Who else was born in a ghetto? (1 Viewer)

from the rough streets of Sausalito, CA. houses are nice... streets are pretty rough. especially if you're barefoot. and you rub them along the street instead of just walking normally.

my dad was from Brownsville, Brooklyn. poor and rough. different color skin on the folk then to now, still poor and rough.

The good section of Newark,NJ....so not sure how to respond?
Is this near the healthy McDonald's, reasonably priced Disney Store, and the lost city of Atlantis?
ouch...I would always have to say...the section I am from is the section that is never on the news.
I'm kidding. My dad actually works in that area now. I grew up in Allentown, so not too much better.

Legit question...was born in a crappy part of Urbana Illinois (2 houses from a frequently robbed gas station) when my parents were in school..but they ended up having 2 PhDs and an MD between them.

Moved when I was 5. Do I count?

Grew up in a village of 200 (how small? it had three corners.) surrounded by woodlots and potato fields. But the Miller boys were a load to deal with, so there's that.

Not really, I mean you can't be a rapper or anything

I was raised on the mean streets of Sea Cliff, NY. The rough and tumble North Shore (aka "Gold Coast") of Long Island. Tough upbringing.

Wifey on the other hand, was from South Side of Chicago. Mixed, but strong African American family heritage. She was name called on her way to school as "Casper" because she was too white (she's af am, nat am but damned dark cherokee and stuff, irish, swedish and a quarter rican).

ETA: I'm sorry. "NEVER called 'casper' - only lite brite damn near brite"

Technically there is no such thing as "South Detroit." There is south of Detroit, which we call "down river" but that's not Detroit. Downtown is really "south Detroit" but those of us from the city are West-side, East-side, and Southwest people.

Was trying to explain the flaw in the Journey song to you there. Way to not keep up.

I lived north of Grand River on Hubbell when I was young. We moved out when I was 10. What "side" would that be considered?

West side, right by Cooley HS where my Dad went.

Not the only flaw in that song.

I went to Burns Elementary. That was 40 years ago, but it was pretty bad back then. I assume it's still pretty bad over there?

Burns still open actually

I grew up south of there but my grandparents house wasn't all that far from there. Some decent pockets but it's all bad unfortunately outside the core city, but some improvements have come. Take a google maps tour to see for yourself.
