Pippen seems like the easy choice here. If he hasn't played 25 + years ago then he probably goes 5ish spots earlier.

Wade was the best player on a title winner and that’s a kind of upside Pippen never brought to the table.

Pippen has won double the number of titles, and is a better defender, rebounder and passer. Wade was the best player on his team like 6 times during his prime and delivered one title. Pippen was the best player 1 time during his prime and didn't. Doesn't seem to tip the scales back to Wade.

Missing a “t” in Bob Pettit there. Best player on a NBA championship team (50 points in the decisive game, including 18 of his team’s last 21 points), 2x MVP, 10x first team All NBA. Probably would have had more accolades but retired at 32, because being a banker paid more back then.

Wade was also a great defender, made more all nba teams, almost double the number of all star games (I don’t give much weight to this but there’s a big difference there), and was a *much* better scorer. It’s not a no-brainer, but the guys who can lead the league in scoring and be the best player on a championship team is shorter than the list of guys who could have won a bunch of titles with Jordan.

You made me look him up and I changed my vote. He's the last multiple MVP winner we haven't ranked yet.

Pippen gets the nod over Wade because of chips....but it's super close for me.

Starting to consider CP3 around here too.

Pippen isn't even close for me. A great player, but if he wasn't so lucky to play with the GOAT he would barely make top 75, IMO.

I think we gotta go older guys here - Havliceck, Cousy, or more likely Pettit

Agree that this just got more challenging. Went with Stockton but that's mostly out of personal preference.

Also for this Webber story: "We would play him in the playoffs, I'd make rookies wait on the bus and say, watch the baddest man in the world pull-up and they like, 'what do you mean,' they think I'm going to talk about his cars and all this and John Stockton would come to the game, literally in a MINIVAN, pop the kids out and come in there and bust us up"

There’s definitely an argument to be made for Stockton in this range.

Surprised at the lack of Isiah votes. Dude was the glue on some amazing Pistons teams. It's either him or Wade for me.

Thomas' star has sure fallen. Back in his late-80s heyday, it seemed like he had top-5-active-player cred.

OK, finally had time to dig into it and I've decided it would be easier to do a process of elimination:
  • Bottom tier - the PG's that don't belong - Isiah Thomas and Kidd. These two have the worst advanced stats of the group and some holes in their resumes. Isiah's greatness was too short-lived and Kidd was more of a compiler than an all-time great.
  • Next to last tier - the GOAT glue-guys - Pippen and Havlicek. Both are GREAT all-time role players, sidekicks, etc., but neither were ever really the top guy on a great team. We still have some of those left, so these two are left out.
  • Next tier - flash in the pan - Wade & Barry. Sure they both had some longevity, but only really reached the pinnacle in one season each as the lead guy on a championship team. Wade had a couple of other rings behind LeBron and Barry had some ABA success, but neither quite cut it for this spot.
  • Runners up - 2 all-time great PG's that couldn't win it all. Paul & Stockton. Sure Paul still has a chance, but at this point he's at best the 3rd option on his team. Paul's advanced stats are phenomenal and Stockton is the poster child for longevity and sustained greatness, but without a single ring or MVP, neither of these guys live up to the top spot here.
I'm going with Bob Pettit. Even discounting for his early era, he is a notch above the rest here. 2 MVP's and 1 championship (would have won a Finals MVP if there was such a thing in 1958). He had to compete against Russell & Cousy, West & Baylor in the playoffs of his heyday and got the best of them all a couple of times.

Him being below Baylor is actually a joke as well, but I digress...

I will say that, even being in LSU Country ... Bob Pettit has been kind of a forgotten star for a LONG time. He was pretty much forgotten even in the 80s.

In comparison, I kind of wonder if Elgin Baylor keeping a profile as an NBA executive helped with his overall rep as a player. Baylor was a fixture at those 80s lottery telecasts on NBC, and really was the only "name" in the bunch most years.

I think you could make to opposite argument just as easily. Did he get more accolades because of playing with MJ, or did he not get the accolades he deserved because he played the prime of his career in MJ's shadow?

I tend to lean toward the latter, but it's an interesting discussion.
