now tell me who would win in a fight between those brohans take that to the bank bromigo

Bill Russell would be a defensive specialist who averaged 8 per game in 2023. Voting him over Shaq is wild. Smh

Hard to tell what he would have been.

Wasn't like he had no competition. He faced the likes of Wilt, Oscar, Baylor and Pettit and won year after year. He was the best player on his team that won 11 championships and he won 5 MVPs over the likes of those aforementioned guys.

Modern day comp would be a taller Draymond Green but with the mind of a head coach.

@Jayrod @the moops @Capella You guys are selling Russell way short with what you are saying. He is the best defensive player of all time, somebody who would have been a top tier athlete in today's game, an incredibly smart player, and had more competitive drive than players of his era.

I think the better modern comparison is probably a better defensive version Kevin Garnett.

I don't think I was trying to sell him short.

I think if Draymond Green wasn't a fool and worked to rebound like Russell did, he could have been one of the best players in the league for 10 years with some MVP considerations. Russell never could shoot well. He shot 56.1% from the FT line despite it being something he did regularly. Garnett was a good shooter.

Moses Malone with less offense and better defense maybe? But Moses isn't really a "modern" player and he was also a bit better of a shooter (and scored 31.1 ppg in 1982). I don't know really. Russell is an enigma.

I think he also had a 54 game NCAA winning streak. 11 titles in 13 seasons. Coached 2 of them. In finals 12 out of 13 seasons. He is top 5.

I think this may be accurate - unfortunately. For Draymond Green gets no mention in the top 50 players of all time nevermind top 7

I am one of the bigger Green defenders in the NBA thread, but he is a fringe at best top 50 player.

However, if you were making all time teams that you would build with a real roster construction and he wasn't on one of the first two teams I think that would be insane. He is one of the most versatile players we have ever seen.

Green couldn't shoot in an era of shooters and while he has quick feet and great hands, is not a plus athlete otherwise. Russell was arguably the best athlete in the NBA - the dude was an Olympic level high jumper. Russell couldn't shoot (who knows how that would have developed in the modern world) but put him in a modern offense like Anthony Davis (another very good modern comp) and he is catching lobs on the PnR, getting the ball close to the hoop, and running on offense and he likely would have been a modern 20 ppg/14rpg/4apg kind of guy with good efficiency and elite defense both in a rim protection way and likely as a switchable defender similar prime Davis/Green/Garnett.

Draymond Green makes a 2nd team All time NBA team for you? That is completely bonkers my man.

I think he is actually Kevin Garnett. I have KG in my top 15 so that is no knock. Russell is just so hard to rank

So KG, with 11 rings.
Yea the rings are the only reason he is a tier or two or three above KG. And obviously those rings mean a lot, but when there were only 8-10 teams in the league every year he played, they should count 1/2 as much as usual. I think Jordan's 6 rings are more impressive than Russell's 11, for example
