Why isn't Arian Foster catching passes this year? (1 Viewer)

The targets are down, but he's catching a much lower percentage of passes too-

For the past two years, he caught around 75 percent of his targets, this year he's down below 50 percent.

I was thinking about this too. I've always wondered why more teams don't swing those backs out of the backfield and get them 1 on 1 with a linebacker in the open field. Elite backs like Foster you would think would get more passing plays.

Looks like Minn. with Peterson has done that a lot more this year.

because they are controlling the game so well in the past, they were in games they had to come from behind in or were playing even. they are leading so often now that they dont need to

I think several things are contributing.

Schaub has had time to throw and generally has had someone open further downfield, so there hasn't been a lot of need to check down.

The receivers have been healthy this year. AJ and Daniels collectively missed 9 games in 2010 and 10 games in 2012. And Daniels wasn't fully recovered from his injury last year to take back up his slack even when playing. I think that meant more passes that ended up with check downs.

That also might have changed the play calling some. I just don't see as many screens this year as in the past.

Pinged Lance Zierlein for his thoughts on it as he breaks down Texans tape a lot. He indicated he thought Schaub is more comfortable going through his progressions, that a lot of RB targets often means the QB isn't as comfortable or doesn't trust his protection as much.

It's a result of a number of factors, including Foster's uncharacteristic case of the dropsies. He's not being targeted as much, but when he is the pass is dropped, thrown over his head (partly out of caution by Schaub), or a defender is waiting to help break it up.

However, I think the primary reason his receptions are down is because teams aren't blitzing Schaub as much as they have in the past. Opposing defenses know the Texans have the ability to make them pay if they blitz and that Schaub is not likely to crack under the pressure of blitzing LBs. They know the Texans are all about the ZBS and the way to beat it is to stay home, read the offense, and react. Hence, fewer blitzes and less pressure on the quarterback. Less urgency to get the screen pass out to the RB in the flat to beat the blitz.

To me it seems more than ever that the Texans want to really kill you with their play action passing. They seem to just want give Foster more carries, setting up the defense to believe that when he's in the backfield it's a run play. They have had soooo many wide open play action bombs as a result. It is unfortunate considering how elite Foster has been as a pass catcher coming into the season, but as long as it is working I wouldn't look for any changes to be made.
