I think 10 carries/game is a little high (4-7 seems a little more reasonable), BUT I believe it is VERY LIKELY that Hightower will be used as a goal-line back. Edge has not been a consistent short-yardage RB (at least not for the last few years), and Whisenhunt said in preseason last year that he wanted to look at his other RBs to spell Edge on the goal-line, and he tried to do so during the regular season. Edge had 11 goal line (inside the 5) carries last year, scoring on 4 (36%). That ranked as the 17th best RB last year. Not very impressive. Neither Shipp or Arrington emerged as a "goal-line" back, so Arizona turned to throwing in the red zone with 27 red zone pass attempts, 3rd behind only NE and NO.When was the last time Edge played signifcant minutes in the pre season? You may be right...but I suspect Edge get's a huge amount of the work...Hightower 10 carries? Not any time soon IMO.Why is the rookie getting all the goaline carries then? I'm not saying that Hightower will supplant Edge - just that the writing is there for him to get 10 carries per game as well as all/most the goalline/redzone carries.Hightower is by no means writing on the wall at this stage. Edge is their guy this year after that it is open season. No doubt in my mind they draft another back next year. Its just Edge owners looking to find a crack in the situation. The writing is on the wall --- Edge's value takes a huge hit and if this Hightower kid has any success in weeks 1-3 he will get a larger and larger role in the offense as the season progresses.you know it was a bobbled handoff, right? With things like that, it's never clear who is at fault - the RB, the QB, or the coach for continuing to spin the QB carousel. I'm just sayin - it's not like he fumbled on contact.Who would you want as your Goal Line back? A rookie who is putting the ball on the ground? Or a Hall Of Fame Running back who fumbled 10 times in his last 1127 touches?
I know people are fishing for sleepers at this time of year, but its time to move on from Hightower. Hes not who you thought he was.
Whisenhunt "seems" to prefer to have a separate option at the goal line. As OC of the Steelers, he did it in 04 and 05, using Jerome Bettis at the goal-line while Duce Staley and FWP were the "regular" RBs. In 06, FWP got 21 goal-line carries, but that year, Whisenhunt didn' t really have any other options (Najeh Davenport was the only other Steeler RB to get any attempts and he sucked).
To believe that Edge is suddenly going to become better at the goal-line AND that his coach who seems to like having a goal-line back is going to change that doesn't make sense to me.
I could see Hightower getting about 85 carries, 350 yards, 6 TDs, with about 125 receiving yards this year.
I was surprised they brought him in on the goal line in his first NFL game. I think now that he will have more value than I thought he would before the season. I still think it will be tough to play him unless Edge goes down because of his limited touches, but if you are in a bind and need a flex player, you could probably do worse.Another interesting note is that JJ Arington was inactive for this game. I never heard why, but I don't think he is hurt.
Highway robbery...got him in fourth of my rookie draft (we draft early). STOKED!
