Who's Replacing Steve Smith this Week? (1 Viewer)

I know last week Drew Carter started but I just saw this on KFFL...

Panthers | Colbert expected to start Week 2

Sat, 16 Sep 2006 10:49:34 -0700

Stan Olson, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers WR Keary Colbert is expected to start the team's Week 2 game in place of WR Steve Smith (hamstring). WR Drew Carter is expected to receive a considerable amount of playing time.

Anyone know if this is just conjecture on the reporters part or does anyone have any more info?

Colbert is the better WR. Carter is definitely faster and flashier, but Colbert runs better routes and has better hands. That's important if you want to move the ball through the air. I was surprised at all the Carter hype this preseason, when IMO Colbert is better.

Colbert likely to start

(Rotoworld) Keary Colbert will likely start in Week 2 with Steve Smith out again.

Impact: Drew Carter got the start in place of Smith in Week 1 and finished with five catches for 62 yards. Colbert and Carter would likely rotate, limiting any real fantasy upside either might have.

i would not trust this.especially rotoworld. they have been very unreliable so far this year.

none Stan Olson is the worst of all the panther beat writers, i take his word with a grain a salt, especially his speculation.

from the Charlott Observer:No practice for Smith, status iffy

Panthers' star receiver nursing sore hamstring

STAN OLSON

solson@charlotteobserver.com

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith, nursing a hamstring injury, missed practice again Friday, and coach John Fox said simply, "No change on the injury report; it's exactly the same as it was Wednesday, Thursday and today."

Smith's absence increases the likelihood that he will not play Sunday at Minnesota.

Smith has already missed all four exhibitions and last week's opener against Atlanta.

In his absence, Keyshawn Johnson and Keary Colbert are again expected to start at wide receiver, with Drew Carter also getting considerable playing time.

• Also missing from practice was center Justin Hartwig, who strained a groin muscle in last week's game.

If he can't play, he will likely be replaced by Geoff Hangartner.

• Backup running back Nick Goings (thigh) missed the workout as well.

• Linebacker Dan Morgan (concussion) has already been announced as out for Sunday.

• Linebacker Na'il Diggs (knee), defensive tackle Jordan Carstens (elbow) and linebacker Jason Kyle (shoulder) all practiced and remain probable for the game

Looks like both quotes are spot on from this Charlotte Observer reference.

lets rip this quote...shall we?if you watched the game, you will know that Carter started opposite Johnson last week.

How is that for correctness on Olson's part?

made my point for me.
your initial contention was rotoworld, not Olsen. I have no opinion on this, and have no dog in the fight. And, I do not care. BTW< nice reaction when info differs from yours ... just go on the attack .... cool guy
Just trying to keep people preoperly informed. was not ripping you that I recall.
dude, you ripped roto saying they may not be accurate. cool. they reported this accurately per the observer story. then, you take a couple shots at olsen and myself along the way. ease up and re-read above

you can disagree with them, or me, all you want ... and I am cool with that. But, no need to take potshots at everyone when the story disagrees with you

not taking a pot shot at you. sorry if you feel that way. I just hate to see people not properly informed.

Moose ---> :hifive: <--- wannabee ... ok?

I'll be starting Carter instead of Colbert over Smith. Colbert is brutal.

I think he's just getting the token "starter" label because he's a veteran, but I bet Carter sees most of the snaps of teh two.

FWIW, from KFFL:

Fantasy leaguers in 2005 scratched their collective heads repeatedly while wondering what on Earth happened to wide receiver Keary Colbert in his sophomore year. After an impressive rookie campaign in 2004, Colbert regressed drastically in 2005, and he had effectively lost his No. 3 role to Drew Carter, who is a speed demon. Carter is actually faster than Steve Smith is! We were curious to find out who quarterback Jake Delhomme preferred to work with, as injuries to Carter have not allowed he and Delhomme to gain chemistry over the past couple of years. The response we received was, "Good question! All I can tell you is that Carter is faster and knows how to get open, so he would be the logical choice."
If Carter can get Jake's endorsement, that's good enough for me.

This is totally incorrect. Colbert has horrible hands and can't get separation. Last week he killed a key drive late by stepping out of bounds on 4th down a yard short of the sticks when he could have easily turn the route up and gotten the first. Colbert also tends to accumulate penalties.Carter >>> Colbert. EOS.

I have season tickets for the Panthers and Colbert has looked much better in pre-season compared to last year, but in IMHO Carter is definitely the guy that will benefit the most from S. Smith's absence. Carter has big play potential and a good rapport with Jake. He had about 11 or 12 looks from Jake against the Falcons last week and it doesn't matter who actually starts, the guy you want is Carter, not Colbert.

Just trying to add value for those looking for information on the WR situation here in Carolina. :)

Good stuff...thanks.

Drew Carter led all players on Carolina with 10 targets in week one. Colbert had 5 targets.

The Vikings will play Dwight Smith at FS this week. They benched him for disiplinary reasons in week 1. Smith will be a factor in stoping the Panthers from going deep. We will find out if he is up to task.

including the one rushing attempt, carter had 8 (of the 11) targets in the 4th quarter. dehomme was looking for carter late. in addition, all of carter's targets for the game came on 1st and 2nd down. not one 3rd down target, which is surprising.

#### that...i'm starting Carter :football:
Right on, Joffer. While I appreciate the information posted, I know what I see with my own eyes on Sundays. Carter is much more likely to fill in S. Smith's stat line, and ready to ascend to an excellent WR. I picked him up in about 6 leagues this week.

To answer the original contention that Colbert will start again LIKE LAST WEEK. That is false. Carter started opposite Keyshawn. Just look at the NFL Gamebook.

A lot of people seem to be of this thinking. Can any homers shed some light here - even if he progresses, is there enough room with Smith already as the clear-cut #1?

On wbt Charlotte this morning, Panthers Network from Minneapolis stated that Colbert was the # 2 but that Carter would see a lot of action in the # 3 role.

And what about Carter? He drops balls, and he just dropped a throw right to him today.

Nevermind...go start Colbert and see how that works out for you.
