Why is it legal to require an employee to be fluent in Spanish? (1 Viewer)

I'm more outraged this is about a language and not something actually dumb, like requiring people to be clean shaven, or to cover their tattoos, or to have 'acceptable' hair styles.

It must be an area where there are a lot of spanish peeps. Knowing a popular second language is beneficial for the biz. Folks may know some english to get around but it's better customer service to have someone that can speak in their language. You are always more comfortable with your native language and if a company has someone who speaks it, chances are more such folks will bring biz to that company.
My counter argument to it all is this, you might appeal to that 2-5%, I've seen some companies require Portuguese as the language. I know we get a lot of tourists and visitors from foreign lands. But at the same time you are going to turn off the English folks, the folks who make up a large portion of our population even in 3rd World cities like Miami.

I get what you all are saying but there is more going on here than just catering to a few customers. It would seem like an easy way to discriminate against potential applicants.

Not many people live in this country and only speak Spanish…
The only folks I see who throw a big gripe are folks who came here in the 60s and never learned English(we have quite a few)
Quite a few, but not many.
Out of 350 Million in this country give or take…very few. Out of 5,000,000 in Miami, maybe a slightly larger population or concentration of those folks. These are not the movers and shakers down here though I can't stress that enough. The Miami mayor speaks English and does so at all press conferences, all this catering to one small segment of the population is silly.

MOP making a strong stance that no matter who wins the Dumb#### title for this year, he's the real champion.

So do you think it should be illegal for an employer to require someone speaks English (or any particular language?) Or just Spanish?

What about jobs that require CDL's? Should that be illegal?

I take it those business classes you at the "THE U" didn't go so well.

Have you ever tried to go all MoP...on Weed?

Excellent point. We have a cousin(lots of them) on my wife's side of the family, he ran out at 18/19 and got a neck tattoo. It's a piece of art no doubt about it but it is impossible for him to cover it up. Now he is 21 years old and he hates it. He doesn't like the fact people judge him before he even opens his mouth…we tried to warn him but trying to reason with a teenager is like trying to reason with a woman 2 days before her monthly event starts.

Adult men got it rough

On what grounds could this possibly be illegal? Why would you not want the employee best able to serve your clientele and generate sales?
I'll tell you why, when my wife and I go somewhere and no one can explain things in English we don't buy and we leave. There still are a few English speaking folks round these parts. And I have employed people within a sales force who do speak Spanish fluently, always keep 20-25% of my staff that have that ability in case someone cannot speak a lick of English but I found over time that rarely did that issue come up. Someone might feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish with an associate but that doesn't mean they won't speak English if no one is around to assist them. They don't automatically walk out the door.
Yeah, they're not as arrogant as you are.
I'm extremely arrogant, I don't view that as a put down and it doesn't have the impact you wish it had, that's how arrogant I am. People have called me that since I was a teenager and I never cared. My father used to lecture me about thinking before I speak. I prefer to shoot from the hip and let people know exactly what's up whether they want to hear it or not.
Good thing you won't be passing this wisdom onto your son.

Or bathe
My wife had to explain to her new assistant in front of the HR person that he needs to bathe before he comes into work…my wife did not hire this person, he was assigned to her and she has been trying to get him transferred out ASAP, he does a bunch of other things that would require an entire thread, just the worst employee I have ever seen BUT BUT BUT he's GAY and therefore untouchable in a non profit environment. You say anything to this stupid frack and he thinks its his homosexuality but no it's the dirty laundry, smelly BO, stabbing my wife in the back any chance he gets when she is out of the office…the list goes on an on.

Greetings my frugal friend, it's a good question. I don't need to require anyone speak English, I can easily interview someone over the phone for 15 seconds and find out if they can communicate or not. So you can hide it better if you require English. If someone were to greet me in Spanish for a job placement ad, I would just politely and respectfully tell them No speaka da Spanish and hang up.

Eh, pendejo!

I'm quite passive on the weed actually. It's when I am not smoking and look closer at my surroundings that I get wigged out.

I'm playing with house money at this point since you cannot defend the crown.
More to the point you are playing with house money, letting it ride, and hitting 21s.
I appreciate it, to be honest Zow/Woz, I have no idea who you truly are, never did understand Woz, thought you were in deep as a bonfide punching bag type to the :e: crowd but now I don't really know. Are you an expert on these types threads?

I am a South Florida native. I never encountered any store except in the heart of Little Havana where no one spoke English. And even in Little Havana I was able to get whatever I wanted.
White Americans also pretend to not be able to speak English when MOP approaches.

We are a nation where Freedom of Speech is protected - and essential.

Contrary to the misguided desires of false patriots who wouldn't know the constitution if they stepped over it to stop someone from burning a flag, we have no official language.

As such, is it ok that a business requires it's employees be able to speak, read or write English?

Same thing.

Welcome to freedom. If you can't (really) handle it, GTFO of this Country because freedom does not seem to be for you.

Pretty much what I expected. Looking at your surroundings is not a bad thing unless you have to avoid looking in the mirror for it to happen.

Highly recommend that you smoke more and contemplate these kind of egregious offenses to your delicate sensibilities less.

But please post them when you do

I sure hope my doctor didn't graduate from medical school. That would be an outrage. I think a nationwide lottery for job reassignment would be fun. I just hope I don't draw airline pilot.

If you can get a collection going in the FFA, about $50k to relocate to another country should do.

I'll get the kickstarter campaign started ASAP.

America doesn't have an official language. Accept it and move on.
How many Americans with a net worth of over $1M, how many of those folks are fluent only in Spanish?

How many transactions on Wall Street each day happen in anything other than English?

Are they speaking English in the House and Senate? Not sure about the White House.

There are 44 million Hispanics in the US with approximately 13 percent of households who speak Spanish at home. This percent will be higher in Florida. Who considers this small?
