Not sure how cumbersome it is but for 99% of people, I would think they'd be more understanding and less app to cross a line again if a mod just deletes a post or posts and mentions "please don't post this type of stuff" it would go a lot further then just deleting the whole thread with no explanation. 

This is just regarding general thread axing not total toolbaggery acts of a bunch of people in a thread.

Several times people are asking and wondering why a thread got axed which inevitably leads to a potential repeat offense or line crossing 

This.  Not having any explanation means that no one ever knows what stuff was offensive or how to avoid it.  Never did find out what was so offensive about songs by musicians who had died.  I'm not supposed to listen to Prince any more?  Or some other thing?  It's extremely frustrating and not very good moderation.
