Who were the trendy picks at this time last year? (1 Viewer)

I posted this in the Assistant Coach forum, but I think it might be a better fit here...

So with all the topics about Finley, Spiller, Best, Huggins, etc., I was wondering who the players were that everyone was advocating as steals at this point last season (or even in prior seasons). This is my first year on the site, and I have taken a lot of advice. I have also drafted a lot of these upside players since they were seen as the best available picks during my drafts.

So, who was it? How did they pan out?

Mike Sims-Walker was being pimped during draft times by Couch I believe, and he was pretty on the money. MSW may have been a bit incosistent here and there but for the price of your last pick it was full on gravy.

Knowshonn Moreno and Donald Brown were getting most the rookie RB hype. I remember because I managed to get Chris Wells at 1.03 in one league

whoever said troy williamson is spot-on. i fell for the hype and even started him as my WR3 week one...it cost me my game. :goodposting:

before the draft last year, ray rice and david garrard were getting a lot of hype. Still not sure what everyone loved about Garrard but glad that I followed through on Rice.

I don't know if I'd call it hype, and it was definitely not as much as this year, but I drafted Finley very latemand got a quality starting TE without paying a premium based on the shark pool "hype" last season

I do remember years back it was JJ Arrington and Kevan Barlow. I stopped listening to hype after that.
Ugh, I actually took Barlow 2nd overall in his hyped year. That just brought back ugly memories. Ive learned so much since then.

Finley was being talked about in pre-season last year too, but he didn't produce much early in the regular season so he was somewhat forgotten about until later.

Some people expected Derrick Ward to be a middle-round gem and run away with the starting job in TB. No dice on that one.

James Davis got a lot of pre-season hype.

Glen Coffee

Felix Jones

Chris Henry

Greg Olsen

Rice was the biggest.

Shaub, Leon Washington, Olsen, and Rodgers were also pretty big...

this year I bought into Charles, Nicks, and Best...I pretty much need one of those dudes to explode and I will be golden.

Last year I remember Olsen getting a following...i was quietly one of them.

While on TE, I remember a similar situation a few years ago with Ben Watson...fell for that one too.

Sometimes, you have to be bullish on your evaluations though, and get a Vernon Davis after his stock has slid to a point at which the risk is much more minimal. Olsen, despite the obvious concerns, could fit that mold this year or next. At Wr, Lee Evans could do the same.

Steve Smith, Giants
Nobody was that high on Smith. It was not until his first week where people started to zero in on him, and there were still doubters after 4 weeks into the season.
I do remember the "Which Steve Smith will score the most fantasy points?" thread... Carolina's was way in the lead and pretty much all the NYG'ers voters were shtick. That got really fun when shtick won.

I still need to buy a beer to whoever it was that started the Mike Sims-Walker Bandwagon. That sadly carried my WR corp in the early season.

I recall Olsen as well. Oh, and how could I forget Chaz Shilens.

But maybe the protean Hype Monster was Kevan Barlow. Still remember taking him at the turn that one year. :X

From then on I've tried to limit my hype darlings to less risky picks.

Josh Morgan had quite a bit of a hype train around this time last year. I bought into it big time, think I grabbed him in all 4 of my leagues. Oh well.

donald brown was getting unreal hype last yr. it was considered qed he was >>>>>>>>>beanie bc he was drafted higher. and it was all but certain he would be the primary back over addai. addai hate was oppressive.

the other darling ofc, was knowshon.

funny how this yr, everyone is quick to cite wells as having the better ability and athleticism etc.

also funny how 2 yrs ago mendenhall was guaranteed to take over for parker. then the next yr he was undrafted in many leagues and a late round flier in all the others. nothing really changed over those yrs. parker still sucked. mendenhall didnt have enough carries to prove either or. yet a guy that was a 4th round pick was undrafable the next yr.

in general, lol fantasy football.

+1 to Leon Washington

The story we told ourselves was

Jets run a ton so there's plenty of production to go around

He has crazy talent and the coaches would be crazy not to use him

Jones is old and could break down this year

(Then rookie) Shonn Greene isn't good enough to compete for carries

The hype for Morgan was particularly thick this time last year.I didn't buy into it, but I did buy into the Eddie Royal hype. Overpaid even.

Why are we leaving out the part where Washington breaks his leg early in the season and was out for the year?
