Who is... Tim Hightower? (1 Viewer)

Who would you want as your Goal Line back? A rookie who is putting the ball on the ground? Or a Hall Of Fame Running back who fumbled 10 times in his last 1127 touches?

I know people are fishing for sleepers at this time of year, but its time to move on from Hightower. Hes not who you thought he was.
you know it was a bobbled handoff, right? With things like that, it's never clear who is at fault - the RB, the QB, or the coach for continuing to spin the QB carousel. I'm just sayin - it's not like he fumbled on contact.
Its just Edge owners looking to find a crack in the situation. The writing is on the wall --- Edge's value takes a huge hit and if this Hightower kid has any success in weeks 1-3 he will get a larger and larger role in the offense as the season progresses.
Hightower is by no means writing on the wall at this stage. Edge is their guy this year after that it is open season. No doubt in my mind they draft another back next year.
Why is the rookie getting all the goaline carries then? I'm not saying that Hightower will supplant Edge - just that the writing is there for him to get 10 carries per game as well as all/most the goalline/redzone carries.
When was the last time Edge played signifcant minutes in the pre season? You may be right...but I suspect Edge get's a huge amount of the work...Hightower 10 carries? Not any time soon IMO.
I think 10 carries/game is a little high (4-7 seems a little more reasonable), BUT I believe it is VERY LIKELY that Hightower will be used as a goal-line back. Edge has not been a consistent short-yardage RB (at least not for the last few years), and Whisenhunt said in preseason last year that he wanted to look at his other RBs to spell Edge on the goal-line, and he tried to do so during the regular season. Edge had 11 goal line (inside the 5) carries last year, scoring on 4 (36%). That ranked as the 17th best RB last year. Not very impressive. Neither Shipp or Arrington emerged as a "goal-line" back, so Arizona turned to throwing in the red zone with 27 red zone pass attempts, 3rd behind only NE and NO.

Whisenhunt "seems" to prefer to have a separate option at the goal line. As OC of the Steelers, he did it in 04 and 05, using Jerome Bettis at the goal-line while Duce Staley and FWP were the "regular" RBs. In 06, FWP got 21 goal-line carries, but that year, Whisenhunt didn' t really have any other options (Najeh Davenport was the only other Steeler RB to get any attempts and he sucked).

To believe that Edge is suddenly going to become better at the goal-line AND that his coach who seems to like having a goal-line back is going to change that doesn't make sense to me.

I could see Hightower getting about 85 carries, 350 yards, 6 TDs, with about 125 receiving yards this year.

If he gets 10 carries and a few receptions he will end up being a more valuable FF RB then Edge .Edge has slowed down quite a bit and will get his 1000 yds ( WIch is mediocrity today with 4 - 5 rushing Tds , Hightower if he is the goal line back might finish with 8 - 10 Tds.

I saw the play live and on replay and it was Hightower's fault. No problem on the exchange. Yes I'm an Edge owner but it was pretty clear IMO.

I re-watched it, and it wasn't really a bobbled handoff like I mentioned earlier - Hightower should have gotten it cleanly. The play was a delayed draw, and the Denver DL was in the backfield quick - announcers commented that Hightower may have been thinking about that first move before securing the ball away. And, there was contact that caused the ball to pop out, because the ball was down by his hip at the moment of contact. However, whenever a fumble occurrs that closely to the hand-off, there is some ambiguity to fault. You can't really see where Leinart puts the ball and how securely the handoff was - like I said, at the moment of contact the ball is down by his hip. Hightower should have been able to compensate for a poor placed handoff, or the handoff was where it was supposed to be and Hightower bobbled it. Either way, this was not a fumble at the LOS, or in the open field. I say it's no reason for Hightower owners to panic of Edge owners to rejoice.

Guys here have to come back to earth a little , you dont lose your job on a single fumble. Those things will happen , please this is ridiculous to argue wethter it s a fumble or a bad handoff ridiculous. But i have to agree on one thing , Leinart cant do anything right .

Cardinals coaches have been saying "8 to 10 carries" pretty consistantly. This was from an interview with the Haley, the OC in yesterday's paper:

Who is a non-household name who will make an impact? "I think (Tim) Hightower potentially could make an impact for us in some fashion, whether it's as a third-down back, or getting eight to 10 carries. I think he's shown enough to get us a little bit excited about how he can run with the football. He's smart enough. He just needs to be a little tougher in the blocking game."

So, I didn't see today's game but going on the boxscore, it looks like a bit of good news/bad news. The good news being he got 8 carries, a touchdown, some short yardage work and 3 receptions as the main RB catching passes out of the backfield. I didn't see many gains of more than 2 yards though and his YPC is pretty ugly (in a small sample size). Any impressions from people who watched the game?

I saw the game. He's definitely the short yardage and 3rd down / pass play back.He got the tough yards when they needed it and vultured the TD. Edge played fine, but Hightower has value in TD only leagues and some flex value in PPR leagues as well.Overall though he has much bigger upside if / when Edge breaks down. All in all, good first game.

all of Hightowers touches:

3-8-SF9 (9:13) K.Warner pass short left to T.Hightower to SF 2 for 7 yards (M.Lewis).

