Why Gates won't be a top 3 TE (1 Viewer)

If Gates were considered a wide receiver, he'd be the fantasy WR1 right now. (If he were considered a running back, he'd be the fantasy RB2 in PPR leagues, behind only Frank Gore. He'd be RB6 in non-PPR leagues.)

It's amazing.

A few weeks ago I couldn't get any staffers in the roundtable to say they'd pick him top five overall. But if a draft were held today, I think there's a case to be made for taking him #1 overall.

Gates is currently #1 in VBD value, and only 14 other players have even half as much VBD value as him. (FBG scoring and baselines.)

I think it is a little unfair to say Gates is above and beyond so much better than anyone right now. Total point wise he is going to be ahead of many people because San Diego has not had their bye week. Lets wait until after week 10 to conclude some things.

Also, I am a Gates owner in one league and he is leading everyone as the #1 point producer this season so far with Rivers at #2. Again, no bye week for either yet.

That's why you look at the average points per game. Roddy White is the only WR/TE ahead of Gates right now in a non-ppr. I doubt he'll finish the year averaging > 14 ppg but damn you can't downplay his ridiculous performance thus far.

I haven't heard an argument for why Gates won't be a top 3 tight end yet. He's been double teamed for the fair amount of the last 6 years and has finished outside the top 3 once, yes 4th in 2008.
You haven't? The argument is that he will be double/triple teamed. Yes, VJax hasn't always been around, he spot played in Gates first big year, but did D coordinators stay up at night thinking about Gates in his first year? No. Did they in VD's first big year? No. Gates has been around long enough now to be the #1 threat by a large margin in the SD passing game, this year more than ever. I knew this opinion would be unpopular, that's why I posted it. Bump it in the end of the year and call me stupid, I want you to.
you're stupid.
