (4.71 YPA) with 1 TD and 4 INTs. That's fairly typical for a first year starter. Last year he improved to 33/64 (51.6%) for 495 yards (7.73 YPA) with 4 TDs and 0 INTs. A dramatic improvement. But most of his success can be attributed to the Patriots game in which he went 18/34 for 298 yards and 3 TDs.

Only the 49ers allowed more passing yards per game than the Patriots, and only three teams allowed more passing TDs. Before I start thinking of Schaub as a quality starter and better than some in the league, I want to see a bigger range of games against better defenses.

Ive been a Schaub backer for a while. He's big and sturdy, accurate, and smart. He progressed very quickly learning the WCO, enough to become a backup earlier than expected, and the whole offense seemed to come alive when he was in last year. Hes not the most athletic or strongest-armed QB, but I think he has teh right stuff to internalize and run a complex offense and get the ball in the hands of his playmakers.

I agree completely with this, and saw the same things when I looked up his stat-lines.However, Buffalo doesn't have a QB (unless you count Holcomb).

Losman's numbers reak of Joey Harrington similarities, and his demeanor with the media reminds me of Ryan Leaf.

I also wouldn't trust the passing of Leinart and Cutler for DONTE WHITNER as proof that Buffalo believes in Losman.

Back on track though,

You know what's funniest about this Schaub/Vick debate is that Vick has a higher completion percentage. :unsure:

 
It's ridiculous how some people give up on players so fast. Losman has 1 year of experience with a horribly coached team that kept switching him in and out. Where are you supposed to gain confidence and poise with that kind of situation? I certainly hope if he does win the starting job he's given at least 5 or so games before they consider someone else.

Back to Schaub, I wouldn't care for him on the Bills. I have absolutely no idea why people are so high on him either. He sucked his first year, much like Eli and JP. Now we've seen that he and Eli improved dramatically in their next year. Why not think the same can happen with Losman?

I really don't think Schaub "deserves" to start for any team right now. He's got a lot more to prove.

 
I've never figured out the reason for all the man love over Schaub. He is the proud owner of a career 49.3% completion percentage. Granted, he hasn't played much, and I'm not sure how we can determine his studliness when he hasn't played.

He's had one good game--the game the Falcons LOST to the Patriots--when he had 298/3. It should be noted that was also a stretch where the Patriots secondary had just been ravaged with injuries.

I'm not a Vick fan, but the fact of the matter is that the Falcons have fared pretty well with him starting at QB.

8-7 in 2005

11-3 in 2004

3-1 in 2003

8-6-1 in 2002

30-17-1 = .635

We may never know how Schaub would do as a starting QB in ATL.

 
I have no idea who he would start for but who I think would give him a shot off the WW or as a FA could be Detroit, Minnesota (taking over from Johnson), GB if Rodgers is trash (we don't know and Favre has to retire first). Philly should maybe bring him in as a back up but they probably wouldn't reach an agreement.

 
Teams that would be interested in Schaub:

1. KC - yes they drafted Croyle and have Printers, but my guess is that they would make a play next year for Schaub - and that means this year. Would he start this year- NO.

2. BUF - I do not think he's a good fit, but they would be interested. He possibly could start over the other teams.

3. NYJ - He might start this year, but I doubt they would be interested given their interest in Clemmens

4. CHI - No need with Grossman and Griese,and I don't think he has the arm strength to make it in ChiTown winds.

5. GB - They might be interested especially if they see Rogers is not the future. But same problem with wind as ChiTown

6. Minn. - They would be interested even given the draft of Jackson. Play half their games indoors. He could possibly beat out Johnson.

7. Det. - If McCown or Orlovsky are not the future, they cold be interested. He possibly could beat out Kitna, but I wouldn't think at first given his experience.

8. SF - ne might be able to start, but with Smith no interest

9. NO - With Brees no interest, but if Brees is let go next year, I could see the Saints making a play.

10. TAM - I don't think he's beat out Simms this year, but he could, I guess. If Simms is not the future, and Gradkowski not ready, I could se Gruden making a play next year.

11. DAL- not this year, but Bledsoe is not getting any younger. I just think Parcells would want a bigger arm, not a west coast type arm.

12. Phi - Could not beat out McNabb unless he has not recovered. But if he didn't Schaub fits this system well.

13. Was - With Brunell and the draft of Campbell highly unlikely, but you never know with Wash. I could see him in this syetem as well.

I don't think that kind of thing matters. I read the statement as teams where he is "better" (whatever that means) than the current starter, not that the team would necessarily make the move to get him. It also is based on the inflated perception of him from games like that patriot game, and ignoring things like the fact that they've never won a game in which he completed more than 5 passes.With that in mind, he'd probably cite the following

NFC West:

SF

NFC South:

None (if brees's arm has been reattached properly)

NFC North:

Detroit

Possibly Chicago depending on what you think of the talent Grossman/Griese vs. the legend of Schaub

NFC East

none

AFC west:

none (unless your dislike for Vick carries on to his extended family members)

AFC South:

Tenn.

AFC North:

CLE

AFC East

BUF

Jets (assuming pennington's arm hasn't been reattached properly)

I'm guessing 6 of those seven are his "half dozen".

Ah, the great Matt Schaub. He of a sub-50% completion rate, pedestrian 6.16 yards per attempt, and only one more touchdown than interceptions.

The guy has some potential, but he's not all that great. The only teams he'd start for are the ones, (a) starting a rookie quarterback, or, (b) with a horrible veteran quarterback already in place. Teams like San Francisco, maybe Chicago, Cleveland.

 
Everyone raves about his performance against the Patriots. What these people do not realize, Schaub's numbers were worse than such "stud" QBs as Aaron Brooks (343 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Gus Frerotte (360 yards, 2 touchdowns) against the same pass defense. Or should I say lack thereof, as every QB had career games versus that defense. :rolleyes:

Out of curiousity, how did that whole "Billy Volek 1.0 could be starting for lots of teams based on a sample size of a handful of games" arguement work out?

Backup QBs are backup QBs for a reason. If he really was so much better than all these starting QBs, Atlanta would be trading him, because what's the point of keeping 2 starter-caliber QBs when you can get so much in return for one of them? See New England, circa 2002.

Atlanta needs Schaub because Vick's style makes him more prone to injury. The Jets, Dolphins, and VIkings among other teams pursued him, and the rumor was that the Vikes were willing to give a second (the same price C-pep fetched). All of the talk may just be hot air, but if its true, then the NFL front offices involved have seen something in Schaub that makes them think he could be starting quality.

I don't disagree that Schaub is overrated on this board, but IMHO Atlanta won't trade him because they need him. Teams supposedly inquired but they wanted 15 or higher in the 1st round. If he plays like he did last year, look for ATL to give him the highest tender and trade him for a 1st. Why? Because at that point the 1st rounder is better then a player with one year left on his contract in a backup role.

Very true, and his Bobby the American gambling articles, while amusing, are always about 50% against the spread.

That's because if he was a Denver RB, he'd be guaranteed to produce at ridiculous levels, and all fantasy footballers are very interested in players guaranteed to produce at ridiculous levels. :boxing:
