Why I don't want the Saints to trade for Shockey.... (1 Viewer)

Shockey doesn't like how he's used

I don't doubt that this guy wants to go out and do well, but this "all about me" attitude is why I hope he doesn't end up in Saint's uniform this coming year. Your team just finished winning a Super Bowl and you're complaining about how you're being used? What's more important, getting your #'s or getting the championship? Now, I'm not saying whether or not getting him involved in the passing game would make the Giants a better team as it may and it may not, but that's not the point. To me, it seems he'd rather be somewhere where he's being used more and become a bigger focus than being on a successful TEAM that overcomes a lot to win it all. No thank you, Mr. Shockey.

As quoted on rotoworld: "He feels that his career is being cut short by the blocking emphasis installed by head coach Tom Coughlin and believes he was used more effectively under former coach Jim Fassel and offensive coordinator Sean Payton"

I don't like me first players either, but He feels that his career is being cut short by the blocking emphasis is a lot different than saying he doesn't get enough receptions, etc. He had a bad injury last season, I'm sure he wonders about the way he's being asked to block, and whether that is going to cut short his career. This isn't the type of Me-First stuff Owens and Keyshawn play(ed)

As a Colston owner in dynasty I do not want Shockey to be traded to the Saints because I think this would certainly cut into Colstons targets somewhat.

Have to agree with the me 1st attitude of Shockey. The Giants won without his help thus proving they dont need him.

Guess we can start calling him JereME Shockey now.

"While blocking is an integral part of a tight end's job description, Shockey believes he was more effective as a receiver under former coach Jim Fassel and offensive coordinator Sean Payton, now the coach of the New Orleans Saints, who are interested in trading for Shockey."

"Shockey has complained about his role several times since Coughlin arrived. Late in the 2004 season he griped about being turned into "an average player" by the new coach's offense. "

"Shockey once told Shiancoe to stay with the Giants because Shockey wanted to leave, which would have left the starting spot to Shiancoe.

The person, who asked not to be named because the conversation was private, said the emotional Shockey then flipped his stance and told Shiancoe he'd be better off playing for a team that features a receiving tight end in its offense."

Sorry, but that sounds like a lot of "me-first" stuff.

He rarely plays full season but would probably improve with the Saints. I own M. Colston and K.Boss in a dynasty, so i think i would come out slightly ahead as Colston is giong to get his and Boss can be a #2 TE with a full time gig.

A healthy dose of me first is pretty standard in the job description for a pro athlete. Shockey has more than most. Just because he wants to catch more footballs doesn't mean he doesn't want to win a Superbowl. He wants to win a Superbowl just as much as anybody. He's thinking they could be even better if they used him as an offensive weapon more often. Do you disagree? As an Eagle fan I've never liked him much. But he's loud and arrogant out of competitiveness. (is that a word?) And he can back it up on the field. When he's healthy he can be a major distraction for a defense if they are throwing him the football.

I'd have less of a problem with this if the Giants hadn't just won the Super Bowl. If they kept falling short and he felt he could get them over the hump, then fine. We've been hearing that from him for longer than just now (and others) and I'm ok with that. But to keep saying it when you're on the National Champions and that you want out because you think you can be used better instead of staying and defending your title is too big a dose of "me" than I would want.

I agree, but I don't fault the guy for being who he is. Shockey on the Saints makes too much sense. They can use him as the 2nd receiver, Brees loved Gates in San Diego (who wouldn't?) so he knows how to use the TE, and the coach likes to use his TE. Compensation has to be the only issue.

To be honest, I don't fault him either. That's just the way he is and the way he competes and I know he feels he can really contribute. I don't hate the guy. I just rather he go to another team. I know that he could pay huge dividends in the passing game, but I like the type of players that the Saint's currently have and would prefer they go another direction at TE. But, I do agree with you that it does make sense--I just wouldn't like it.

I don't agree with him asking to be traded but I can see where he's coming from. I hate to admit it but I would be pretty happy to see him join the Eagles right now, not that that would ever happen.

players, values, needs, etc. line up, but you're right. Rivals don't tend to swap top players. Otherwise, Lito + a pick for Shockey seems legit.

Couldnt the Giants look at the Saints in a similar, but slightly different way? They would be enriching their competition for the Super Bowl by sending him to NO. The Saints had a bad season, but are a good team. Shockey could give them nightmares in NO.I like him going to Miami better, and thats just my personal speculation.

Shockey should be willing to do whatever it takes to win. Instead of emphasizing blocking over catching passes, he's complaining about his role. Seems pretty obvious that he's being selfish.

Shockey would look good in NO from a fantasy perspective. It wouldnt hurt Brees either. As a Colston owner in a few leagues, I think Id rather see him stay with the Giants

I doubt Parcells is inquiring about Shockey after the "homo" remark.

In all honesty the 2007 season could be replayed 100 times and the Giants might only win the Super Bowl one of those times without using Shockey as a receiver more often. With Shockey as a receiver more often, probably four or five times.

I'm not a big Shockey fan, but I don't have any problem with what he said that article. NFL players have short careers and need to maximize every aspect of their potential. They owe it to themselves and their families. If he doesn't like the way he's being used and wants a change, so be it.

 I still don't see it as me-first, at the expense of the team. It still seems overall Shockey's motivation isn't about fame and glory, but rather health.

I would have to disagree with you on this one Switz. Shockey plays physical in all aspects of the game and in doing so he is always dinged up no matter what his role is as a TE. Part of being a great TE with the strenght and power that Shockey has is being a great blocker. He needs to realize this as Coughlin has. Sure he is a good receiving TE, but to bad his championship team has figured out a way to maximize their system with the TE being a bit more of a blocker. He still will catch 65 plus balls a year as well as contribute 7 plus TD's a year in this system and would be doing so on a championship caliber team. If this is really how he feels then it truly is a ME first attitude and if I were the Giants I would trade him while his value is still quite high as he is one of the best all around TE's in the league.

Not a Shockey fan. However, I was under the impression that these statments were actually made in December - when the Giants were in the playoff hunt.I agree that the statements are a bit self centered, but this is the guy's career. Surely anyone would be concerned if they felt that their career was going to be shortened. And, it's not as if he is saying he won't play hard in the manner asked because it will shorten his career. He still plays all out. It's just his mouuthiness I don't like. However, I don't see him at the forefront actively demanding a trade and saying he will never play for the Giants like other mouthy players are doing.