1-10-SF44 (12:03) T.Hightower right guard to SF 41 for 3 yards (P.Willis).

2-6-SF41 (7:29) T.Hightower right tackle to SF 41 for no gain (J.Smith).

1-10-ARI20 (1:52) (Shotgun) K.Warner pass incomplete short middle to T.Hightower (R.Green).

2-10-ARI20 (1:47) (Shotgun) K.Warner pass short right to T.Hightower to ARZ 22 for 2 yards (D.Strickland). Caught at ARZ 20.

3-13-ARI17 (1:01) (Shotgun) T.Hightower up the middle to ARZ 18 for 1 yard (J.Smith; P.Haralson).

1-20-SF20 (10:35) K.Warner pass short right to T.Hightower to SF 8 for 12 yards (P.Willis). Caught at SF 17.

2-9-SF10 (5:03) T.Hightower up the middle to SF 5 for 5 yards (A.Franklin).

4-1-SF2 (4:06) T.Hightower up the middle for 2 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

4-1-SF27 (6:11) T.Hightower up the middle to SF 25 for 2 yards (T.Spikes).

1-10-SF14 (3:39) T.Hightower up the middle to SF 12 for 2 yards (M.Roman).

2-8-SF12 (2:57) T.Hightower up the middle to SF 14 for -2 yards (T.Spikes).

blue was all the same drive - inside 2:00, just before end of first Half. hightower appears to be 2 min drill RB. Bold are 4th down carries, both of which he converted. Outsdie of that, not a whole lot of 3rd down rushing.

Edge, for comparison sake, had two third down touches - one rush on 3-10 and one pass for no gain.

Great stuff, looks like they are going to use him almost exactly like the Giants used Jacobs while Tiki was around, except he will catch more passes than Jacobs did.

Cards fan. Watched the game in its entirety.

Don't be fooled by the low YPC, Hightower looked very solid. The low YPC are due to the fact that he was used exactly as advertised: in short yardage and on the goal-line. I was surprised by how much the Cards relied on Hightower. He got the rock in key situations: including 4th and 1 to keep a critical drive alive and 4th and goal where he scored the touchdown. I think the Cards showed a lot of faith in him.

He also had a very nice play on the Cards 2nd drive. It was 3rd and 14 from the SF 15 yard line, so the Cards needed to get to the 1 for a first down. SF blitzed and Warner dumped the ball to Hightower. He sprinted forward with what seemed like little chance to get the first. However he used his quicks and bulled over several defenders to get the first. Unfortunately, this play was negated by Mike Gandy coming in and cheapshotting a guy in the back after the play was over. This was the play that preceded Neil Rackers botched field goal try.

Look for Hightower to continue to be used as he was today. He's going to play a good bit, get 8 to 10 carries and get short yardage and goal-line work. He has the most value in dynasty and TD only leagues right now. I think he has a legit shot as the future starter for the Cards. In the short term expect 20-30 yards a week with about a 50% shot at a score each week.

:goodposting: I was surprised they brought him in on the goal line in his first NFL game. I think now that he will have more value than I thought he would before the season. I still think it will be tough to play him unless Edge goes down because of his limited touches, but if you are in a bind and need a flex player, you could probably do worse.Another interesting note is that JJ Arington was inactive for this game. I never heard why, but I don't think he is hurt.

Not to hijack, but did you also get that sinking "same old Cardinals" feeling right about then?

Another week, another TD. He fumbled again this week as well (as he did in the preseason). I guess it's good news that he still came in at the goalline later in the game (after fumbling on the Miami 2 in the first half). I like Hightower and he seems to be getting lots of chances (11 touches in each of the first two weeks), hopefully he makes the most of his chances.

He runs like Marion Barber ( The same determination ) and is a good receiver , give him 2 years and he is a stud.
I hope you're right. I took him in the 19th round of a startup dynasty league, but his talent isn't as evident as Stewart, CJ, or Forte (at least to me). I think I might've got a steal at that point in the draft. That said, I'm not ready to say he'll be anything more than a backup RB/short-yardage back right now. Like you said, tho, he could develop in time. I'm not saying he can't be a good NFL RB.EDIT: I do agree about the comparison, tho (Marion Barber). That's the first RB I thought of when I saw Hightower play. Remains to be seen if he has that much ability, however.

Has he gotten any looks rushing other than GL?

Thinking of dropping CTaylor for Hightower (I am an Edge owner)

Updated thoughts/views oh Hightower?
He definitely has the burst of young rookie legs and has left his penchant for unnecessary moves in the backfield back at Richmond. He's running hard and even showing some elusiveness and good hands here and there. I think he's a top quality backup/RBBC back, but Arizona seems to love the kid and I wouldn't be surprised if they give him first crack at the job when Edge rides into the sunset. With the D and power running game they're establishing, assuming they can lock down Warner (I think he has another good year or two left in him), Hightower's value should only increase.

