Who do you start a team with? (1 Viewer)

Ok, so if you were an expansion team today and you could select any single offensive and defensive player from any era who would you choose? Let's assume you can safely assume that the players you choose would have the same type of success they had in their career as they did before.

One offense and one defense.

I don't want to taint this so I'll post my picks later.

Offense: Anthony Munoz

Defense: Reggie White

I was always taught winning teams were built in the trenches. Good answers so far. Taylor's getting a lot of love.

Offense: Joe Montana

Defense: Reggie White

QB is the most critical position on the field, so why not choose the most cool, calm, and collected guy of all time. The rest of the offense will be easy to fill around this guy.

Reggie White is the most dominant DE I've ever seen, playing both the run and pass with excellence. An unblockable force out of the 5-technique position, this guy will need to be accounted for at all times.

Good call.

I agree. Rice is probably the greatest player of all time. Not just the greatest WR of all time. And on D give me the original LT all day long. Not just for the sacks and tackles but for sending hookers to opposing players rooms to keep them up all night the night before a big game!?!?!

I was thinking Johnathan Ogden before I saw the Munoz posts...was Munoz clearly the best ever? I am honestly asking as I never really had a chance to seem him play.

On D, I was thinking Singletary, as MLB is such a vital cog in any Defense and he was one of the best.

M VICK

AND

PACK MAN

YEAH RIGHT THOSE ARE TO LOOSERS.....

FARVE

AND

WHITE

THEY BOTH PROVED THEY COULD WIN A SB TOGETHER ...

Now we're to the point in the thread where we try to name two players that haven't been mentioned yet.

Defense: Lee Roy Selmon

Offense: Brett Favre

Both are guys that can make an impact on the field and you can be proud to have your kid wear their jersey. If I'm starting a team, character would count. My team isn't gong to be the Bengals or Raiders. Those two players would attract free agents who are also character guys.

I don't quite get all of the Lawrence Taylor love. Sure, he was a stud, but do you think he could survive/thrive the same way in today's NFL, with all of the emphasis on character and the drug testing to help ensure it? Ummm....no.

Love the Reggie White pick. I'd pair that with a top notch Qb like Manning, Montana, or Brady.

L. Taylor on defense

Jerry Rice on offense

Those two are heads and tails above the rest of the players at their respective positions.

For example, some may say Joe Montana. So, if you get first pick and take Montana, I counter with Tom Brady.

I am not even sure if Montana is better than Brady, if he is.....it's by a slim margin.

However, if I take L. Taylor, who do you counter with at that linebacker position? Anyone close to LT?

If I take Jerry Rice, who do you counter with at WR?

Randy Moss? Are you joking me? If we start listing his playoff stats for the games he was in, you'd see just how much of a gap there is between these two.

That's my argument for selecting Lt and J. Rice. It's sort of using VBD in this analysis, showing you how much better one player is at one position, making that player more valuable because there's just so many other good players at QB and RB where you could interchange some great ones and really not lose much if any.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you weren't old enough to really watch and evaluate football games when he was playing in his prime. He was the only guy I've ever seen who could single handedly dominate on defense. He'd line up all over the place, QB's were terrfied of him. We'll never see another LT and as a Dallas fan, I'm fine with that.

Same here. Although I can't blame the other folks who are taking Munoz and White.

I honestly think that the pick on offense has to be a QB. Jerry Rice, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, LT2 have been fantastic players. However, getting a franchise QB is the toughest thing to do in the NFL. Just ask the Chicago Bears. They have been looking for one for about 50 years. The Lions aren't far behind. Add to that the fact that a HOF QB can force a team into playing a defense with 7 in the box, its much easier to find a RB to exploit those holes. Also how good would Jerry Rice have been with Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton and Brian Griese as his QBs? Good? Yes. HOFer? Questionable.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the top 10 QBs as your pick.

Favre

Elway

Montana

Unitas

Brady

Manning

Marino

Starr

Young

Bradshaw

To me there have been two players that I have watched that could completely dominate on defense.

Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor.

Obviously there have been fantastic CBs and safeties, but an offense can play away from their talents. They can't do the same with a rush LB or a DE.

You would fall off of that limb. I watched him and Cunningham chasing each other around for a few years. I was watching live when he ended a certain Redskin QB's career. I saw him play in person more then once.I'm not arguing with that fact that he was the most dominant LB of his era, and arguably the most dominant ever, but that wasn't the real question here. If it's a player I have to build a franchise around, IN THIS DAY AND AGE, I need somebody with a heck of a lot more character then LT. As good as he was, I strongly suspect he would be on Goodall's bad side inside of a year, and could he pass the drug tests (I'd bet half my wordly possessions he COULDN'T). He may have been dominant once, but he would NOT EVER HAVE THE CHANCE to dominate today, because he'd be suspended too much.

in 11 seasons, Don Hutson led the NFL in receptions 8x and in receiving yards 7x. Based on the original premise,
Let's assume you can safely assume that the players you choose would have the same type of success they had in their career as they did before.
Hutson > Rice. There has never been a player more consistently dominant at a single position than Jim Brown. He is head and shoulders above any other RB it's scary. He failed to lead the league in rushing only once in his entire career. He is the only player in NFL history to average >100 yards per game for his entire career, and he has a considerable lead over Barry Sanders.Jim brown had more success at his position than any other player in the NFL ever.
