87 Mike Furrey, WR

Height: 6-0

Weight: 205

Birthdate: 05/12/1977

Birthplace: Galion, OH, USA

Team: Detroit Lions

Position: Wide Receiver

Years Pro: 4

College: Northern Iowa

So, tell me about the guy.

He's 29 and in his 4th year. He's the same color I am and that's usually not very good at WR. Purple guys never make good WR's.

Sorry if you think this is a Honda but the other threads I searched out were for One Week only sleeper threads. I already knew they were there anyways.

typical white receiver...lacking "raw athletic ability" but he's "smart" and "runs crisp routes"

been mostly a special teams player and was even a defensive back for a while.

he knows martz' system, doesn't make any glaring errors, and probably practices hard. that's why he's in there.

gotta imagine they want someone, anyone with more potential to claim the job (whether it's williams, bodiford...someone).

Who is Shaun Bodiford? Is this Jeopardy?Same questions apply.

wasn't trying to be one at all, sorry if you got that drift bud. I honestly am trying to find any nugget of info possible that would inform me on any of these descriptionless no name WR's. My :sarcasm: was directed at all of these guys, not you in any way. Kiss and make up?

Furry is a heady player..more of a cerebral WR.

i know it wasn't at me personally, it just got old.

Furrey has made some tough catches in traffic. He is very much a possession guy. I don't see him being a big threat around the redzone either. He is not Kevin Curtis, Az-Zakim or a speedy Martz slot WR. He is just a guy who makes tough catches over the middle...something Roy, BMW, Bradford and Drummond aren't willing/able to do.

It's unbelievable that this team spent three straight top 10 picks on WRs and have to trot out guys like Corey Bradford and Mike ####### Furrey.

They cut Bradford, though. So now they're trotting out guys like Furrey and (undrafted rookie who didn't even start in college) Shaun Bodiford.

What happened to Vines, is he coming back any time soon?
Who is Scottie Vines? Is this Jeopardy?Same questions apply.
Vines is almost the same player as Furrey. Not real big or athletic, just knows how to play his position, plays hard and is willing to take hits.I expect him to stay behind Furrey and Hakim on the depth chart though just because those are Martz's guys.

of course Willie Parker and I believe Gado didn't either. Terrell Davis too I believe. BUT, you are right. What school did Bodiford go to? And did he really not start?

Another cliche about white WRs, no?
yeah - what does that MEAN?I understand the concept of someone "knowing the game" well and being able to adjust routes to help out the QB - but that is certainly not a "cerbral" receiver - it's a receiver who studies and understands the game (ala Jerry Rice, Chad Johnson, Ricky Proehl, Bobby Engram, Torry Holt, Hines Ward, Boldin/Fitz, etc., etc.)

Vines is out for the year, I think. Furrey could be the new Bobby Engram - receptions, moves the chains, not a lot of flash, valuabel in a PPR and cheap.

Have you ever seen the movie Rudy? That is Furrey. Works hard, does what he is told. The Lions are slowly conforming to the exact opposite strategy they used to have:

Roy Williams - 1st round

Mike Williams - 1st round

Mike Furrey - undrafted

Scottie Vines - undrafted

Shaun Bodiford - undrafted

Eddie Drummond - undrafted

Az-Zahir Hakim - 4th round

Vines is on the PUP until week 6 or so... Anyone's guess as to what happens from there.Furrey has been making great catches and the Engram comparison is pretty good. He seems to get open a lot and if not for a couple of passes behind him last week, his stats would have been better.

I think by "cerbral" he meant "Not real big or athletic" or "White"