That's my view too. He looks a lot more electric with the ball than does Edge -- I'm even wondering whether they begin to expand his role in the short term. I'd sure like to see it, as a Cards fan.

I believe it was mentioned earlier in this thread, but that's the RB that his RB coach, former Giants RB Maurice Carthon, compared him to when he was asked about him back around the NFL Draft. That's a huge comparison and filling a Top 5 RB's shoes is a lofty goal, but when a former NFL player makes that kind of statement you have to listen.

I have Hightower waiting in the wings in both my leagues (dynasty). I'm excited to see him develop. I think he has a lot of potential based on what I've seen so far. He definitely has to cut down on the fumbling, but I'm hoping that by next year I could regularly insert him into my starting lineup.

Is it possible that after the Cowboys game and the bye that we could see Hightower get the majority of the carries? E.James is in the last year of his contract and the kid looks like he is effective in the passing game as well.

i wonder how they are breaking up the Gl Carries, because edge still has 3 tds . Any research to show corallation between the score of the game and who gets the gl carries? i saw a stat posted in this forum that had edge with the 4th most Gl carries in the league. I'd assume that in a close game they would use the vet edge at the gl and work hightower in bigger leads. Edge looks just as good at the GL then Hightower, Hightower looks better in between the 20's ( more break away speed potential) i think there using there Rb's Backwords. Edge looks powerfull and Hightower looks like he should be getting more carries with big play potential. I'm not a homer so i only see what i see switching back and forth on direct tv.

I've had him stashed for most of the year. 5 TD's in 5 weeks is pretty promising. I am curious from someone who has seen more game footage though. Is the 3.1 ypc because of mostly goal line carries or something else?

Most of his carries have been short yardage and he's been effective at getting the 1 or 2 yards needed. His TD run on Sunday was his longest run of the season. He looked real good this week, in my opinion. On the downside, JJ Arrington was active for the first time this week and could take away some looks from both Hightower and James.

JJ Arrington sucks, thats a fact, he probably only received carries when the game was out of hand. He is no threat to either player unless zona starts going up 30 points in the first half of every game.

Thanks NV. I figured that was the answer, but when I saw a 17 yd TD it just made me curious. I would assume that simply means that they are giving him some more looks other than goal line carries.

I won my game this week thanks to this thread. Stashed Hightower in a keeper/dynasty type league. With FWP hurt and Thomas Jones on a bye I plugged Timmy in to my RB2 slot and he helped me win by 3 points. Go Timmaaaaaaayyyy!!!!!

Just acquired Hightower in a trade. He's doing well on a Cards team that's producing. I will chime in and agree with the comparisons to Barber comparisons. I don't think he will put Edge on the bench fulltime, but when EJ is hurt or done, Hightower should be top 20 easily.

Any thoughts on Hightower if Warner retires or Leinart gets the start next year?

Do you think Ariz brings in another back as their #1 pick? Or are they more likely to draft another QB at #1 given Warner's retirement talk?

I've had Hightower stashed all season (12 team redraft) in the hopes he'd get serious touches. Unfortunately, Edge looks like he still has gas left in the tank. Hightower is obviously a deep depth option primarily in redraft leagues. He will be an interesting prospect in '09...

Before the season started I was confident they would take beanie wells with their first pick now I'm not sure well comes out early and with hightower looking this good I would be surprised if they took a rb in the first. BTW I doubt they take a qb...it just too soon for them to draft another qb in the first round

I *believe* he is signed through next year. The Cards will be taking neither a QB or RB in the first round next year.
Edge signed a 4-year deal in 2006 for $30.5M with a $7M signing bonus.

2008: $5M (6.75 vs. cap)

2009: $5M (6.75 vs. cap)

2010: Free agent

How many of you guys are actually starting Timmy?

i have been watching get me points from the bench, really thinking about finally starting him at the flex for Sunday

I started him last week and he helped me squeak out a win by 3 points. But I think I have to sit him this week for Thomas Jones vs Cincy. The Bengals have just given up way too many yards on the ground this year. Can't see Timmy getting another 2 TD performance this week.

I gave Edge/Garrard to get Marshawn/Hasselbeck.Without Edge, I am starting Hightower this weekend over Deangelo.

Hightower looks like one of those RB's who gets better with more carries. I was very impressed with him today, particularly since SL seemed to be playing some pretty solid run D.

RIP Edgerrin James...it's Timmy's team now.

I'm going to be able to grab either Hightower or Rice off the waiver wire in our 5-player keeper league. I was leaning towards Rice, but think that Hightower represents better upside the rest of this season.

Agreed -- based on situation alone he wins out. Talentwise, who knows at this point, but the Cardinals are just going to score a whole lot more, and Hightower is going to keep getting the ball in the red zone.

And seasons beyond? Both should of been rosters in keeper leagues. Grab both if you can, sure there's someone worse on your current that you can drop.
